Open Thread: Minnesota at Green Bay
Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers, Sep 8, 2008 6:00 PM CDT
Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers
Monday, September 8th, 2008
6pm CST, ESPN
This is an open thread for the game.
UPDATE: He had been practicing the last few days, but in a mild surprise, LB A.J. Hawk is active and will start. Starting C Scott Wells isn't ready to return, even as a backup, and is inactive for the game. The inactives from greenbaypressgazette.com:
Center Scott Wells (lower back) is the most notable name on the Packers' inactive list. There was a chance he would be activated as a backup in spite of missing the entire week of practice, but rookie tackle Breno Giacomini will dress instead.
The other inactives are as I guessed earlier: CB Pat Lee, S Charlie Peprah, G Josh Sitton, TE Jermichael Finley, WR James Jones and DE Jeremy Thompson. Rookie Brian Brohm is the No. 3 quarterback.
Inactive for the Vikings are: S Madieu Williams, CB Marcus McCauley, RB Maurice Hicks, LB Erin Henderson, T Drew Radovich, FB Jeff Dugan and DT Letroy Guion. Rookie John David Booty is the No. 3 quarterback. Only Williams is a starter, though Hicks probably would return kickoffs if healthy.

like I said in the preview
the Vikings OL is getting too much push in the interior of GB’s D-line.
also, wtf is with clifton? i thought he never got penalties.

Kampman
Go Aaron!
Clifton doesn’t usually get penalties, hopefully not the start of a trend. I don’t mind the defensive line getting pushed back so long as they are keeping the running back in front of them and not getting shoved out of the play. Plus Birk and Hutchinson, last I heard, were pretty damn good.

that's a good point
AP hasn’t ripped off his patented 8 billion yard run yet

Only Two Drives
It would also help if they would stop fumbling the ball.
Most NFL fans have been sick of the Favre man crush the media has had on him for years. Now we’ve gotta get used to it too.

No Big Plays!
34 yard carry by Peterson. None of that! Just keep all their scoring drives to field goals.

Ryan Pickett looked awesome out there
What a difference maker. They are definitely attacking Al Harris today, he hasn’t looked bad, but he hasn’t looked great either. Chad Clifton is doing an okay job against Jared Allen, seeing as Aaron Rodgers isn’t dead. Three and out to start the second half would be just what we need.

and that is the game
and now for some final thoughts, as I need to get to bed so that I can wake up for my internship in the morning.
Aaron Rodgers certainly made his mark. I knew he was mobile, but he surprised me with his ability to get yards and first downs. I loved his Lambeau Leap, and his post-game interview was very classy. My new favorite player on the Green Bay offense.
The defense held pretty tough, but Tavaris Jackson was able to break containment too often. There’s not a lot that can be done about that, as most of the time his runs were a result of solid pass coverage and consistent pressure. Adrian Peterson only got one or two big time runs, so I consider that a positive.
Except Jennings’ big catch in the first half, the recieving corps did NOT impress me. This may be a minor problem or a major problem, but there are more pressing issues at hand…
Penalties. Stupid fucking goddamn penalties. Too sloppy, especially from the O-line. McCarthy and his staff have some work in front of them for next week. I cannot express in words how aggravated I am about the myriad of penalties. Maybe this will work:
a;ldkjfaepoiowu12098iodsijfa;sldufpajsadhgaskf;ljajfa;dlkfjas;dlfjaepoiaew;lakdsjf
That’s better.
That’s it for the game recap, but I have one observation for the season as a whole, and that is this:
Al Harris is starting to show his age. He is not as fast as he used to be, and if he was having trouble covering the Vikings recievers, how is he going to deal with a Calvin Johnson, a Reggie Wayne, or a Terrell Owens? It’s an underlying concern of mine.
Have a good night, all. And remember to give praise to the mighty Atari, whose joystick deserves much attention after the plays he made today.
Jump on that joystick!
-- "I do know that I plead the fizzif."
by Mitchell_M on Sep 8, 2008 9:29 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, they picked on Al Harris
But Atari, Barnett, Hawk, Pickett, even Jenkins and of course Kampman were really good tonight. You would think Mike Tirico hasn’t seen a Packers game the last two years: We always draw a ton of flags in coverage.
Man, it feels great to watch another game after your team just won. These opening monday doubleheaders kick ass.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Cool to see Aaron do the Lambeau leap and good to see the fans embrace him for Aaron to help bring them a victory.
What will be more interesting is how he and the fans will handle adversity.
