Brett Favre, Facts and speculations.

I normally stay away from postings on internet forums, because most of the forums are full of BS and childish name calling. But now, I’m very fed up with the extreme bashing of Brett Favre, most of it very senseless. The most childishness and the biggest “douchebags” are all the people commenting on these stories without having even half the facts. (I don’t have them either.)

Fact;  for 16 + years, Brett Favre has been one of the most celebrated players in the NFL, and perhaps the most celebrated ever in Packers history. His achievements on the field are second to no other QB in NFL history, all his records speak for them self. His gunslinger style play, and the enormous joy he shows on the field has made him probably the biggest icon in the game today. Sure, someone will always criticize him for all the interceptions, but he’s got no problem admitting to it, he’s been quoted numerous times that, with him, you’ve got to take the bad as well as the good. I’ve never ever heard him blame an interception or a loss on a teammate, he’s man enough to take the blame upon himself, even though many interceptions can be put on the shoulders of the receiving part (Robert Ferguson had quite a few balls picket out of his hands in Green Bay. His ability to overcome the bad throws/decisions, and then come back with the great ones. How many times have you seen him throw a pick that left you thinking why the heck he even threw that ball?? And then on the next series, he’ll make a couple of those patented, off balance, back across his body and the field laser/rocket completions for an important 3rd down conversion or TD ??? The throws that leave you awed and just wondering how the heck he completed them. That’s his style, and that’s why some many people tune in to see him play. Just yesterday, after throwing three horrible picks, he came back and showed enough poise to lead the Jets to victory. His stats aren’t outstanding this year, but playing in a new system, with people he hardly know, on a team with hardly average talent around him, I think he’s done great. The talent level, at all positions, is a lot better in Green Bay than the Jets.

Then add all of the off field problems throughout the years, three deaths in the family and his wife’s cancer in the more recent years. With all the media attention, it can’t be that easy being Brett Favre. Most other people would have crumbled under these circumstances.

Sure, Brett hasn’t done everything right outside the field either, he would have been better of keeping his mouth shut at times. But are the things he has been accused of even half as bad as they’re hyped up to be? The most recent things wouldn’t even have happened if Ted Thompson hadn’t squeezed Brett Favre out of Green Bay in the first place. Sure, that’s speculations, but a lot of TT’s actions since he took over seem to point towards that he wanted Favre to retire from day one, so he could create his own legacy. The soap-opera of this summer, Brett Favre has admitted that he didn’t handle things perfectly, Mike McCarthy has to some extent done the same, but Thompson has admitted nothing, and you’ve got to be pretty naïve to believe he did everything perfect. He’s probably the worst of them all, remember who he hired for his PR-work / damage control ?? Ari Fleischer, ‘nough said.

My speculations is this, this past spring/ summer, Brett Favre wanted nothing more than to return to the Packers and make a serious run at the Superbowl. Early March, he was not 100% committed yet, and not willing to go back only 80% committed, he chose to retire, prematurely. Was he forced by TT to make a decision at that time? I don’t see how it would hurt the Packers to wait one more month. But instead we had one of the worst stories ever, the only people who benefitted? Sports writers.

Other than his Vicodin-addiction and alcohol problems, that he faced openly, and kicked more than a decade ago, he’s done nothing bad (that we know about) of the field. He’s never been arrested for DUI, possession of illegal drugs, bar fights, arranging dog fights or other crimes. He’s never been accused of domestic disturbance, or beating his wife. He’s never been on a bye-week boat trip with teammates that involved strippers and prostitutes.

What he has done, is an enormous amount of charity work, benefitting thousands of under privileged children and their families, giving them hope for a decent life. So compared to a lot of other professional athletes, he’s a saint.

The most recent story, and according to some, “only the beginning”, probably something that would even be mentioned if it had been someone else doing it, but it seems like some members of the media has brought it upon themselves, for no apparent reason, to destroy a man’s legacy.

The first report made by Glazer, said Brett Favre called the Lions and gave them the entire Packers gameplan. That turned out to be untrue, and “total BS” as Favre stated in a text message to Peter King, then, he’s accused of lying about that. WHY? The BS comment was probably regarding the fact of who called who, not that it was BS that he talked to Millen at all. Glazer later changed his words to the actual truth (that Millen called Favre) and named Millen to be his source.

Sure, it was not a very good week for Favre to talk to Millen and the Lions, but Brett Favre has the right to be friends with whomever he wants, and after all those years in the NFL, he’s gotten a lot of friends around the league. The real question is how good a friend Matt Millen really is to Favre, first he calls Favre, under the cover of inviting him to go hunting, and then trying to get information about the Packers offense, and that’s not the worst part, the worst part is Millen being an a**hole and leaking the story to Glazer.

