Barnett tore his knee; placed on I.R.
During his Monday press conference, McCarthy announced that Nick Barnett will undergo surgery to repair the torn knee ligament he suffered in Green Bay's loss to the Vikings Sunday and will be out for the season.
Barnett currently leads the team in tackles with 63, but that's about all he's done. We know Nick will play next year; he signed a pretty big contract.
The question is; Is this a huge loss?

This is bad news
No matter how poorly he has played this year this is a huge loss. Do we move Hawk into the middle and go with Chillar and Poppinga on the outside? Bishop in the middle and Hawk and Poppinga staying outside with Chillar filling in? The only thing is that our Run D can’t be any worse….can it?

Bishop is probably better than Barnett at stopping the run
The reason he doesn’t start is that he can’t cover backs out of the backfield. But it looks like AJs gonna man the middle now. Really, the problem with the run defense is that our interior lineman are never playing in the opponents backfield and linebackers are missing ill-timed run fills. Needless to say, Atari’s gonna need to play in the box a little more this week.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Ouch
This is possibly a harbinger of missing the playoffs. First Jenkins gets put on I.R, then Bigby/Harris/Hawk are hurt for a long while, and now Barnett’s done for the year?
Our defense simply can’t function without both Jenkins and Barnett. Even though he’s had an off-year, he’s still a top MLB, and he will be sorely missed.

Hurts.. A lot!!!
Like Seifert said in his espn.com blog, Barnett isn’t having a Pro Bowl year but he still is an anchor in the middle of our linebackers. It will make an already poor rush defense probably worse. Things like this happening make it hurt even more that we released a guy like Hodge at the beginning of the season too, since he did play well in some of his action last year.
