While I cant seem to find anything on current contracts. I know Tauscher is a FA after this year but not sure on anyone else. So with a disappointing year thus far and the front page already looking to the 09 season so will i. so who does everyone think we need to resign or let walk and who we should seek in the draft, FA, or trades this offseason? What is our fix now position?

Unfortunately, it isn't very simple for GB,

as the positions that could be considered “fix now” positions are problems not because of lack of talent, but because of lack of health. Clifton and Tauscher are solid tackles, but they were not healthy. Josh Sitton caused the offensive line to get shuffled around and reorganized when he got hurt. Ryan Grant took for-freaking-ever to recover from his pulled hamstring. Cullen Jenkins’ injury was devastating to the defensive line, where once-considered marginal contributors were forced into more prominent roles they were not ready for (i.e. Jeremy Thompson, Mike Montgomery, etc.) The pass defense was good, and still would be if Bigby, Collins, and Rouse weren’t battling injury. Plus taking A.J. Hawk, who’s had a nagging groin injury, and putting him in the middle while taking Desmond Bishop, a Mike linebacker by trade, and putting him outside in response to Brandon Chillar’s injury causes all sorts of confusion.

Everyone may say that the 2004 season was worse injury-wise, but this year’s Packers team certainly wasn’t spared from the injury bug. I think when that many players get put out of position (i.e. Hawk to middle, Woodson to safety), it kills the chemistry the team had and forces them to regroup, which is something you simply can’t do mid-season. That’s why health is such a big factor in winning. Look at Tennessee; they’ve been healthy for most of the year, and they’ve been winning.

Conversely, you could point to New York and New England and argue that health isn’t as important as depth, and you’d have a strong argument. However, New England has the most effective system in the NFL, and the Giants somehow managed to stockpile Justin Tuck on the lineup for when Umenyora went down.

Remember back earlier in the season, when people were questioning the Packers’ training staff and how they handled muscle pulls and were worried that there was a hamstring/calf epidemic going around? I think that proper preparation and treatment from the medical staff is the best way to prevent any problems. Not to say that it’s all the medical staff’s fault, as an ACL or broken bone is impossible to prevent. But something was clearly preventing players from contributing consistently.

All that said, I think Green Bay has loads of talent that just needs to get time on the field all at once, and the team will be fine. However, a position I think needs to be addressed is defensive line depth, specifically for the pass rush. Other than Aaron Kampman, no one on the roster can get into the pocket for a sack. (I see you, Jason Hunter.) It didn’t help that KGB was cut so early, but then again, he’s unemployed right now anyway, so he was probably washed up anyway.

I probably could have made a post about all that. Maybe I will…later.

I know health

is/was a big factor for us this year. but with Tauscher having a torn ACL now does good ole idiot Ted Thompson resign him unknowning his status? I think he better but who knows with Ted! although we are one of the youngest teams it seems like our starters are getting older. I think we do need to stock some depth for the secondary this off season and let them watch two of the best corners in the league.

Depth at the secondary may not be necessary

After all, Tramon Williams has looked like an impact player this year. He should be able to take one spot, and I have a feeling that Pat Lee has all the necessary tools to become a lockdown corner. He needs to work on his mental aspect of the game, and watching Woodson and Harris will certainly help with that.

As far as Tauscher goes, I don’t have a problem with resigning him, but his replacement needs to be brought in. Whether we let Tony Moll have a shot at it, draft a RT, or sign a young one from somewhere else. As was brought up elsewhere, Tauscher’s injury is good for the Packers because it significantly lowers his value, meaning he can be resigned at a much lower cost than would be necessary were he uninjured. It also helps that he’s a Wisconsin guy and is somewhat loyal to the team. Then again, that doesn’t necessarily mean a whole lot in the NFL. If he can get healthy and if he wants to be here, he will certainly be an asset to the team, both on the field and against the cap.

agree

I think Tauscher is a great player and still deserves to be a Packer if he wants to. McCarthy should be using these last few games as a preseason type i think Moll and some of the other back ups finally need to perform if they dont bring in new people this offseason! The Oline has been banged up this year and very flag friendly so I think we need to bring in some new facs for that.
i agree with Tramon becoming a heck of player! i just dont know yet about Lee. He has the signs of being good and just is not all there. kinda reminds me of good ole Carrol(waste he was) one thing i think we really do need to look at in the draft is Dline

This season proved we do not have adequate depth at the ends and maybe the depth we THOUGHT we had in the middle is not all there as we can not stop the run either. I know we have the talent and injuires stopping us from the rotation we had last year on the line but i still think we need to do something to backup Kamp and Jenks on the pass rush

Offensive position players i think we have some of the best. We probably have some of the most depth at the WR pos. especially with Jordy Nelson performing well this year. BUT McCarthy needs to let Rodgers use his WRs do more 5 wide. Rodgers will have a season under his belt and all the Brett comparison behind him next year and will play even better. Grant will hopefully have a healhy line next year and B Jacks is starting to show why we drafted him! hopefully next year we will ultilize the two backs.
