Packers Crush The Lions: 26-0

After the Green Bay Packers win, I watched the Vikings dodge a 33-31 bullet against the Ravens. They barely pulled it out, but a win is still better than a loss any day.

As far as the Packers game, it wasn't much of a game. Despite a bunch of stupid penalties and poor offensive line play, the Lions did nothing on offense. And their pass defense and special teams were bad too. The Lions only had two legitimate scoring chances; one ended on a failed 4th down attempt and the other with an INT in the end zone. I'll have a full game review up this evening.

Another great open thread. Here's the Roll Call:

Very fine game today

Nice win Packers

The Lions were depleted in all areas

That said, the Packers held them to their fewest points on the year. Their next-closest to utter futility was on Sept. 20 vs. the Vikings (27-13 L).

Hyperbolic or not

It’s still true. The last time the Lions were shut out was 12/30/2001

I heard in today's telecast

That the last time the Packers shut out the Lions was 1946, and the last time it happened in Green Bay, it was 1941.

Could someone please verify it for me?

This kind of win is what the Packers needed

And my Fantasy team, thanks for the shutout + ints + sacks defense :)

With a favorable matchup next week, it’d be nice to go into “the game” with 2 solid wins under our belt. Of course, if “the other team” is on a 7 game winning streak, it’ll still be a tough game.

by Danwood on Oct 18, 2009 4:00 PM CDT reply actions

Upon further review

The more I stewed about this game, the more it bothered me. Namely:

1. The yellow on green, and I’m not talking about the Packer’s jerseys or the fans. 130 yards of penalties is downright embarrassing.
2. The sack situation has not improved. One play that stuck in my mind, where they blitzed the A-Gaps, and Rodgers was taken down almost as soon as he got the snap.
3. As alluded to by other posts, Red Zone offense.

A healthy Lions team would’ve made this game much closer, if not a loss. On paper it looked like a domination, but in reality I don’t think we can say that things are really improved.

On the bright side, the kicking game was at least solid today. Nice to see Crosby go 1.000 in a game with a lot of opportunities.

by Danwood on Oct 18, 2009 9:25 PM CDT up reply actions

errr...

your three points were on…but I am sorry the Lions were missing ONE player that resulted in their offense sputtering. Duante isn’t a dropoff to Stafford. In fact he outplayed him in the preseason but they went with the rookie. So the Lions plus Calvin might equal some more yards and maybe a TD but lets not fool ourselves here. You take away a few penalties and this game is a MONSTER blowout. You can play that game both ways.

The Packers still have a lot of way to go but this was a nice win…a sloppy one, but they won and they still dominated despite the sloppiness. Imagine if they cleaned up those penalties!

by TrevorR on Oct 19, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

Culpepper is NO difference from Stafford. They both have strong arms, are mobile, and have trouble reading coverages. Of course not having CJ makes a difference but he really hasn’t done a whole this year.

Just keep in mind the Lions were without CJ for 75% of the game against the Steelers and had Daunte in there the whole game, and really had a chance to beat them. The fact that we completely shut down their offense is impressive. We allowed only 149 total yards to the Lions, while the Steelers allowed 335 total yards to the Lions (and CJ had 2 of those).

Were we as efficient on offense as we would like to be? No, of course not but we still got it done. Against the Vikes we got into their territory 6 times and only got points 3 times. Yesterday we scored on 5 of our 6 possessions in their territory, and had Clifton even touched his guy we likely would have scored a TD instead of being sacked and losing a fumble.

There are were negative spots, but there were positive ones as well. We improved on defense a considerable amount with Bigby’s return, which had been a big problem for us. Lang also looked very good again Sunday when filling in, and who knows maybe he will show that he is going to be a very good player in this league in his time filling in for Clifton.

by packallday555 on Oct 19, 2009 5:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe so

I still think two 100% healthy teams in yesterday’s game would’ve made the score closer. Plus a few different offensive calls (no fake punt, plow up the middle instead of bouncing it out on 4th and 1, etc.). Keep in mind that the Lions had not been shut out in 8 years or so (2001, right?); even with their awful season last year they managed to put points on the board. They played Minny well in the first half of their second game, too.

by Danwood on Oct 19, 2009 6:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Oh of course

The game would have been closer with the Lions healthy. The point I was trying to prove was that the Lions have played very well on offense without Stafford and CJ.

by packallday555 on Oct 19, 2009 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

bah...

