Packers interested in Jason Taylor?
According to ESPN.com, Green Bay has inquired about availability of star defensive end and dancing fiend Jason Taylor. Taylor, who will turn 34 in September, was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year last season (on the worst team in the league) and deservedly so.
Green Bay sure could use a defensive lineman of Taylor's skill level after trading Corey Williams to Cleveland and KGB's offseason knee surgery. It's not like Ted Thompson to trade for a player using draft picks, but it seems that the Dolphins are looking for a 2nd rounder as compensation.
ESPN.com's Chris Mortensen writes that the deal has Ron Wolf's prints all over it. Wolf, of course, was responsible for putting the 1996 championship team together, and also he served as a mentor for current GM Ted Thompson.
In the event this trade does happen, Green Bay would be putting out a defensive front of Taylor and Kampman at the ends, Pickett and Cullen Jenkins at the tackles, with KGB, Justin Harrell, Johnny Jolly, et cetera filling out the rotation.
Wow. Sure seems like it'd be worth a second round pick to me.

Most def worth it
This would be huge, the DE would be so solid, and maybe the best combo in the league… our defense would be old, but take a shot next year, show we can win without Favre, and win with our solid defense.
The Packers are enough under the cap where they can take a flier. Let’s say he has a great year, and the Packers have success, he could be back again. A quality guy and a hard worker, no matter how many jokes are put out there about Dancing with the Stars, could be just below the impact of the Randy Moss acquisition.
The designated hitter rule is like letting someone else take Wilt Chamberlain's free throws.

Taylor
I wouldn’t mind taking the chance on Taylor for a 3rd or a 4th. Doubt about it for a 2nd… If it was a 3rd or 4th, I would also want a committment to 2 years! A one year flier isn’t worth it for just this year, due in part to Rodgers inexperience as a starter. Don’t get me wrong, I think Rodgers will do very well as our QB, but think it will likely take a year before he is ready to take us to the SB. For a 5th I would do a one year, but anything higher and I want a 2 year commit.
Miami can say all they want about not wanting to trade him, but the entire league knows he is as good as gone! Not alot of teams interest Taylor, but GB certainly qualifies.
His contract means little, its the draft pick that is a little too rich for my tastes.
Imagine on passing downs… Taylor and KGB at the DE, move Kampman inside along w/ Jenkins! That would be very similar too NYG, when they ran Tuck out at DT to rush the QB… THe NFL is a copycat league, and that type of DL approach is going to become really popular IMO…

I Doubt It Happens
They could use more pass rush from their defensive line and Taylor could help, but it would mean moving Kampman inside to take advantage of Taylor as an extra rusher. That would work as long as a true defensive tackle like Pickett plays alongside them. Realistically Taylor (since he’s always played on that side) would take KGB’s right end (where he’s always played too) place, but KGB had 11.5 sacks last season (including playoffs) so Taylor isn’t going to improve much on what KGB brings as a pass rusher. Taylor’s always been undersized, so I can’t imagine he’s a better run stopper Cullen Jenkins or Mike Montgomery (depending who plays on rushing downs next season). I think Mortenson looked around the league and saw a former Miami coach (Bob Sanders) is now the defensive coordinator in Green Bay and the rumor was begun.
Ron Wolf did trade picks for players, but he did it more early in his run with the Packers when he was trying to fix the mess he inherited from Lindy Infante and taking some chances. Thompson’s not taking those types of risks to rebuild, and with a 13-3 team he doesn’t need to rebuild. I’m writing after drinking two Belgian Ales so my memory is fuzzy at the moment, but I can’t remember Thompson ever trading a pick for a player. He didn’t trade one for Moss, and I can’t imagine he trade one now for Taylor.
