Favre Requests Unconditional Release

The two most annoying things in the NFL, ESPN and Brett Favre, have teamed up to spawn the third most annoying thing in the NFL, the story entirely substantiated by an undisclosed source. Given the juicy details and Fav-RAY petting that concludes the story--

Ooohh!

He appeared to be in excellent physical condition and threw the ball with ease, even throwing a football 50 yards "on a rope" with high school receivers. He has been throwing and running with the team for more than a month.

I'd guess the source to be Favre or Favre's agent, Snaky McCashRegister.

All due respect Packers fans, this makes a lot of sense. We've all known for some time the fact, the destiny, written in God's library that Bret Favre must die on the field, throwing a pick.

Anyway, here's hoping that wherever he lands he sucks. I've never been a Favre-hater, but one can stand only so much this circus sideshow--and I can't standz no mo!

Legacy Tarnished Forever...

If he gets released and goes to another NFC North Team (Bears & Vikings).

I don't understand

Here’s how I look at what the decision should be:
If Favre had never retired, who would be our starting quarterback this fall?
Pretty simple answer: Brett Favre. Let him play.

except for one teensy tiny thing

The guy retired. The team moved on, the offense changed, and the team friggin started adjusting to the new guy.

you simply cannot underestimate how important that is. If he never retired, the offense would have never changed, A-Rodg would have stayed a backup, and this whole hoopla would be avoided.

Fuckin’ Favre. Every year it gets worse. Just watch, next year he’ll report to training camp, and then sit out the first practice because he’s “not sure” what he wants to do.

Well

Considering training camp hasn’t started yet, they could probably re-adjust back to Favre. Especially since he’s kinda played for them before and they sorta know what they’re working with.

Brett Favre has earned just a little respect and benefit of the doubt.

After seeing his interview with Van Susteren and feel differently. I was completely buying all of the “statements” being released by Thompson. Now I don’t. I do believe that Favre is telling the truth. He has proven to be that kind of guy over the 17 years in NFL.
Thompson is a slimy business man and you can tell that when he answers his questions by not looking up. His body language is untruth.
The reality is this. Favre is one of the best QB’s in the NFL still today and could possibly take the Pack to the Superbowl a few more times in the next years.
He deserves the respect to get to do that. They should trade Rodgers and prep Brohm to takeover in the coming years.
Favre should start no question and Thompson should be booted out of Greenbay.
He stinks!

Should we go over why Brett doesn't "trust" TT?

1. Brett wanted Moss for ‘07 and TT decided against it.
Result: Moss wouldn’t have made us any better last year. We finished 13-3 and lost in the NFC Championship game.
Who was right in retrospect: TT

2. Brett wanted to resign Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle
Result: Rivera is now retired and Wahle has been cut by the Panthers. Neither one would have been beneficial at all to us last year and would have cost us millions that we would still be paying for. We wouldn’t have been in the NFC Championship game if we had signed them and wouldn’t have had young up and coming guards.
Who was right in retrospect: TT

3. Brett wanted to bring in his buddy Mariucci to coach instead of McCarthy
Result: We went from a 4-12 team to a team that went 13-3 and made the NFC Championship in two years with McCarthy. Would we have done that with Mooch?
Who was right in retrospect: TT

His first couple of years I hated TT for not going after free agents (besides Woodson) and not adding any RB’s or WR’s and sticking to the draft. Now that his theory has paid off and we have a young talented team that isn’t strapped for cash thanks to the foolish contracts I would have advocated, I trust him completely. Oh yeah, it turns out he was right about Javon Walker too. I’m much happier with Greg Jennings now. Aren’t you?

Don't blame Favre for the circus

The circus comes from the media, not the person. Favre didn’t contact the media and say “hey I am about to contact the packers organization and let them know I regret my decision to retire, so please stay on top of this and follow every move that is being made”. People shouldn’t hate on Favre for the circus this has created. In reality, for all us normal folk, who cares if Favre changes his decision, gets traded, picks flowers on the side of the road. Eventually, he will leave like all the great players do, and the next wanna be Favre will come along trying to get their shot at being the next face of the Packers.
I am not a Packer or Favre fan, but I don’t judge the guy on changing his mind. We all have changed on minds on leaving jobs, leaving a relationship, whatever. The difference is for us it doesn’t get published for all the world to know about. I personally think he should mow his 400 acres, fish, sleep in till noon. But that’s just what I would do if I could retire a multi-millionaire at 39. Then again, I am not a talented football that missed going to the Super Bowl by one game.

maybe Brett didn’t contact the media himself (that would involve him actually making a decision) but he sure has had his agent, his mom, his brother, etc. contact the media on his behalf. Do you think that all of these people did this without his consent? Do you think that Brett doesn’t know that his agents convenient “leaks” would start a media firestorm? What about Brett’s contact with his local reporter saying that all of this was “just a rumor” and that the media circus was “unnecessary?” And then his reporter (his longtime friend) writes a piece bashing Thompson. Brett is having intermediaries do his dirty work for him. And when he finally talks for himself he goes to Greta Van Sustern who asked him zero challenging questions. She didn’t ask him once about his double flip-flop at the end of March. Didn’t press him when he gave the weakest 100% commitment known to man. Didn’t ask him why the Packers should allow him out of his contract when he publicly stated that Javon Walker should honor his contract. Just one softball after another. You can’t tell me that Favre bears no responsibility for this. This has nothing to do with Brett changing his mind. It has to do with his timing and how he thinks that he operates under a different set of rules than everyone else.

Didn't say he doesn't hold responsibility...

Said don’t blame him for the circus. Someone outside his circle leaked his desire to return and THEN his inner circle started to make comments on his behalf. As far as his “just a rumor” comment, probably made that just in case nothing panned out and he stayed retired. As for all these other comments he has made and his now making personal attacks on Thompson. Well, that is humanly simple to explain. He tried to retire on a “mature” note, even though he probably felt some betrayal from management. He’s had some time to stew on how things have played out over the years (one can really sense that from the Greta interview) and possibly felt pressured to give a retirement answer before he was ready. So, he is now speaking out. If he would have said all these things about Thompson earlier, people would have been like “WTH is this guy’s problem”. So, really it seems he is in a no win situation with the public.

understood

but how did someone outside his circle get information on his desire to return if only people inside his circle knew of his desire? I’ll buy the “just a rumor” reasoning but fail to see how mgmt betrayed him (prior to turning him down recently, that is). Brett needs to realize that he is the QB and not the GM. He is allowed (I would even say expected) to have input on personnel decisions but if the GM decides to go another way and it pays off, how can he claim he was betrayed? Last years team was not great solely because of Favre. TT’s construction of the team was pretty important, as was McCarthy’s coaching. Getting Randy Moss wouldn’t have made us a better team last year and would have slowed Jennings development. He wouldn’t have won us the NFC Championship game.

Bottom line is that Favre is concerned about doing what it takes to win while he is playing with no concern for the future while TT is concerned with what is in the best long-term interests of the team. I can’t blame Favre for thinking that, he is a player and that is what they think about: whats good for them. TT realizes that the Packers will continue to play games after Favre is retired and doesn’t want us to be pathetic for years to come simply to keep one player happy. If Brett is in a no win situation with the public it is one that he put himself in. And frankly, I think the Packers are the one’s in a no win situation.
