The Sky Is Falling in Vikingland!

KFAN's Morning show guys, PA and Dubay, lead off with a "Sky is Falling" montage of music, which pretty much sums up how things are over here in Vikingland.

Talk about suck. Before the season, there were plenty of Vikes fans who were sure they would easily win the division. Bretty Favre left, Adrian Peterson is one hellluva running back, the Vikes offensive and defensive lines are exceptional.... well, except that Bryant McKinnie is a complete boob who can't stay out of trouble and on the field.

The Vikes have assembled a pretty good team, but for two weak links - Brad Chidress and Tarvaris Jackson.

Jackson is proof of what a fool Childress is. Childress is too far into this experiment to give up on it. Either Jackson gets better, which means that Childress could find the magic cure for the terminal illness of inaccuracy, or they go to another quarterback to salvage the season. Squidqward... er... Childress is too damned stubborn to make that change while there's a season to save so by the time they make that move, both Childress and Jackson will have ordered everyone to the lifeboats only to discover that the other passengers have already taken them and gone.

It's too bad because Adrian Peterson is a joy to watch and Childress is going to use him up in a short time frame because that's the best weapon he has.

The Vikes are at 0-2. If in a couple more weeks they continue to fall, Minnesotans will begin wailing louder than they already are. They're too introverted to do much else, and they're too used to failure to

In Minnesota, the sky is falling. Too damned bad, ain't it?

Why Ryan Grant Isn't The Answer

It really is,

because Adrian Peterson is one of those special players whose career could be cut short by injury. He IS Minnesota’s offense, and when Childress starts using him more often (i.e. almost every single offensive snap), he’s going to wear down and be more at risk of getting hurt. And, despite my blind hatred of everything Minnesota, I don’t want that to happen, because I want to see Peterson reach his full potential.

Tavaris Jackson is at a crossroads this season: if he continues playing the way he has in the first two weeks, he’s never going to turn it around. If by week 8 or 9 he has put together a string of multiple successful games, then he might have a shot of turning himself into a decent starter. It’s his progression that will decide whether the Vikings sink or swim; AP can carry his team only so far. I put him on the same level as Barry Sanders individually, but the Vikings are at risk of missing the playoffs.

When Peterson can show that he can put up the numbers everyone thinks he can for 5-6 years in a row, then I’ll put him in Barry Sanders class, not until then. Peterson is great but he needs to prove he can stay healthy enough to put up those numbers

So far in his very short career

his career can be likened closer to what’s happening with Larry Johnson these days in Kansas City, than it does to Walter Payton, as Peter King compared him to in his MMQB column.
I want to see Adrian Peterson reach his full potential, just not in Minnesota.
Here is what pisses me off about football coverage: Nnamdi Asamougha may be the best corner back in football, and everyone acknowledges that he’s good, but nobody seems to think its an absolute crime that this guy not play on a contending team. What about Albert Haynesworth? The guy easily had one of the most dominating seasons ever for a defensive lineman, but there was gobs more talk about Adrian Peterson’s rookie year in Minnesota. Like we haven’t seen a rookie running back burst onto the scene, meanwhile Albert Haynesworth could have been the best player in football last year.
I understand the importance of the quarterback position, and while still overcovered by the media, I begrudgingly accept it. But I just can’t stand to see a running back get so much hype, because in terms of importance to the success of teams in the NFL, running back is way down the list.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Playcalling

The Vikes biggest issue is Brad Childress and Darrell Bevell’s playcalling. What they pulled Sunday against the Colts was a prevent offense. (i.e. it prevents you from winning) Daily Norseman has been on their asses this week.

Hopefully things will change

And by change, I mean a new coach and a new OC. I honestly think Jackson could do decently if he was actually given the chance to throw the ball.

And tell me, if you had talent like this on your team being squandered away, you’d be pissed too.

I don't think it's falling yet

But there are definite cracks.

Childress has to get the stick out of his backside and change his approach. Leaning on All Day more would be stupid. It obviously isn’t going to be enough to compete, much as I hate to admit it, and if he is even half as intelligent as an NFL coach should be, he won’t overuse him. But then again we are talking about Clueless.

The answer is to pass more. Other teams are going to stack the line if we can’t pass, which means we are going to have to pass. Give Tjack a chance to get in rhythm and prove he can do it. Get some screens going. Use some mid-range passes instead of dink-and-dunk with a couple bombs.

The key is getting Tjack in a rhythm before we’re losing. You tell him to hand off the whole game and then all the sudden, “Hey complete the bomb or we lose,” it’s not going to happen. He can’t do that. He needs to get in a rhythm.

Vikings are talented, but not Jackson

The Vikings have talent on defense and offense and it should be good enough to get into the playoffs. They’ve lost two games to two of the best teams, both better then Minnesota, so it is too early to close the book on their season. Still I’m not shedding any tears about that.

But I’ve read how statistically Jackson didn’t get it done last season, especially when you consider how dominant his running game was (and is). Watching him against the Packers, I can see he doesn’t have what it takes. He can throw when in the pocket and can find his number 1 receiver, but when he has to scan the field or throw on the run, he’s not nearly as accurate.

What I have been saying about Jackson in all the Vikings threads (as have others)

Is that he is better when he can pass more (there is a rather large and well-thought out post that goes into this at Daily Norseman, unfortunately I can not remember who wrote it). When Tjack is given the chance to get in a rhythm, he plays much better. So pass more, and Tjack will play better. Now whether Clueless will be smart enough to adjust his scheme and pass more, nobody knows. Unfortunately, it is looking doubtful. We’ll see next Sunday though.

Passing Game

The Vikings will go as far as their passing game takes them, which is joyous for me to say as a Packer fan, and brutally honest as a person.

I love AP, but you can’t just run him until he injures himself. The Vikings in that sense remind me of the ol’ beer commercials with Leon. “Leon can’t do everything.” Guess what, neither can Peterson.

I realize this

Which is why I always say we need to pass more, because just rushing won’t win most games AND Tjack does better when he is given the chance to pass often. Plus, passing more often would improve the rushing game. So Clueless better be planning to pass more. Because if his only solution is putting Gus in to hand off to All Day, I will hate him that much more.
