Open Thread: Green Bay at New Orleans

Green Bay Packers at New Orleans Saints, Nov 24, 2008 7:30 PM CST

Green Bay Packers at New Orleans Saints

Monday, November 24th, 2008
7:30pm CST, ESPN
This is an open thread for the game.

Inactives from NFL.com:

Packers: QB Brian Brohm (3rd), WR James Jones, LB Nick Barnett, OT Breno Giacomini, DB Charlie Peprah, RB DeShawn Wynn, OL Allen Barbre, DE Jeremy Thompson.

Analysis: CB Charles Woodson is active and will start, as expected. WR Jordy Nelson will see time in the slot with Jones out.

Saints: QB Joey Harrington (3rd), RB Reggie Bush, WR David Patten, FB Mike Karney, LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar, CB Aaron Glenn, CB David Pittman, OT Jermon Bushrod.

Analysis: Bush is inactives, so RB Deuce McAllister will start and share carries with RB Pierre Thomas. The latter figures to be the better bet for fantasy points. WR Marques Colston is active and will start, as expected.

No surprises for the Packers. Barnett is done for the season after his knee injury. Jones is healthy, but the Packers have only had 4 WRs active for most of the games this season. WR Ruvell Martin gets the nod over Jones this week. I don't know what that nonsense about "WR Jordy Nelson will see time in the slot with Jones out." Nelson has been ahead of Jones all of 2008. Thompson is still out with a groin injury. Again this week they've kept only two RBs active and Wynn is inactive.

The big news is that RB Reggie Bush is again inactive. He's been almost back from injury the past two weeks. It looks like the Saints will have to wait another week.

I can't see a whole lot of running today

It’ll resemble a 1980s Dolphins/Chargers game I reckon. :)

here we go…

72-90 - TIMMY FOR CY YOUNG!!!

TOUCHDOWN

72-90 - TIMMY FOR CY YOUNG!!!

Kuhnnnnn

Nice call. Quick play before the linebackers can react.

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 7:55 PM CST reply actions

I liked it

because it followed the same quick-handoff to the FB on 1st down

most NFL teams wouldn’t expect the exact same play twice in a row, especially when you involve a relative nobody like Kuhn, so good call by McCarthy and nice finish by Rodgers/Grant (faking the pitch right)

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 7:56 PM CST up reply actions

Special teams is always key...

we got a short field thanks to special teams…Frost with a good punt (48 yards)…now let’s get good coverage and win the battle for field position

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 7:56 PM CST reply actions

It helps

I was checking on Football Outsiders. The Saints have a poor punt coverage unit while the Packers punt return unit is pretty good. But the Saints have arguably the best punt return unit this season. Unfortunately that’’s due to Reggie Bush, who isn’t playing tonight.

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 8:00 PM CST up reply actions

Less running

from the Saints this drive I reckon.

by rudi on Nov 24, 2008 7:58 PM CST reply actions

oh good!

I hope they pass it 50 times…

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

bad bad bad bad bad

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 8:01 PM CST reply actions

Blitz

That’s why I hate the blitz. Too often the blitzer doesn’t get there, Charles Woodson blitzed and didn’t get there that time. Bigby took a bad angle and there was no one else. That Packers rarely blitz, so I’m surprised they tried it with Woodson.

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 8:02 PM CST reply actions

bigby

horrible angle it seems…or something…and nick collins our last line of defense was blocked out

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:02 PM CST reply actions

Nice move

A couple other guys had a chance too, but Moore did a good job of avoiding them.

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 8:03 PM CST up reply actions

just keep woodson all over lance moore

and they kid won’t breathe…he will choke the life out of him…dont blitz him

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:03 PM CST reply actions

Who were you blocking Tony?

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 8:06 PM CST reply actions

no one

this does not bode well

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 8:07 PM CST up reply actions

Rodgers

Aaron’s missed a couple receivers. Jennings on the last drive. Now Lee on the slant. Lee was open.

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 8:07 PM CST reply actions

it's been noticeable

I don’t know what the issue is, but something seems off in the passing game.

either Rodgers isn’t using his mechanics properly or the recievers’ timing is off. Either one is a huge problem.

