Packers back at it after bye

Green Bay - The Packers are on the practice field for the first time since the bye week.

Here are some of the things coach Mike McCarthy had to say in a press conference before practice:

  • McCarthy said he is sleeping "periodically" since the birth of his daughter.
  • Four players won't practice today: DE Jason Hunter (hamstring), LB Danny Lansanah (hamstring), QB Aaron Rodgers (shoulder) and CB Charles Woodson (toe). Hunter and Lansanah will test Tuesday and then hopefully go on Wednesday. McCarthy wants to see how Rodgers is today and would like to get two practices out of him this week.
  • S Atari Bigby and DE Michael Montgomery are back.
  • WR James Jones (knee) and CB Al Harris (spleen) are back on a trial basis.
  • Today's practice is padded with a focus on fundamentals.
  • As far as the injury self scout, the Packers looked hard at the number of hamstring injuries and have changed a few things up. For both practices and games, the team will have longer periods of warm-ups and stretching. They will also try to keep players core temperatures up, as many of the injuries came from players that don't play a whole lot of snaps.
  • McCarthy said there were no "major" tendencies revealed in the self scout.
  • McCarthy was asked whether he would prefer not to hear anything about Brett Favre for the rest of the season: "I'll just say this, it's unfortunate, I think, for everybody involved. No disrespect to the national media, I think every time that I get involved in a conversation on a certain topic, there's always an angle that wants to go back to Brett or to what happened. It's unfortunate but that's just the way it is. I don't think it's fair to him, I don't think it's fair to the Jets and my focus is simple: I don't want it in my locker room and I don't want our players to feel like they have to answer questions that, first of all, they're not educated on because they don't know exactly what so and so said or this and that. So we just want to stay above it and don't want to deal with it because it doesn't help us beat Tennessee and that's the truth. I don't want to get into who said what or who did that because we don't want any part of it. It's something that's in the past. We have moved forward.

Did you know our coach was once a toll collector

on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. He’s from Pittsburgh, so I’m assuming it was around there. Man, I’ve been on the Pennsylvania turnpike dozens of times in my twenty year life, especially the area around Pittsburgh. I just have to wonder……

Congrats to Coach McCarthy on the kid! Coaching an NFL team is more than a load, but having a newborn too.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Sleep deprivation

Hey, it’s a type of torture! I would imagine he doesn’t get much sleep during football season anyway, but he’s probably not getting more than three hours sleep at a time. Hopefully Mike’s the type of guy who can roll over and go back to sleep easily.

I thought I heard somewhere

that he was actually a toll collector during the early parts of his coaching career, doing both jobs at once. I do believe it was on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. So I guess he’s been conditioned to sleep very little and still be effective.

Frye is honestly gotta be one of the top 10 3rd Stringers in all of the NFL right now--colbyb

Injuries

Wow. Nearly everyone is back, or should be back later this week, except for the guys on IR, especially DE Cullen Jenkins, and I’m assuming DT Justin Harrell isn’t back quite yet but maybe he is practicing.

I've got a feeling we'll be seeing everyone back

except Al Harris. Just a gut feeling, but I doubt we need a top cover corner against Tennessee and their duo of White/Johnson. Better to give him one more week than to rush him back and risk re-injury.

Very very excited to see everyone else get back, though.

I'm new here, so this might be a stupid question

but what is an injury self scout?