The Packers have injuries too…do we get Blackmon back then? Does that mean all our Olineman are healthy? What about Raji is he up to full health then? I guess that would bump up Bigby a little in the health category too then. Our injury report was as long as theirs was and it had some important players on it too!

Here it is…
http://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2009/10/16/1088590/friday-injury-report-lions-at

People get hurt in the league. You have 53 players to fill those spots. Lets not make this into more than it is. It was a win…a sloppy one. One we can improve from but lets not go crazy here.

by TrevorR on Oct 20, 2009 11:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I said two 100% healthy teams

So yes, I did factor in a 100% health Packers team into that equation.

by Danwood on Oct 20, 2009 12:13 PM CDT up reply actions

doesn’t that also maybe speak to a good defensive gameplan though? Sure they were missing a guy or two, but their offense didn’t do ANYTHING with almost the same guys on the field that they had the week before against Pitt.

This game if you take away a few lame penalties probably could have been a really huge blowout too but I do see your point. I doubt we’d shut them out again if we played another game but you never know.

by TrevorR on Oct 20, 2009 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Q and Hawk

said it in the other post, but looks like we run really well with Quinn Johnson in.

now, the negative is that Hawk had ZERO tackles today.

I have said it all season, AK-Barnett-Bishop/Chillar-Matthews is our best lineup.

I liked how they dropped AK as a linemen. He got after the QB.

our penalties are stupid. We have been near the top in the league for penalties against I think every year MM has coached. Yes, we are young, but still. It will and has cost us games.

I thought Matthews really flashed today.

I know it’s just the Lions and Culpepper/Stanton were essentially statues back there, but it’s about time. I was starting to wonder if his injury problems would linger all season.

Personally, I don't give a crap about Brett Favre.

My keys to the Defense today

A. Atatri’s return
B. Kampman as a lineman
C. Clay Matthews-we need to start him, he’s ready and he’s a playmaker
D. The continued strength of the run defense

much more aggressive with Bigby, I like him, but am surprised he is that important where we change our ENTIRE approach if he is on the field or not.

Matthews does start I believe. If not, doesn’t matter, he plays most of the games now.

The Journal Sentinal came out with an article

It wasn’t known until gametime, but I guess Clay Matthews did indeed make his first NFL start yesterday. He played almost all of the snaps on defense. Brady Poppinga was mainly utilized as a special teamer, and that’s apparently going to be the setup for the foreseeable future. This is a good thing.

Who would have thought...

That Bigby would be THAT important to the D. Its like a completely different team out there when he’s healthy. I hope he can stay healthy from here out !!

redzone offence

Win is a win as the VIKINGS would say. I think this is a trend, just about every time GREEN BAY gets inside the 30 RODGERS gets sacked costing us points or field position. 25 sacks in 5 games even loley DETROIT got 5 and they only had 10 to this point. Thats not going to cut it against better teams down the road, say PITTSBURGH and VIKINGS.

horrible

they did throw more quick passes today.

did YAC go up today?

by Acme on Oct 18, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

This is why I'm glad our performance today came against the Lions.

A win is a win, but if we play like we did today, some teams would beat us. I’m glad it was the Lions, and I really do hope the momentum continues after this win. Especially after The Traitor and the biased officiating in that game.

This being said, there were some really nice things in this game, too. Driver’s one-handed catch, James Jones’ catch-and-run that led to a score.

Keep it going!

Lastly, do you remember what happened the last time the Vikings started 6-0? I seem to remember an epic collapse, completed when they imploded in the desert against Arizona.

Here's the question:

Who should we be routing for tonight between Atlanta and Chicago? It’s not as obvious as you think. It’s looking less and less likely the Vikings are coming back to the Pack in the division race therefore making the Bears just another team competing with us for the Wild Card.
I’ll still be routing for Atlanta, but a Chicago loss is not as vital as I would’ve thought.

We are in Trouble

Wow-

Exactly what was worked on during the bye week…oh yea.. NOTHING. …they had the week off and looked like it against a Lion team without key starters on offense and defense.