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 8:08 PM CST up reply actions

awesome

a step short and a few marbles short on defense…offense ain’t that much better…

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:14 PM CST up reply actions

let me correct myself...

a hot knife through melting butter…

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:13 PM CST reply actions

Typical run against the Packers

The defensive tackles do nothing, the linebackers get blocked, and there’s a big cut back lane for the running back. It’s been happening all year.

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 8:14 PM CST reply actions

I suspect

that it has a lot to do with Cullen Jenkins being out

at end, he was big and strong enough to either merit a double team or push his man back on running plays, which creates more room for the DT’s to take up rather than offensive linemen

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

the theory is you never

…lose yards runing the ball in the zone blocking scheme

This is gonna be a shootout.

Good game.

"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"

by BrewerLover on Nov 24, 2008 8:23 PM CST reply actions

lets look at some numbers, shall we?

Aaron Rodgers is 4/9 for 46 yards. At least three of those incompletions were surefire 20+ yard gains where Rodgers made a poor throw to an open reciever. He needs to settle down.

Ryan Grant has 55 yards on 11 touches. Keep it up, young man.

Drew Brees is already over 100 yards. If the defense can get it together and cover/take angles properly, they can limit those opportunities for New Orleans.

On to the second quarter!

haha...

that drive was saawwweet…72 yards about 5 minutes TOP

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:27 PM CST reply actions

The Packers are gonna win.

Both of the Saints scores were flukes. They dont look like they can stop the packers.

by BrewerLover on Nov 24, 2008 8:27 PM CST reply actions

I agree...

I think that lance moore touchdown was a fluke and our secondary will step up….

And Arodge is just too accurate to keep missing these open passes….

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

the defense

needs to make sure they execute properly and not get caught out of position again

otherwise, i will agree with you

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 8:29 PM CST up reply actions

I am very interested to learn more about Mark Tauscher's hamstring situation

OUTSTANDING

Great play in kick coverage. I thought he was going to break it.

bah

a gamble that didn’t pay off

i’ll give charles woodson the benefit of the doubt, but next time just knock it down please

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 8:31 PM CST reply actions

come ON

you can’t let brees find an open target, because he will always hit him

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 8:32 PM CST reply actions

I missed the TD

Who calls at 2.30 in the morning, for god’s sake??

So what happened please?

by rudi on Nov 24, 2008 8:32 PM CST reply actions

Blitz

I was critical of it earlier, but they have to dial it up with the LBs more. They aren’t getting to Brees and the LBs aren’t great in coverage anyway. They can give them all the passes to the TE and RBs they want. Keep it away from their wide receivers.

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 8:33 PM CST reply actions

it would probably help

if brees wasn’t hitting recievers at better than a 90% completion rating

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

WTF

by BrewerLover on Nov 24, 2008 8:36 PM CST reply actions

So what's the solution?

Bring more guys or flood the backfield? At the moment it’s not enough of either.

by rudi on Nov 24, 2008 8:36 PM CST reply actions

Tie them tight

It looks like Nick Collins lost his shoe, lost the coverage, TD for Moore.

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 8:37 PM CST reply actions

good golly miss molly

to quote Led Zeppellin, we loook “dazed and confused” out there….

I guess we know why mccarthy is blitzing…Brees is standing back there like a statue all day long…we cant cover ’em forever…

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:37 PM CST reply actions

the thing i just noticed about lance moore

when he stretched out to get the score, the ball hit the ground with his hand on the side of it…but when the ball hit the ground, he didn’t lose it

lance moore has some BIG friggin hands. He’s also clearly got dangerous speed. something needs to be done about this

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 8:37 PM CST reply actions

Actually...

remember when New Orleans drafter Robert Meacham? during spring camp or training camp, Lance Moore outclassed MEacham…and we see now that Meachem is no where to be found and lance moore is really now Brees goto guy

what

the bloody hell

was that

did jordy nelson just not see the guy? Or did # 58 just not feel like blocking anymore?

under 3 minutes to go...

this is the 14TH PLAY IN THE DRIVE COMING UP

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:49 PM CST reply actions

oopos 2 minute warning...

