Is Brian Brohm For Sale?

Hello Acme Packing Company, Primetime from Arrowhead Pride here.  We've been poking through the different possibilities regarding our abysmal quarterback situation.

Our Brady Quinn pipe dream is quickly being put to rest so we've focused our attention on another young QB we think might fit will with us: Brian Brohm.

I wanted to gage your thoughts on Brohm with a few questions.

  • Why is he 3rd on the depth chart?
  • Would Ted Thompson and Co. ever think about parting ways with him if the deal was right?
  • What is your biggest area of concern in the case of a trade and you wanted to pluck one of the Chiefs?

Here is a link to where we are hashing out a few possibilities.  Let us know what you think.  Are we crazy or does a deal like this make sense?

Its an interesting question..

I’m not sure if he is or isn’t. I remember after the draft, I and i’m assuming many others had Brohm as the for sure #2 and if Rodgers struggled maybe the replacement. Well the training camp and preseason came along, Brohm struggled, Flynn didn’t and now Flynn is the #2. I’d be willing to bet that Thompson would be willing to make a deal if it were right but Thompson has a lot of stock put into young players. In the NFL anymore I’m sure someone is available for the right deal or circumstance (we did trade Favre this summer (I know I know different situation but you get my point)).

I Did A Piece Hashing Out A Possible Trade For Brohm

Primetime linked to it in the post. I would be curious to hear your thoughts on it. Most fan-proposed trades aren’t particularly credible, of course, mainly because they operate from a bias that a) the players for their team are worth more than they really are (and we’re not pretending that Surtain or Huard are All-Pros, just decent stopgaps) and b) the other team’s GM is an idiot (which certainly isn’t the case with Thompson, who I thought did a really excellent job with handling the Favre situation).

Anyway if you’ve got any thoughts on it I’d like to hear them. Not like it’s going to make a difference because none of us are in charge of the Chiefs (or the Packers, I’m assuming), but it would make an interesting discussion.

My thoughts

Brohm struggled in just about every aspect of play this preseason. His passes weren’t sharp and he struggled reading defenses. He looked pretty lost out there. He kind of looked like Aaron Rodgers in his first preseason!

I don’t think Thompson will pull that move. He puts alot of value into youth and Surtain is on the wrong side of 30 for Thompson. The Packers have shown a tendency to depend on a pool of young players and expect one to step up into the roll. Tramon Williams has played well in limited time.

I don’t think Huard would be very attractive either. Thompson hasn’t show any interest in pulling in a vetaran back up.

Not such a bad thing
He kind of looked like Aaron Rodgers in his first preseason!

That didn’t turn out so bad now did it?

And re: Surtain’s age, I think the idea behind it is that the Pack is ready to win now and needs a viable replacement for Harris. Yeah, he’s not the future but he’s a good enough replacement for a playoff team.

Thompson Was Uninterested In A Veteran Backup

Because bringing one in would have mean that he would probably lose Matt Flynn or Brian Brohm if he got one via free agency, or because it would cost him too much in trade. Here he’d be getting a backup who can perform at a competent level (as long as he’s not constantly running for his life or playing for Herm Edwards) and he’d be trading up into the top five of the draft.

As for Surtain, yes he’s old and certainly not a long-term answer at CB. But he’s still able to be a decent starter this year (assuming his shoulder was merely bruised) which is what the Packers need if they’re competing for the Super Bowl this year…or he can add some quality depth if one of the young guys already there is ready to start.

Supporting the lesser of two evils is still supporting something evil.

Thompson has never shown any interest in trading up....

Ever. Seriously he constantly and consistently trades down. On that level I don’t think trading up will be all that attractive to him.

Thompson loves “his guys.”

There would have to be a defensive backfield meltdown (which I expected against the Cowboys withou Harris) for Thompson to give up on one of his QB picks so early.

Valid Point

Some GMs really don’t like to have those really high draft picks because of the amount of guaranteed money involved.

Thompson's MO

If I had to scout Thompson’s method as GM I would boil it down to this:

1)More Draft picks are better- In that sense I could see that trade work. He could take the higher pick and trade down for even more picks if there isn’t anyone he wants at that spot. I don’t think he is the type of GM who is going to be masterplanning that at his point though.

2)Low value on veteran grittiness – Almost like the Anti-Patriots. Thompson is going to stick wth a young guy, unless a veteran can provide a significant upgrade for a low price. The weird exception being the Woodson signing a couple years ago, but one could argue that the Packers have gotten alot of value out of that signing. He has his guys (Tramon Williams, Blackmon, Bush, Lee) backing up Harris and unless they fall apart, he is going to stick with them.

Never Say Never

GM Ted Thompson has traded a player for a draft choice, like Corey Williams to Cleveland for a 2nd round pick. But with Williams he was planning to pay him for one year at the franchise amount, then let him leave in free agency. A 2nd round pick for one year worth of Corey Williams was too tempting. What would the Chiefs offer for Brohm? Thompson’s been reluctant to sign veteran free agents who cost nothing in compensation. I can’t see him taking on any veteran for a year or two at the cost of controlling the next five years of Brohm’s career. If the Chiefs really want Brohm, it will cost more than a late 2nd round pick (Brohm’s slot) and someone the Packers can control for the next four or five years. That’s either a future 1st or 2nd round pick, or someone like CB Brandon Flowers. I can’t see that happening and I wouldn’t blame the Chiefs for passing on that deal. I’m not sure GM Ted Thompson would even want Flowers for Brohm.

If the Chiefs are looking to save their 2008 season, then Brohm isn’t the answer either. I was hoping he would be ready early since he was a starter for so long at Louisville, but he just isn’t. He looked good at times in the preseason, but he also had some cover-your-eyes moments. At best he would be Matt Ryan, and Ryan’s stats have been feast or famine so far this season. In a couple years, he could be Aaron Rodgers v.2.0, which would probably appeal to most Chiefs fans, but that doesn’t help Carl Peterson or Herm Edwards save their jobs.

If I were a Chiefs fan, I would worry that Peterson will make a desperate move to save the season, and his job. If he’s going to get fired, why not mortgage the franchise’s future on a Hail Mary trade? One of the most infamous save-your-job trades involved the Packers trade for veteran QB John Hadl. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, such a player might be available in QB Marc Bulger now that he’s been benched. He was a Pro Bowler in 2006! If Peterson comes offering a 1st and 2nd rounder, or maybe even two 1st round picks, how could the Rams turn that down? Bulger is a good QB, but the Chiefs need to rebuild and not go looking for Trent Green v.2.0.

They're not looking to save the 2008 season

I think everyone knows that its over. I would imagine deep inside Herm/Carl realize Croyle simply won’t work.

Brohm could set us up quite nicely for the future.

Doesn't have anything to do with anything

but I love your guys Chiefs blog. Maybe the best football blog on SBNation. This is precious. http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2008/8/26/601871/carl-comes-into-his-office

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Thanks, jobe

Chris, the leader writer over there, is out of town for a bit so I’ve been manning the ship. Glad you enjoyed it.

And thanks to the APC community for answering our questions!
