Hit Me: Questions About The Houston Texans?
Howdy, Cheeseheads. I'm Tim, one of the writers over at SB Nation's site for all things Houston Texan, Battle Red Blog. Seeing as how Brandon was kind enough to head over to our neck of the woods to field questions about your beloved Packers, I figure it's only neighborly of me to extend the same courtesy to the great community at APC.
So hit me with your queries, Packer fans. I'll do my best to answer them. Want to know whether we have any regrets about taking that Mario Williams fella back in '06? I'll giggle and respond. Wondering about the state of the QBs in Houston? I'll rant about the Rosencopter, black out, and then remember that Matt Schaub should make his return to the field on Sunday. Want to prod me about how underwhelming the Houston defense has been? I'll solemnly nod and start to sob.
Have at it, folks. Best of luck on Sunday, and here's to a great game that sees everyone emerge healthy.

I have to give props to the Texans front office for having the balls to take Mario in that spot. I have defended that pick amongst my friends since it happened (and even have a $100 bet with a buddy that said Vince Young will be in the HOF someday). Mario is an ELITE player now and still has the potential to get even better.
Our teams also have something in common. We both have an under/non performing 2007 1st round pick defensive tackle.

True
Thanks for the kind words about Super Mario. And you’re right—both of our squads are currently plagued by underwhelming 2007 first-round DTs. We’re in even worse shape, I think, as we also have a complete bust 2005 first-round DT to complement him.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

yes I wasn’t gonna mention Johnson. At least I think he has a sack this year. One more than Okoye and Harrell combined.
Its amazing the DeMeco is even free to tackle anybody with those 2 in front of him

How has Amobi Okoye been?
Also, would you guys have a problem with the Titans ever wearing Houston Oilers throwbacks? If I was a Texans fan, I know I would.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I can help Tim a little
Amobi has been, to be frank, a disappointment this season. He has basically been invisible. He showed some signs of life against the Jags, but it is fair to say he has gone backwards this year. He’s only 20, though, so it’s too early to give up hope on him yet.
And yes, without a doubt, I would have a huge problem with the Titans wearing Oilers throwbacks.

What TGC Said
Amobi’s been MIA most of this year. The question is whether we missed on him, or if he just needs a big DT next to him to let him thrive. We’re definitely not giving up on him yet.

RE: The Oilers uniform question...
I think this might give you a good idea of how some of us feel about it.

How good is Andre Johnson?
I know that Houston has had some QB issues between Schaub’s injury and Rosenfels’ suckitude, but A.J. has still put up some great stats. But stats don’t tell the whole story: how does Johnson affect the Houston offense?

Johnson
Is everything you’ve read about and more. He is the quintessential professional, has the best attitude, and is a freakish athlete. If your pass defense is shaky, he is the absolute last guy you would want to face. He is big, fast, has great hands, runs precise routes and can get yards after the catch. I think a lot of people in the Texans blogosphere would volunteer to have his babies.
He is truly amazing. As far as how he affects the offense, it’s fair to say that he is hugely important to it. The good news for Texans fans, however, is that we have other weapons on offense, so if a team starts to double AJ we have other targets to hit (plus, AJ can still get the ball when doubled — see his amazing fourth-and-long grab in the fourth quarter against Miami). If you try to take away AJ, we still have Kevin Walter, who is very underrated in his own right. Or Slaton, who has a very good set of hands, out of the backfield. Or Owen Daniels, one of the top pass-catching tight ends in the AFC.
So, to summarize, AJ is as good a receiver as there is in this league, but he’s far from our only weapon on offense.

Ditto
I’m admittedly biased, but I think ’Dre is the best WR in the league. No one outside of Houston knows about him due to the lack of coverage received by our beloved squad.

Just another great player
from the greatest college football team of all time, the 2001 miami hurricanes.

I don't get to ask this kind of question often...
Hey, the Texans have drafted two my alma mater’s (South Carolina) best NFL prospects of the last ten years in Fred Bennett and Dunta Robinson. How do Texans fans feel about them, and do you think they have a future with the franchise?
by Weldon on Dec 4, 2008 6:33 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
Fred and Dunta
In short, we love ‘em both. Let’s start with Dunta…
Despite DeMeco and Super Mario likely possessing more raw talent than Dunta, Dunta is unquestionably the leader of the defense. He brings the swagger, and there is not another CB in the league who hits as hard as he does. Dunta has always been a stud against the run, and prior to his injury last year (which was one of the most sickening I’ve ever seen), he was playing as well in coverage as any DB in the league. Were it not for that injury, I think he would’ve made the Pro Bowl.
Personally, I didn’t believe there was any way Dunta would be back this season; if he did come back, I reasoned, he’d be a step slow and ineffective at CB, possibly requiring a move to FS. Oh, how wrong I was. He came back a few weeks ago (side note: check out this video of Dunta’s return; he wasn’t starting, but they introduced him anyway at the very end…I may or may not have gotten choked up at that point). After shaking off the rust the first couple of weeks, he’s slid back into the starting lineup and is quickly approaching his pre-injury form. Dunta’s a free agent at year’s end, but he’s said he doesn’t want to leave, and I can’t imagine the team letting him go. He’s too important to the defense. When it’s all said and done, I think you’ll see his #23 retired at Reliant Stadium.
Fred Bennett’s a bit of a conundrum at this point. After being thrust into the starting lineup about halfway through last season, Bennett was a revelation. He made big play after big play, and we thought we were set at CB for the next few years with the Gamecock tandem. This year, however, he’s regressed, losing his starting job (far too early, in my opinion) to Petey Faggins (who Bennett unseated last year; Petey is simply awful and was subsequently replaced by Dunta this season). He’s still in the rotation at CB, but he hasn’t looked good in limited action. Not sure why this has happened; have teams simply figured out his tendencies now that there’s tape on him? Regardless, I think the Texans fan base is still bullish on him. He was too good for too long last year to think he can’t be a big part of the future. That, and all he has to do is beat out Jacques Reeves to start again. Given Jacques’ persistent refusal to ever raise his arms above his waist and/or turn his head to find the ball, that shouldn’t be too tall a task.

What about
Jonathan Joseph?

Yeah, I was being a little too modest there. USC has actually produced a number of good defensive backs over the last 8 years – the two from Houston, JJ, and also Sheldon Brown and Andre Goodman. I’m probably forgetting somebody…
Anyway, thanks for the answer, Tim. I’ll have to visit your site more often to check up on them, especially Bennett. He’s a good dude. I hope he bounces back soon.

My Pleasure, Weldon
I’m with you in hoping Bennett bounces back in a big way.