I like that we are resting our defense…I think we have held the ball for about 18 minutes this half…saints about 9 minutes

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:50 PM CST reply actions

Eventually that will have an effect on their defense.

Hopefully we will capitalize.

"Get up, get up, get outta' here, GONE!!!"

by BrewerLover on Nov 24, 2008 8:50 PM CST up reply actions

If the Packers

can use their time wisely and score a TD inside two minutes, thus limiting New Orleans’ opportunity to get a score of their own before halftime, they will be in good position at the half

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 8:50 PM CST reply actions

Arodge is creeping toward

normalcy…after starting up 4 out 9, he is 10 out 16 (or 6 out of his last 7)

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:51 PM CST reply actions

Something like that

He’s looked a lot more accurate on the last two drives.

by Brandon on Nov 24, 2008 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

this third down is crucial

it gives the pack a chance to tie it up if they convert

conversely, if they are limited to a field goal, that gives N’Awlins far too much time left on the clock, even if they only have one timeout left

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 8:53 PM CST reply actions

Funny statistic...

New orleans 186 total yards, green bay, 185 yards…lol wow

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 8:54 PM CST reply actions

for some reason

my gut says that we should try to float up a fade to big ol’ Ruvell Martin here

so it's 24-21 at the half

time to look at some more numbers!

Drew Brees is 13/16 for 194 yards and two TD’s. Dude’s simply on fire, but the pass defense isn’t playing up to snuff either.

Ryan Grant has 83 yards on 19 touches. Not bad, but the team needs to stick with him, especially on early downs. It’s just working today.

Aaron Rodgers has calmed down considerably, overcoming a horrid start to end up with 108 yards on 11/17 passing, including one TD. He also has 3 carries for 19 yards and another TD on the ground. So long as he sorts himself out at halftime, I think he’ll continue to play at the high standard he’s set for himself.

The Saints are averaging 9.2 yards per offensive play, compared to 5.0 for Green Bay. This needs to swing the other way ::giggle:: for the Packers to get a win.

What else do you guys think?

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 9:10 PM CST reply actions

dont forget special teams!

three times we gave them GREAT field position (twice due to returns, once because of a bad punt)

we also have zero turnovers and zero penalties! wow

by PackFaninFL on Nov 24, 2008 9:14 PM CST up reply actions

Oh and also...

I forgot to mention that the time of possession in the first was about 20 minutes (us) versus 10 minutes (them) and we are running the ball more so maybe we can wear them out…other than that, I’m fully expecting to throw all the stats out the window and witness some unpredictable second half

Aaron Rodgers looks unsettled

and I don’t know if it’s a problem with his mechanics, bad timing with/by the recievers, or a general lack of experience, or a combination thereof.

All I know is that Rodgers is better than this and he can learn from his mistakes like other great QB’s have.

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 9:49 PM CST reply actions

wow

that was the LAZIEST finish on a route I’ve ever seen by a reciever. Jordy Nelson is touted as a hard-worker and a consistent player, but that was awful.

it didn’t help that Rodgers threw it to the inside shoulder, where David was just begging him to put it. Bad decision on his part

I'm done

This inconsitency is killing me. we’re great one week and shitty the next. The only way I can see us getting into the playoffs is winning all of our next 5 games (10-6) and maybe, maybe making it with a 4-1 record (9-7.) Right now, at this moment, there is no way in hell that this team can do that against Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Caroline and Jacksonville. No gimmes there except maybe Detroit. Looks pretty grim, but then again, I’m pretty friggin’ upset right now. Ugh and more ugh. If I had one word for this game it would probably be shit. Because that’s what we’ve played like. UGH.

drew brees is a frickin’ juggernaut

by Mitchell Maurer on Nov 24, 2008 10:50 PM CST reply actions

yeah juggernaut alright...

Man to me this was the tale of two halfs…the first half I thought our offense was pretty friggin solid, we won the time of possession battle, we were even with them in yards…ryan grant had over 60 yards russing at the half…but our special teams let us down bad..

The second half, forget it…two early turnovers and then they just tee’d off on us and attacked us…we became one dimensional on offense and the rest is history.

But also, like you said, Breeze was on target…he didn’t make a single imprecise pass…everything was on a rope, a laser…
