Open Thread: Dallas at Green Bay

Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers, Sep 21, 2008 7:15 PM CDT

Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers
Sunday, September 21st, 2008
7:15pm CST, NBC
This is an open thread for the game.

UPDATE: The Packers inactives from the Journal-Sentinel:

Packers inactives: QB Brian Brohm, S Atari Bigby, CB Pat Lee, FB Korey Hall, T Breno Giacomini, G Josh Sitton, WR Ruvell Martin, DE Jeremy Thompson.

Two starters out, Bigby's no surprise since his injury in the Detroit game, S Aaron Rouse starts instead. Hall was looking like he would make it back but now FB John Kuhn will start. Greg Bedard says starting C Scott Wells is active, but not starting. Jason Spitz is still at center instead of moving to guard, and RG Tony Moll remains in the starting right guard for another week. Obviously it's always better to have all your starters available, but the Packers have solid backups at these positions and it shouldn't be a problem.

I want to start this off by saying

that Brandon is unreasonable. An offer to get Willis McGahee, Larry Fitzgerald, and Derek Anderson for the wee price of Aaron Rodgers and Andre Johnson, and he turns it down!

I kid, of course. Stupid Browns, suddenly unable to play offense.

But now is the time to put fantasy football fanaticism aside and focus on the REAL game: Packers-Cowboys. Giddy-up.

Feeling confident

I’m feeling very calm. I’m looking forward to this. And I checked in my fantasy league, and as I expected, Ronnie Brown’s owner had him on the bench. I probably wouldn’t have started him if I owned him either.

Owens was matched up with Charles Woodson at the outset, but he’s going in motion to prevent any jamming at the LOS.

VERY lucky

that they gave up only a field goal. A bad start to the game, but it could have been worse.

Hopefully Ryan Grant channels his inner-Ryan-Grant-against-Seattle-in-the-playoffs-last-season and bounces back. Without the second fumble, of course.

The offense simply NEEDS to capitalize

There have been too many miscues (Rodgers’ first pass going low, Grant’s fumbles, the last snap of the 1st quarter), and they need to give the defense some time to regroup. Anything less than a score that takes time off the clock is unacceptable.

Thus far, one big 25 yard run by Barber and that’s it…romo has been held to 20 yards and the Pack D looks very FAST and athletic…I don’t the Cowboys receivers getting much separation….and you really see on special teams…marked difference from what I see in the dallas game v. philly

its okay, no offense taken.......

part of the reason the defense is playing better is the fact that the offense is finally pulling its own weight…….The Bills O in the 4th quarter today was amazing…….(after struggling all game) Trent Edwards is the real deal…….just like Rodgers is showing he is too……..Northern California knows how to breed good QB’s………….(Elway, Brady……etc) LOL

Good coverage

Just enough pressure, good pass coverage to stop the passing game. Great first half by the defense, except for the big run by Felix Jones.

I’m really disappointed the offense couldn’t take advantage of the weak Dallas safeties and go deep for a big play or two. The Dallas D is getting the better of them, which is a big surprise.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 8:47 PM CDT reply actions

Interesting half...

After starting out 6/7 for about 70 yards , ARodge is 2 for his last 6 for about 20something yards….it seems as if Dallas’s D is taking away that slant the started out so fruitful…

I think the Pack D has been VERY GAME…Dallas got the ball at midfield and deep in Pack territory and got 6 points total. Romo just 75 yards passing. But will the MASSIVE Dallas Oline impose their will in the 2nd half?…yikes, gonnna be scary/interesting

by PackFaninFL on Sep 21, 2008 8:49 PM CDT reply actions

so it's halftime

time to look at a few things

- Stop the run: Dallas has been able to dictate the pace of the game far too much with their running game. Barber has 80 yards on 15 carries, compared to Grant’s 35 yards on 8 carries. Dallas is in control, and it’s up to the offense to wrestle it back to our side.

- Outside containment: This game would be 6-6 were it not for a huge lapse in containment on Felix Jones’ long TD run. It didn’t help that Charlie Peprah got served as if Jones was a waiter on the play.

- Where’s the deep ball?: Brandon said it best: Dallas has some weak safeties, and they need to be attacked. Jennings has 80 yards, but half of them are YAC. This Dallas defense is flashy, but they’re not as fundamentally sound as they could be; take control of that lack of discipline!

- Woodson v. Owens: So far, Woodson has proven why he’s one of the top DB’s in the league. He’s held T.O. to 2 catches for 17 yards. Great effort, especially on a busted toe.

- Anybody got Witten?: This guy is going to kill us if we don’t neutralize him. If he’s being covered, he needs to be jammed at the line. Give him a release and he will find a hole in the zone or get separation on his man, he’s too good.

Hope the second half goes better than the first. It’s 13-6, we can do this!