Yea a win…… but against a Lion team with it’s starters participating, the game is way different…against a quality team we get our asses handed to us…

All the penalites…no progress there….rushing the ball …..failed at that too and protecting the quarterback …sucked there as well…

“Self scout” & “we’ll get it cleaned up” is code for we suck and have no clue on how to get it turned around even with an extra week to address our internal issues…

If this were a privately held team ownership would be pressuring for a better result from coaches and players, given this teams obvious talent level, but as a publically owned operation Packer fans are just asked to pay for ticketts, jeseys, food & beverage and deal with a team that lacks fire, discipline and common sense.

We’ll be exceedlngly fortunate to win 8 games this season.

Against a quality foe We are in TROUBLE…

by 1rarebird on Oct 18, 2009 9:19 PM CDT reply actions

Well, they changed how they're using Kampman fairly dramatically...

… Matthews got more playing time, Hawk got less (and did almost nothing with the time he got), and it looks like Rodgers was persuaded to check down more frequently.

Other than that, you’ve got a pretty good handle on it. But I don’t think we’ll have to be lucky to win 8 games. In fact, 8-9 wins is probably about right. 10 wins and a playoff berth with a little luck. We’ve still got games against Detroit, Cleveland and Tampa, who’ve combined for, what, 2 wins so far? They’re all on the road, so we’ll probably lose 1 of those games, which puts us at 5 wins. We’ve got the Vikes, Boys, Niners, Ravens and Seahawks at home. I like our chances to win 3 of those, which gets you to 8 wins. The remaining road games are at the Bears, Steelers and Cards and I don’t see any reason they don’t win at least 1 of those games, which gets us to 9. With a little luck, they sweep the three road games against weaker competition and sneak off with 2 wins in the roadies to Chicago, Pttsburgh and Arizona, which could get them to 11 wins.

It’s a deeply flawed team, so we’re probably looking at 8 or 9 wins total, but I don’t think there’s much chance (barring a string of crippling injuries) of worse than an 8-8 record. Not that that isn’t disappointing enough.

Personally, I don't give a crap about Brett Favre.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Oct 18, 2009 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, this schedule is looking easier than I thought it was going to be

I didn’t think Dallas would be a contender but that game at Lambeau against the Cowboys looks alot less daunting right now. The Steelers, even at 4-2, look to be in a post Super Bowl haze. And we were very fortunate to get the Rams, Browns, Buccaneers, and Lions x2. So with all that said…..

……let’s all assume the following:
1. The Giants win the NFC East.
2. The Vikings win the NFC North
3. The Saints win the NFC South
4. The NFC west is a one bid division with either the Niner’s or Cardinal’s getting in with eight or nine wins.
That leaves us contending for the Wild Card with Dallas, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Atlanta.
Each team is deeply flawed but how do you rank them. I say,
1. Atlanta 2. Philadelphia 3. Green Bay 4. Chicago 5. Dallas

So right now, I have us finishing out of the playoffs, with about nine wins.
Thoughts?

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

If we only win nine with such a weak schedule

We really should miss the post-season. If we cannot get a tenth win when five of our wins likely will come versus the Rams, Browns, Bucs, and Lions, then we certainly have no complaints as we sit home watching the playoffs.

by NYCPac on Oct 18, 2009 11:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Probably good predictions

I agree we’ll likely need to get the a wildcard and I think there is a good possibilty we could do so. To me Atlanta is the team we’ll be competing with. They have the Saints 2x and then the Giants which I think will all be losses for them. Then they have Dallas, Philly, NYJ which are games that they could possibly lose. I say they finish 10-6 or 9-7. I think we’ll also finish 10-6 or 9-7. I would like to think we’ll win at home against the Browns, Bucs, Cowboys, and 49ers, and then our game at Detroit but who knows. I would like to think we can win at least 4 of those, and would also like to think out of @Pitt, Ravens, Vikes, @Cardinals, Seahawks, and @Bears we could win at least 2 but again who knows.

It should be interesting. I think if we win 10 games we have a great shot at making the playoffs, and if we win 11 we’ll for sure be there.

December 15th, 1991

The coach was Lindy Infante. The QB was Mike Tomczak. That date was the last time that Green Bay lost to the Lions in a home game, whether in Milwaukee or Lambeau. In the nineteen home games since, the combined score has been 525-262. For those who are curious, here is a list of all of the games, as provided on the Packer’s official site:

1992-12-06 Detroit Lions Win 38 10 Home (Milw) 49,469 Mike Holmgren Brett Favre
1993-11-21 Detroit Lions Win 26 17 Home (Milw) 55,119 Mike Holmgren Brett Favre
