I found a place to send Hawk

Buffalo just lost TWO more linebackers, one was an OLB moved to starting LB and the other was the backup MLB, both were replacing the starting MLB (Poslusny) when they got hurt. Now they are down 3 LBs and we have one to spare. They are short handed at Safety right now due to injury but maybe we could get ourselves an olineman out of the deal?? They have Jamon Meridith as their #3 tackle though so maybe not!

Not sure what happened to him

Has he really been a bust for you guys or is it the system?

by PurpleJesus on Oct 12, 2009 6:09 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s had a (how shall I put this?) “interesting” career. He was pretty solid during his first couple of years but recently, last year in particular, he has been disappointing. He seems to be out of position a bunch and makes plays only when they are downfield. I think the biggest issue with Hawk is that he just doesn’t make many “impact” type of plays. By impact plays I’m talking like sacks, forced fumbles, picks, tackles for loss, etc. When you draft a LB with the #5 pick you are certainly hoping to see some impact plays coming out of him, and he just has never delivered those type of plays, even during his best years.

I’m not ready to give up on him completely, but I don’t think he’ll turn into the impact type of LB that I’d like to see. But that’s just my opinion. Some people think he’s doing ok and some think he should be shown the door right now.

great review

I have to admit, he is almost invisible to a fan of another team. When he came out I really thought he would be another Urlacher type. That was the reason I wondered if it was the system.

What about the great QB T - Jack?

How’d that turn out? Bust or the coaching?

Who said he was great?

Kind of like the situation we have.

Hawk

Has just been so up and down. He looked great his first 2 years in the league for the most part, and then his play appeared to decline a bit last year. He had to move to MLB for us last year when Barnett went down and he struggled. He lacks speed from sideline to sideline, and that also hurts his pass coverage (which he had to do a lot last year after Barnett went down.).

I think this system better suits his abilities. He is solid tackler, and a pretty sure one at that. The 3-4 is supposed to create opportunities for the 3-4 ILBs to come up and fill the gaps and make a tackle. He has looked pretty good so far this year, but has had his struggles as well. I was very impressed with against you guys last Monday though. He filled the gaps nicely and did a surprisely good job against Taylor in coverage.

I think how he plays the rest of this year will be a good indicator for what people can expect from him. I guess I wouldn’t say he is a bust, but so far he just hasn’t had the kind of impact you would want the 5th pick in the draft to have.

Got it

I didn’t really get a chance while watching the GB/Minn game to recognize (hear) when Hawk made a play. I was at a Hotel bar watching the game and the sound was impossible to hear. Because of that, I didn’t really know if ,or when, he may have done something good unless it stood out clearly. I did notice you played the run very well against us and I guess, like you say, a portion of that was attributable to Hawk.

Had you been listening to that game

You would’ve thought Brett Favre was the only guy for either team doing anything worthwhile.

Visually

He did play a great game and AD was almost invisible. He certainly wasn’t the only person who performed well as Jared Allen was an animal.

I kind of figured that

But a lot of others did play well. And heck, for Aaron Rodgers to get that many yards after taking that beating is incredible.

PJ

Thanks for not being a complete jag like a lot of Viking fans that come on message boards. You hold up an intelligent convo and can admit both the good and bad of both teams…its refreshing.

I live in MN and it gets so obnoxious when the Vikings start winning cause suddenly everyone is a “lifetime viking fan” even though they never talked about it before then.I know its probably no different elsewhere…but anyway, thanks.

A Vikings fan?!?! Intelligent conversation?!?!?!

How is that possible? We must turn this guy and get him on our side ;)

I think I muted it a couple of years ago

for that Broncos game too. And that was back when I loved Favre. They had Deanna in the booth for some reason and she was there like a whole quarter almost. I thought Kornheiser was gonna explode.

+1 on muting it for that game

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I liked the letter to Bill Simmons last Friday

From the Packer fan apologizing for the Favre-gushing all the years he was on Packers.

...

Hawk is only getting this much flak because he was drafted so high. He’s adjusting to the system, just like the rest of the defense. We will not see him leave. We’ll see him start performing better, and than all of you people who bailed on the guy will be fans again. Patience.

by StephanL on Oct 12, 2009 6:13 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

by the way...

I haven’t bailed on him. I still think he’s a decent LB, just not what we were hoping he’d be so far.

by TrevorR on Oct 13, 2009 9:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

He has not played like the fifth best player in his draft. That said, the word bust does not belong in the same sentence with Hawk. The guy moved to a new position last year and made more tackles than anyone else on the team behind a badly depleted line. Some people are upset he didn’t also get some sacks while he was at it. Maybe he should have played offense too. When your taken #5 walking on water is required by some.

I think they need to get him to lighten up. The fact that he won’t stay out of the weight room, even when the S&C coach orders him out, tells me he’s pushing too hard. I hope the new system will force him to take more chances and flow more.

He's got heart.

And that is why I’m so fond of him. I really appreciate players with heart.

Would be ok

With a trade but not with the Bills. They have nothing that we would be interested in. Their oline is almost as bad as ours.

I would GLADLY take Fred Jackson. That guy can play and they have Lynch back now.

True

I didn’t think about this. This really would be a damn good trade. Jackson is a great pass catcher and runner.

by packallday555 on Oct 16, 2009 4:16 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

interesting

the Packers do have a surplus of quality LBs, and if Hawk has plateaued, it might be worth it to upgrade at RB

"Brandon Jennings needs a nickname before he gives himself one. Oh wait, Young Money, he already did."

by Mitchell_M on Oct 16, 2009 11:09 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know right

If you really think about this it would be a great trade. I would they have Mitchell and Poslusnzy but both are hurt, and Mitchell is out for the year. Hawk could maybe help shore things up for them and Jackson could put of our offense over the top.

This move is probably unlikely though. But I really think TT needs to make a big move this offseason. We have some really good talent on both sides of the ball and I think bringing in an impact player or two could make a huge difference for us.