"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."

by Mitchell Maurer on Sep 21, 2008 8:51 PM CDT reply actions

I think they’re staying away from the deep ball to keep the offense on the field and try to grind the defense out. GB’s defense has not looked solid and probably needs to conserve their energy; it seems to be unusually humid tonight.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 21, 2008 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Linebackers

The defensive line is leaving open holes, that’s ok and happens, but the linebackers are no where to be found. All of them are piling up tackles, but it’s often in pursuit and not at the line of scrimmage.

That said, Hawk just busted through the line and tackled Barber in the backfield. More please.

Coverage

Pacman got burned, but no one is open most of the time. It took Henry a long time to get to him. The play was busted long before the sack.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 9:14 PM CDT reply actions

Shootout

Someone let the Packers offense it’s a shootout. That TD drive looked easy.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 9:22 PM CDT reply actions

The GB offense looks like it brought a knife to a gunfight. It’s getting too late in the game to settle for anything or punt it away. If they don’t score a touchdown in the next two possessions, while holding Dallas to 0 points during that time, this game is dangerously close to gone.

the big pass play will do that. We need a score (meaning 7) and a stop

that was disgraceful

no way should dallas get the sack rushing so few players

i am officially disgusted with tonight’s showing.

Asleep

The defense gets schooled, then the offense. Let me know when the Packers wake up.

How is that not grounding?

He wasn’t out of the pocket and there were no receivers anywhere

I was wondering about that too

Really a terrible pass. Romo has a lot of Favre in him.

Fantastic...

15 minutes to overcome 11 points…it can be done!

Bills scored 17 in the 4th today......

the last 10 with 9 min to go…….it can be done!

Big Stop

They needed to turn that mo around.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 9:34 PM CDT reply actions

Great stop!

Now we need that offense. A good return wouldn’t hurt either

but ONLY if the offense can score! I hate being the broken record, but it just needs to happen

Blackmon

is being too cute with his returns. none of this dancing business, make a cut and get as far upfield as you can while protecting the ball. Don’t be Reggie Bush, be Will Blackmon!

Stupid Cowboys

Amazing how they always milk the refs. Asshats.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 21, 2008 9:37 PM CDT reply actions

BS!

Finley had his hand on the Cowboy’s helmet, he was trying to stop the Cowboys from ripping Blackmon’s head off, Finley gets punched in the chest, and Finley gets the flag. I saw that earlier today when a player Oakland (naturally) got ejected for a punch. Then a Dallas player does it and manages to pin it on a Packer.

hat's off to Dallas's D...

don’t think the Pack Oline is doing that bad…its just that Dallas’s D is play really well

by PackFaninFL on Sep 21, 2008 9:43 PM CDT reply actions

Outcoached too

Dallas is all over what the Packers are trying to do.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 9:45 PM CDT reply actions

False start

When Jason Witten moves before the snap, it’s never a false start. It’s in the rule book.

By the way, Tramon Williams is doing a great job. He’s been covering Owens at times too.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 9:47 PM CDT reply actions

yes on both counts

unfortunately we need a TO badly

Witten on 3rd down

Witten’s caught a pass on 3rd down for a 1st down at least three times. He’s only got 6 catches for 60 yards, but combined with his blocking, he’s killing the defense.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

Intentional grounding

Technically, but it was on Patrick Crayton for running the wrong route.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 9:52 PM CDT reply actions

Tramon Williams

I complement him. And he lets 10 NFL career reception Miles Austin torch him.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 9:53 PM CDT reply actions

Have to mention that missed holding call tho

Jenkins was absolutely tackled and no mention of it at all

okay let me be the first to mention this...

…if FAvre was QB, would the result be any different? doubt it…

by PackFaninFL on Sep 21, 2008 9:59 PM CDT reply actions

I'm not even joking

The pressure would have made him lob so many passes into those coverage packages. He did the same thing last season against Dallas.

by BearsNecessity on Sep 21, 2008 10:02 PM CDT up reply actions

True

He would have had at least two 2nd half INTs.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Dallas revamped their secondary...

…and it shows, much better than last year…more athletic…

by PackFaninFL on Sep 21, 2008 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

Rookie TE

Dallas’ rookie TE Bennett ran free for about 20 yards before anyone showed up. Embarrasing.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 10:06 PM CDT reply actions

Nice play by Blackmon

too little too late though…looks like pack win the turnover “battle” but still lose by 3 touchdowns…

by PackFaninFL on Sep 21, 2008 10:08 PM CDT reply actions

Blackmon

Great play. It’s special watching Madden rave about Barber as a closer, only to watch Barber sit out a chunk of the last drive and then fumble on this one.

by Brandon on Sep 21, 2008 10:08 PM CDT reply actions

Pack will be back...

…Pack not as bad as the score will indicate…this is a young team and it will continue to grow…I am still bullish about the future/this year.

by PackFaninFL on Sep 21, 2008 10:11 PM CDT reply actions

maybe we can do to the cowboys...

…what the Giants did to us last year!…we beat them early in the season and then they got us in the playoffs…hope springs eternal

It's Over

The stats have been padded, and it’s still a loss.