Then, the information Favre allegedly gave the Lions, well it can’t have been very accurate, the Packers crushed the Lions. The Lions wouldn’t have won even if spotted 20 pts before the game. Even if someone would have given the Lions the entire Packers playbook, it would not help them much, how the heck would they be able to guess what play they were calling at all times anyway?? And even so, X’s and O’s on a piece of paper doesn’t mean jack s**t without proper execution on the field, the winner of a football game (99% of them anyway) is who executes the fundamentals, blocking and tackling, best in the game. Vince Lombardi supposedly (don’t know if it’s true) gave out his entire playbook before SuperBowl 1, the Packers still beat the Chiefs very convincingly, once the primary (original backup)  wide receiver sobered up in the second half.

And has anyone stopped and thought that maybe Brett Favre got the better of Millen and gave him and the Lions bad information on purpose? That is off course a wild speculation, but Brett Favre is known to pull quite a few practical jokes on his friends, and it would be a pretty good practical joke to give them a load of BS information.

There’s obviously some bad blood between Brett Favre and Ted Thompson (and possibly Mike McCarthy) but, I think Brett Favre has a lot more class than to sell out his former team mates like he’s been accused to do.

So to all the people who have been lashing out at Brett Favre lately, get a life. First of all, I have serious doubts that you’re any better that what you accuse Favre to be. If you were better, you probably wouldn’t make such comments. No, I don’t think any of you are worthless as humans for doing so, but remember that 99,9% of the male population aren’t even close to be considered to play in the NFL, and try to take in to consider the enormous scrutiny the live under from week to week, and why, because the fans hype them up to be perfect all the time.

Fact; all professional athletes are humans, and all humans make mistakes from time to time. What separates great humans from the less-than-great is the ability to forgive other for their mistakes and to admit their own.

Nothing can erase all the great he has done on the field !

I agree with most of what you are saying..

I wouldn’t say that people are doushebags b/c this struck them wrong. Everyone is entitled to there opinion as are you and if this didn’t look good in there eyes they have the right to post that on here or another blog if they feel that appropriate.
Now on to what our actually topic is about. I in many ways feel the same way.. Brett Favre was a legend to Green Bay and a hero to me. He overcame many of things, brought a Super Bowl back to Green Bay and was a great person to look up to. Does he have his faults, yes absolutely. This summer was handled horribly by everyone involved (except for Aaron Rodgers who was actually in the worst position of all during all of it). We can do the whole they said this they said that thing all day long but it wasn’t handled right. Personally I’m as big of Brett Favre fan you’ll ever know. Still wear my jersey at times and have a bunch of plaques up in my man cave. The point being tho that I agreed with TT and McCarthy when they first said it was Rodgers team after Favre retired. The drama of the summer was wrong and it shouldn’t have happened the way it did but it did and everyone, including Favre, is to blame.
Now, I said this on a different post, I still follow Brett when they are on and I’m still a fan of his. But I’m a bigger Packers fan and that is where my alliance is. For the people that didn’t like the way that story came out they have every right to be mad about the way it came out and was reported as you do to call them douchebags just b/c they didn’t know all the information. If you don’t like what people write on here then don’t come to the board, but if you are going to name call and then expect people to care what you write you aren’t going to enjoy yourself here. Now i like what you wrote and i’m glad you are here to share your views but don’t pull this high and mighty crap. Many on here feel the same way that you do and some won’t but thats the joys of a blog, you come to enjoy the fact you are surround by packers fans!!!

Sorry for the run on at the end, i feel better now tho lol.

Just a reminder about the Lions game— We were LOSING 25-24 with 7 minutes left in the 4th quarter. If Kitna didn’t hand us the game on a silver platter we might have lost.

Yikes don't remind me

I will always remember trying to make deals with God, Allah, whoever would listen for the Packers to come back and win that game because right after that my 4 friends and I drove back to Chicago (they had to go back to Milwaukee, Madsion, Ripon, and Green Bay) in a down pour that took about 6-7 hours.

I think I just got called a douchebag

but it’s happened before, and it’ll probably happen again. I’ve said my piece on this matter, and I’m glad that you came out to share your opinion.

You’re absolutely right, nobody can erase what he did for 16 years on the field. That’s why I still have my Favre jersey.

opinions

Yes, of course everyone is in title to their own opinion, it’s a free country (both the US and Norway, where I am)
First, like you, I’m first of all a Packer fan, but still a Brett Favre fan, been a Packer fan since I first visited Wisconsin (before Favre)
I try as much as possible to stay away from namecalling to specific persons (ok I called Matt Millen something ..) But what I mean, if you jump to conclutions and call a person this or that before you have all the facts, maybe it’s a good idea to take a hard look at your self and maybe redeem yourself after the facts come out.

