Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

One Word: Awesome

Reports from ESPN.com claim that Tony Romo, Waukesha native and Cowboys' quarterback (read: blood traitor) has a broken pinkie on his throwing hand and will be out for about four weeks.  This comes after Dallas (hilariously) lost to Arizona in overtime on a blocked punt.  (Seriously?  Who loses a game on a blocked punt?)  Maybe it's just me, but Tony Romo is more irritating than jock itch and I've hated the Cowboys ever since I was in diapers, so this is great news to me.

A look at Dallas' schedule for the next three weeks: at St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and at New York Giants.  While St. Louis couldn't get pass rush against a tree, Romo's backup is the only quarterback who's actually slower than a tree: Brad Johnson.  And we all remember how Tampa Bay treated Aaron Rodgers, not to mention how the G-Men treat anybody under center, despite the absence of Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyora.

While we've already lost to the 'Boys this season, this is great news in terms of playoff implications.  Dallas could easily lose two of their next three games, which would bring them down to 5-4 and back to the rest of the NFC pack.  Again, this story may not be very important to Packer fans right now, but it may be the beginning of a chain of events affecting Green Bay's playoff seeding in November.

This, of course, assumes that Green Bay makes the playoffs, which they totally will.  Right?

Poll
Will they?
Of course they'll make the playoffs; the Vikings started their annual breakdown early and Chicago still has Kyle Orton.

No, the slow start ruined their chances; Chicago is playing too well and the wild card spots are going to an NFC East or NFC South team.

Who loses a game on a blocked punt in OT?

Nobody. No one has ever lost in OT on a blocked punt for a TD. That is pretty sweet.

The Saints beat the Bucs in OT

a couple of years ago on a punt that should have been blocked, but the punter smartly tried to throw the ball for a first down and it was picked off and run into the end zone.

The great thing about the NFC East is that all these teams will beat up on each other’s records, so while its very likely that they’ll get two wild card teams from that division like they have the past two years, the winner of that division may have to play on wild card weekend, which is what happened in the ‘06-’07 season. This could be one of those years in the NFC were the top seed is only 11-5.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Parity

It looked like things were slipping away from them during the three game losing streak, but all the non-Philly teams in the NFC fell hard this weekend and the NFC South has emerged as one of the toughest divisions in the NFL with three 4-2 teams and 3-3 New Orleans lurking in the background with a big pass offense.

I don’t think the top NFC team will have a lowly 11-5 record. The underdog has emerged and Arizona might be the team most likely to have the best record in the NFC. At 4-2, they’ve got as many wins as any NFC team and it looks like they are the only good team in a wretched NFC West.

Although I shouldn’t count the Packers out for the best record in the NFC. After they host Indianapolis, and then play a real tough game at Tennessee, they have the bye week, then over the last 8 games they play only one team that currently has a winning record (Carolina at Lambeau).

embarassing?

what exactly is embarassing about the post? Is there a problem with schadenfreude?

well,

what’s embarassing about it is your sheer glee in the injury of another. Schadenfreude stems from resentment and insecurity and I don’t understand why you would feel either of those emotions with regard to Romo, who’s never won a damn thing.

But hey, to each his own. I’m curious though, what other professional entertainers do you hope injury upon?

Romo's a dick

I route against guys like him. Get over yourself.

I don't think I need to get over myself

as much as you clowns need to get some perspective. I too “route” against the Cowboys. I despise that organization because it represents everything that sucks about professional sports. But I hope I never reach the level of obsession with sports that I actually write a post entitled “awesome” about an opposing player getting injured. That’s embarrassing. And it’s just one guy’s opinion, so relax.

Clowns?

Were I not wearing the oversized shoes and rubber red nose, I would take offense to that.

And you may have missed my comment at the end of this thread:

I may have come down as a bit extreme on this one. Allow me to clarify: My joy stems from the Cowboys’ loss as a team, not the personal injury of Tony Romo the person. I’d rather have Romo be healthy and just suck than him be injured.

I like to think that my clarification showed a bit of perspective. If you’re still embarassed, I don’t know what to tell you.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a birthday party to get back to.

There is a large difference between hoping for a player to be severely injured and celebrating a team’s loss as a result of that injury. When Tom Brady got hurt I wasn’t thrilled that he got hurt, but I was thrilled for the loss that the Patriots suffered by losing their starting QB. I certainly didn’t feel bad for the Patriots.

If someone is stating that they hope a player gets his knee blown out, or breaks an arm, or suffers any type of severe injury then that is a completely different story. If the QB of a team that you hate (and I DO hate the Cowboys) is gonna miss a month for breaking his pinkie finger (an injury that will have no affect on his career as a whole) and you celebrate that fact that does not make you a horrible person.

Well, like I said

I represent just one guy’s opinion, so relax. I enjoy this site and the work that you and Brandon do here, so please don’t take my embarrassment as some personal assault on your integrity.

However, the fact remains that your original post was clearly cheering the fact that Romo got hurt. As a Packer fan, I find that type of thing embarrassing. That’s Chicago/Dallas fan type crap. If you can’t allow for that perspective after you felt compelled to offer a clarification, I don’t know what to tell you.

Enjoy the festivities. ;)

Broken Digits

Nobody deserves it, personally, but as a team, the Cowboys are mega-cocky and I’ve always thought something wasn’t right about Romo. It serves them right to get slapped now and then so they know they’re apart of this league and don’t exist in “Jerry Jones Builds a Fantasy Football Team” land.
