Brett has reserved the right to change his mind

Hi Packer fans. BBS here from Stampede Blue. I just spent much of last week in Wisconsin, the UP (Michigan), and Canada on a long camping trip. While there, I heard a lot about Brett Favre. I've never seen an area of the country so attached to an athlete. Coming from New York, which is where I divide my time with Indianapolis, I hear a lot of cynical, anti-Favre backlash. And if you ever hear me do SB Nation's podcast with TheSportsGuru, you know i'm in the pro-Favre camp while Guru is not lovin' the Brett Man.

Regarding this breaking story that Brett has an itch to play again, I guess we can all agree that Brett's timing, per usual, is bad. However, unlike most athletes, Brett has earned the right to change his mind, and this whole "public relations" problem is not any big deal. PR has a way of working itself out when you win.

It's real simple: If the Packers want to win right now, they'll allow Favre to return. Be honest with yourselves Pack fans: You're not winning a championship with Aaron Rodgers in 2008. It just isn't happening. Rodgers might be a good player, but to win titles in the modern NFL, you must have an elite QB. Not good. Not OK.

Elite.

Take a look at the teams that have won the Super Bowl the last few years: NY Giants (Eli Manning), Indianapolis Colts (Peyton Manning), Pittsburgh Steelers (Ben Roethlisberger), and New England Patriots (Tom Brady). All teams with elite QBs with reps for late-games heroics. Favre, obviously, is in the same category with all these guys. Rodgers isn't, and likely won't.

Brett Favre also has the kind of elite status that grants him the right to change his mind. If John Elway wanted to return in 1999 after retiring, Bronco fans would have welcomed him back. It's no different with Favre. This is not about "upsetting" Aaron Rodgers, who is likely already pissed becuase the Packers drafted Brian Brohm. In reality, it really doesn't matter how Aaron Rodgers "feels." This is about winning. Now.

So, for you Packers fans that are on the fenace about Brett coming back or not, it's ok to have him play again. If you want another title, Brett Favre must play. He's one of the greatest QBs of all time. If he wants to come back, he can.

Welcome BBS

I agree. The Packers are better with Favre. I have no doubt Rodgers will be good, but Favre is still better.

Elite?

Um, Eli Manning. Trent Dilfer. Brad Johnson. And again I must say, Eli Manning. Unstoppable is barely league average.

Yeah, Eli Manning is right up there with his bro and Brady

What are you smoking? Something you got in Canada?

Um yes

Did you watch the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl? Did you watch the Super Bowl period? You do realize he won Super Bowl MVP, right?

Eli Manning was elite during the Giants’ playoff run. He also played better than Brett Favre in the NFC Championship game. If you don’t see that, your’e blind. That simple.

Timmy Smith won a Super Bowl MVP once too. I believe within a couple years of that he was 350lbs and bagging groceries. Who else….

Larry Brown
Desmond Howard
Dexter Jackson
Deion Branch

These guys must be elite, as they also are all Super Bowl MVPs

maybe but the point remains that he outplayed Favre in the NFC Championship game in Lambeau

I totally agree with that

Not to mention the fact that we were totally outcoached. I am just saying it is ludicrous to put Eli up on a pedestal with his brother or Brady based on one 4 week stretch (which happened to be the playoffs).

I agree with you that Eli isn’t on that level yet. How were we outcoached though? Serious question, I’ve never really looked at it that way cause I never rewatched the game cause it hurt too much

Just 2 things that jump out to me
1. The defense didn’t adjust when it was painfully obvious that Al Harris was getting owned by Plax
2. 13 total rushes by the team for the whole game? Giving up on the running game in weather like that is unexcuseable in my opinion.

I agree completely on your first point. Burress was owning Harris and we did nothing to change that. I guess they figured that they stayed with the man to man strategy all year (except for the Dallas game when Woodson was out) and didn’t want to change it mid-game. Would have like to have seen them change it up.

Also agree on the second point. Hadn’t realized it was that bad. Like I said, I couldn’t bring myself to watch the game again. Maybe I will this weekend when its on NFL Network (if I feel like having a bummer of a Sunday)

Thanks for the info. Funny, I thought McCarthy had done a pretty good job of coaching all year so I just didn’t think of that.

I disagree about not being able to win a championship with Rodgers

In the Dallas game last year Rodgers showed everybody what his ceiling was. The rest of the Packers are good enough that they probably wont need an “A” game out of Rodgers every week. We have a borderline “elite” defense, an improving O-line and a good enough running game. Couple that with a very deep receiver corp and we stack up with anybody in the NFC.

And as the Giants proved last year, anything can happen once you get to the Super Bowl!

Aaron Rodgers

is not Eli Manning. If you think Eli Manning is “average” and just got lucky, then you have’nt watched much football.

Eli is no Peyton or Tom either.

23TDs/20INTs and a 56% completion rate for Eli is not elite by anyone’s standards. Get that to 25/15 and over 60% and do it for a couple years and I might call Eli elite. I do admit that Eli was extremely efficient during the playoffs. However, efficient doesn’t necessarily mean elite (see T. Dilfer, J. Garcia, R. Gannon, etc….). Hell, before last year there was talk about whether or not Eli would ever live up to his potential.

The only reason we are even talking about Eli in this thread is because Al Harris played his worst game as a Packer against Plaxico in the championship game. If Al Harris even had an average game, the Packers probably win the game and go to the Super Bowl.

P.S.

Eli has never had a QB rating higher than 77.0

You are 100% right about BRINGING FAVRE BACK!

If they let him to another team. They deserve to have the suckiest season ever!
Thompson is the absolute worst!
Get rid of Rodgers! Start Favre and prep Brohm…
Anything else is ridiculous!

Go start a Brett Favre SBNation site. All you’ve done is praise Favre and dump on everyone else.

It’s not all about Favre. Period.
