Green Bay's Offseason Plan

The majority of Mock Drafts scattered across the web show Green Bay taking Malcom Jenkins with the #9 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The talented Ohio State Cornerback is recognized as the best senior entering the draft this year. However, with minimal viewing time of the Packers dissapointing season one can realize that our corners were not the reason the team struggled.

An absence of any pressure on opposing quarterbacks, outside of Aaron Kampmans 9 1/2 sacks , left the Green Bay corners covering wide recievers for far longer than can be reasonably asked. Even with the elongated coverage time, the Packers managed to tie for third (with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers) in the league in Interceptions and returning those interceptions for a league leading six touchdowns. The team ended the year twelfth in passing yards allowed at just a shade above 200 yards per game (202.8).

Meanwhile the Packers struggled mightily against the run in every game excluding the first matchup against the Bears in Lambeau where they shutdown the Bears in a 37-3 blowout. Outside of that gem the Packers placed 26th in rush defense and and only two players with multiple sacks (Kampman and reserve defensive end Micheal Montgomery. A dissapointing season which was filled with injured starters but still must find a way to add a few playmakers on the defensive line via draft as it is very unlikely the conservative Ted Thompson will throw money at a big name such as Albert Haynesworth or Julius Peppers. So instead of drafting the standard "Best Player Available" it is time to draft a player of need which lies in the Defensive Line.

Agreed

There seems to be alot of DEs and DT worth a look in this years draft. but this time lets take the time and look at injuries and not just draft some one because he is good but then gets hurt everytime he stands up. but something needs to be done up front! yes next year with Jenks back will help alot! but him and Kamp still dont make up a 4 man line. the CB situation should not even be an issue. I think this year proved we still do have backup with T Williams if Harris or Woodson go down. That is a position we can attend to later in the draft.
Ted Thompson and Mike need to actually do some work look into the guys they need and want. This best player available is not working just look at the Lions who just have good WRs but nobody else.

Besides our D line I think we do need to address the O line too. Clifton was not very good this year! I know we have several guys that are back ups but they never seem to beable to set up when their times come. I think we need a new face in the mix for the job. Also with Tausch who knows what Ted will do with him being a FA and if he will be healthy by the start of the season.

agreed

yes Justin Harrel was a thoughtless pick and if he fails to stay healthy in the upcoming season he must be let go. with the seemingly impending loss of Tauscher i agree that if either Michael Oher from Ole Miss or Eugene Monroe from Virginia are available, they should be the first selection we make on April 25th. if neither of those two are available i suggest we take a page from Thompsons book and trade down to the mid teens and pick up a Defensive Lineman that can start right away.

If we go Oline agree

If we do decide to bulk the Oline first I think if available Monroe is the better option of the two. I think Oher can be taken if we trade down. Dependin on where we do end up in the draft (i think the mock says around 9?) maybe even Andre Smith of Bama may slip down to us!

If we want to add starting talent depth to the Dline i think Gerald McCoy from Oklahoma a DT just under 300 and about 6’4’’ so not bad sized.

Or if we trade down the DT BJ Raji from BC at 6’1’’ 334 he has one of the biggest frames at the DT pos in college and has some speed to carry that body. he can be a force in the middle but he has some problems stayin out of trouble at times. (punched a Central Mich player suspended one game)

For the DE spot and trading down we could look at a few different players Brian Orakpo from Texas he is just a bit small sitting at about 250lbs. but he has good speed. Other options would be Everette Brown from Florida State. but once again i believe he is alittle small for the NFL to make an impact right away. at 6’2’’ 250. The best guy I think is ready to step up and could help would be Tyson Jackson from LSU. at 6’4’’ 295 he could probably be used as both a DE and a DT he has decent speed for his size and is a good run stopper from the DE pos. but with his size and some speed I would use him in the middle and get a middle push that would help Kamp and Jenks.

Mccoy and Johnson

I really do like the skill set of Gerald McCoy and Micheal Johnson the Defensive End from Georgia Tech. That is if we dont get Haynesworth or Peppers in the Free Agency and if we dont get one of those two i believe that D-Line is a Higher priority than O-line. however if we do i agree that Monroe is the better prospect. i would love to see Smith fall to us but i do not see it happening. however, missing the Utah game did hurt his draft stock so it is possible

yes

But with Ted Thompsons past in not doing a damn ( just alittle frustrating) thing in the FA I doubt we go after Haynesworth or Peppers.Since his"Big Market FA" last season was Frank Walker! The Smith deal would be highly unlikely but would be nice! Todd McShay (on ESPN) perdicts the pack going for McCoy! which if nothing else works out with Smith would be good. But if McCoy goes early I would strongly consider trading down if the right offer is there.