Yes, I know the Lions were ahead 25-24 in the 4th, but first of all, it was the defense (and our punter) who gave up those points. I’m quite sure Brett Favre would not have any inside scoop on the Packers defense anyway. And for the offense, it was not the Lions knowing the plays, it was a lack of execution, which very easliy happens when you jump out to a big lead early and have a fairly inexperienced QB and no running game.

And, what I forgot to write in my first post, what are those big juicy secrets Favre supposedly gave the Lions anyway ?
The Lions have tons of gamefilm on the Packers, so they should allready know most of theire tendencies.
Since there’s a new QB in town, obvioulsy there have been made a few adjustments to fit his strenghts and weaknesses, Favre would know very little about those changes.
What Favre might have said ??
- Hey, Matt, yeah, we lined up a lot of 4 and 5 wr sets, and I just threw the ball to whomever I wanted, since you couldn’t cover them….(like he actually did in the last game)
If Millen and his crew considered that a big inside scoop, no wonder they are 0 – 7

I just hope, that if any sportswriter gets a “scoop” on some current or former Packer star having supposedly been a douchebag, he’ll check his sources better, and whey his words more carefully so thing don’t come out the wrong way in the first place.

But in the end, we’re all Packer fans, and shouldn’t be spending our time calling each other names and stuff among our own, we should all reserve that for the stinkin’ Bears and those Wannabe Vikings.
No real Viking would ever were purple uniforms or play theire homegames indoors. I should know first hand, since I’m from the land of the REAL Vikings.

I completely agree..

sorry i got a little worked up there.. I just don’t like the name calling on a site that is to be used as an opinion forum. But i think after that everyone agrees on the basics:

1. About everyone loves what favre did for the packers and still follow him in some capacity still.
2. No one liked the way the matters were handled this summer no matter who was to blame.
3. Some fishy happened one way or the other with the Lions but ultimately we won the game.

I looked at as a thing that didn’t look good but in the end we won. At the end of the day I still think the Packers are the best team in the NFL North and if our defense plays the way it did against the Colts we are one of the better teams in the league (yea i said that). So lets get excited for the next 9 games and Go Packers!

and if we can all agree to that, we can finally put it to rest

Maybe you should have stuck with that approach. You accuse people of jumping to speculation about everything regarding the Favre/Lions situation but then you do the same thing repeatedly throughout your whole post.

Yes, my post is full of speculations (and facts) that’s why I called it Brett Favre – Facts and Speculations….
and I even noted it in the text were the biggest speculations are writen :-)

I understand

and I liked your post. I was just pointing out that you criticized people for “hating” on Favre based on speculation and then defended him based on speculation.

Glazergate is just one chapter

The fake cellphone story is another. The false tale of the plane chartered especially for his unretirement is another. When Leroy Butler was making the rounds of talk radio trashing Favre, he made the point that there were other stories that were going to be released. Wilde said something similar.

When asked whether any information came from the Packers, Glazer didn’t answer and instead attacked Favre. I’ve heard zero defending the claim that Favre initiated the contact. If roles were reversed, the haters would condemn Favre and claim it as evidence of guilt, but not so for Glazer. That was a key element to the story in the beginning and just faded.

Universally from every player with the exception of the rabid hater Gary Ellerson, including Fox’s Howie Long (as reported by Glazer himself), the contact was not only not unusual but extremely common. They all said that the very idea that Favre could coach the Lion’s coaches of anything significant was far-fetched.

Glazer’s claim that he was 1000 percent certain could only be true if he was there or had heard a tape of the conversation. If so his statement that the coaching session lasted 60-90 minutes doesn’t make sense. I didn’t hear anyone challenge the timeline that Favre put forward.

I also heard Jason Wilde himself explain his story “verifying” Glazer’s claims. Craig Karmazan asked him and I don’t remember exactly who he said, but I recall that his answer indicated that his sources weren’t participants and that what he was verifying was that Favre spoke to Millen. His story is grossly misleading and is consistent with his previous hatred of Favre.

But whether the tale is true or not isn’t really the story. The Packers hired Ari Fleischer as a consultant and the pattern of behavior is consistent with his previous work. McCarthy refused to give any meaningful answers in the press conference. Thompson never provided relevant information and kept saying it was “for the Packers.” Previous clients when challenged about actions referred to their actions as “for America.” The idiotic story by Wilde about how Thompson is a faithful follower of Jesus right after the miscellaneous stories and likely lies about how the Packers were going to put Favre on the roster as a back-up as well as others fits the pattern as well. Previous Ari Fleischer clients did exactly the same thing.

Claiming moral superiority, refusing to answer questions that every shareholder and fan deserve, along with the regular appearance of leaks from the Packers (with no Packers comments to appear distant) attacking Favre is classic Ari Fleischer.

More are coming. Their truth isn’t relevant. Five, 10 or 20 years later people will still refer to them as true and more importantly you’ll hear people generalize about Favre’s “antics” or his dishonesty et cetera.
