Friday Injury Report: Green Bay Packers at Browns
The big news is the massive injury report from the Cleveland Browns. 24 players are listed on it, mostly due to the swine flu outbreak in their locker room. Although CB Eric Wright is listed on it because of his serious car crash. The good news is that only 2 players are listed as doubtful (TE Steve Heiden and K Phil Dawson), so they should have nearly everyone available.
While the injury list is shorter than it was last week, the Packers are certainly going to miss some players. From Packers.com:
| Player | Pos. | Injury | Friday Participation | Friday Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brandon Chillar | LB | Neck | Limited Participation | Questionable |
| Chad Clifton | T | Ankle | Did Not Participate | Doubtful |
| Korey Hall | FB | Calf | Out | Out |
| Greg Jennings | WR | Hip | Limited Participation | Probable |
| Quinn Johnson | FB | Ankle | Full Participation | Probable |
| Jordy Nelson | WR | Knee | Out | Out |
| B.J. Raji | NT | Ankle | Full Participation | Probable |
| Aaron Rodgers | QB | Foot | Full Participation | Probable |
| Jason Spitz | C/G | Back | Did Not Participate | Doubtful |
| Mark Tauscher | T | Knee | Limited Participation | Out |
| Jarius Wynn | DE | Hamstring | Did Not Participate | Out |
Some big names are listed, Rodgers especially. But he should play, along with Chillar, Jennings, Johnson, and Raji.
Clifton's loss is no surprise because it looked bad when he reinjured his ankle last week. Rookie 4th round pick LT T.J. Lang will start in his place. I don't expect he'll be great, but LG Daryn Colledge was so bad in Minnesota, and even Clifton struggled with penalties last week, that he might not seem so bad. But we should expect the rookie to have some struggles.
Hall has been out for a couple weeks, but Nelson was hurt last game when he took a shot to the knee. He's having a slightly better season than WR James Jones (Nelson has caught 58% of the passes thrown his way, while Jones only has caught 42%) but for almost the same yardage and 1 TD apiece. Jones has looked lost at times, but neither has been used much this season. CB Tramon Williams will replace Nelson on special teams as the return man.
Spitz has a bad back, and he's day-to-day. C Scott Wells will replace him, start at center for the 4th game in a row, and he's probably just as good.
I'm not sure what's up with Wynn, but the rookie has barely played this season so he shouldn't be missed. Tauscher is out again as the recently resigned veteran is still rehabbing from his ACL surgery. I'm surprised RB Ahman Green is not listed, apparently he's not hurt but still in questionable football shape. The Packers have never had more than 2 RBs active for a game this season, so Green should be inactive with RB Brandon Jackson as the backup to RB Ryan Grant.

a beast in 2003, hopefully he can return to half that form

tough to see the injuries
That’s how a season goes, I guess.
I like Ahman Green and the memories. He is like the RB version of Brett Favre. Obviously, he will not make the HOF. Yet he had fumbling problems. I used to think that he could make a huge play or fumble the ball. You never knew with him. It was exciting to watch. Not exactly something someone would want to be remembered for, I’m sure. Yet there was more good than bad.
I hope he performs well too. Yet his signing sounds a little desperate to me. That is not just in terms of getting a player on the field. Does GB want to appease a fan base that is growing more intolerant of the organization’s decisions (past and present)?
Whatever the reason, I’m off the topic. I hope the “swine” flu passes before the Packers play against them. It’s a nasty virus. I had it and it sucks. It would be terrible if the GB players started coming down with it. Apparently, one is no longer contagious when they no longer have a fever (99 degrees or lower for 24 hours w/o the use of medication). I had a fever for 6 days. It ranged from 100 to almost 104. H1N1 is a very nasty little bug. Maybe it hit me harder than others because I haven’t had a flu since I was a child. Whatever the case, we wouldn’t want the Packers coming down with it considering the big game next week. It will tough enough. I doubt the Packers will win even at full strength, so they need all their weapons to have any kind of chance. The Vikings injury report is starting to build. That might help the Packers too. But that’s next week. The Browns are this week and we should win easily. I haven’t seen a team this bad in a while.
The Packers BETTER win. I really hope to see fewer sacks too. At least one of these bad teams should give Rodgers some time. Please?

Couldn't help but wonder
Last year, when Ahman signed with the Texans, many Packer fans were all over Ted Thompson for allowing him to leave, when the stark truth was that Green, while still relatively good, was not worth the kind of money that it would have taken to keep him.
Now, with the hindsight that follows the injury plagued season that he had last year, I wonder how many people who think that this veterans’ minimum signing is a desparation move were among those who blasted Ted for not paying Green so much more last year.

Not to pick nits...
But Ahman left after ’06, not last season.

Yeah; my bad
Not sure what I was thinking when I wrote last year.
However, my point remains.

good point
I was sad to see him go. He was not on the level of Brett Favre with respect to the organization and fans. I do not think any player in NFL history was quite as important to their team as Favre was to the Packers, for many reasons. Of course Favre was a winner on the field. Yet he also was important for financial reasons. Wherever Favre goes, he sells. No other player has quite the impact that Brett Favre does. Ahman Green, on the other hand, was a top notch RB in his prime. He had his faults. Those of us who watched football on a regular basis know that. Seeing him go was disheartening, but as long as Favre was still around everything felt okay. I questioned a lot of TT’s moves. Perhaps I should have been more vocal about them at the time. I know TT likes to keep the Packers WAY under the cap. I don’t know why, he just likes to have a lot of room to sign tons of low round draft picks he amasses in the off-season. Obviously, they don’t require much of that cap money. Besides, it looks like next year will be uncapped anyway. With all those picks, one might think he could find ONE quality lineman. Just one? No…
Go away, Ted Thompson. We want to see some winning in Green Bay again.

The Swine Flu isn't just in Cleveland.
I’m a health care worker, we’ve had Swine Flu widespread in Vermont as well.
And Friday night, I may have been exposed to it.
I wish all the Cleveland Browns who have it a speedy recovery.

On the bright side
No need for a vaccination for you, right? ;)

I'd prefer getting the vaccine.
The only other time I’ve had the flu, I wound up having a fever for nearly four weeks because I developed complications in the form of a severe bronchitis infection.

I second that
Thanks for putting that into perspective. These players are still human beings. I wish anyone who is ill a speedy recovery.
