Ask a Vikings Fan

Hey Packer fans. We are a little under 5 hours away from as FOX billed "The Game Of the Year". This could quite possibly be the greatest game ever played between the Packers and the Vikings. Lets hope for a great game between both teams.

I would like to just come over here and throw it out there that you guys can ask me any questions about the Vikings so far if you have any. So ask away.

what is winfield and berrian’s status for sunday?

by BenSheets15 on Oct 28, 2009 4:11 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Injuries

Winfield: Contrair to what the reports are about him being out for 4-6 weeks. He said hes D-2-D. For Sunday though, I doubt he will play, even if he does play, he wont be at full strentgh. So itd be a perfect time for Rodgers to get the ball to Jennings. :(

Berrian: The Hammies are looking ok. I would be surprised if he doesnt play. He wont play much but he prolly will play.

When Im in a jam......... I ask myself "WWPD?" (What Would Porcello Do)

by Percy Harvin My Fav! on Oct 28, 2009 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Berrian hasn’t been much of a factor this year…if he is playing with bad hammies, he’ll be slower which takes away his best weapon, speed.

Winfield is always going to say what he can to get out there…he’s a fighter and he wants to play. The truth is that there is NO way he plays. Sorry Vikes but your team would be IDIOTS to rush him out there and risk injury when you have a bye on the other side of the game. This is strictly a gamesmanship move.

by TrevorR on Oct 28, 2009 11:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed.

Winfield should sit until after the bye at the very least.

Berrian has more than just speed, he is one agile SOB. Too bad that depends on his hammy as well.

by Bjorno on Oct 31, 2009 1:15 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is Harvin banged up at all?

He didn’t really look it from the plays I saw against Pittsburgh, but I know he had a shoulder problem a week ago and he took a big hit against the Steelers.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

He always is! If its not a sickness, its an injury. I don’t think he’s been healthy this year yet but he’s still a playmaker.

By the way, I live in MN and listen to KFAN all the time…I know the Vikes almost as well as I know the Packers! haha

I KNOW!

I turn his show off. I can’t listen to his drivel…he has NO perspective. He can’t say anything negative…Common Fan balances him out nicely though haha

by TrevorR on Oct 29, 2009 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is "Common" still on the air there?

I lived in Mpls. in the late 90’s and listened daily to Dan Cole and Barreiro in the afternoon. That wasn’t just great sports radio, it was great radio period. Those guys were the first real IRL Trolls I was ever exposed to. For instance, it was a total hoot listening to them spread “rube-ella” at the opening of each hunting season by announcing that the state DNR had called off gun season and were rescinding all issued hunting licenses. Needless to say, hilarity ensued every year as callers promptly took the bait and completely lost it.

But yea, even back then, when PA was just starting (paired up with a guy named Dubay, if I remember correctly), he was pretty insufferable. He can be funny at times and he’s definitely a talented broadcaster, but then so is Glenn Beck.

You do have to give credit to PA’s call on the Favre TD pass at the end of the 49ers game – that was a great freaking call.

by 400metres on Oct 29, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Haha god yes he is

He’s always coming up with ridiculous theories and ideas, which really have no shot at being true. Now he has Mark Rosen (he’s a sports anchor for Channel 5 news, if you don’t live in MN) on the show with him, and he is much more realistic, so that tones things down a bit. But it can still get ridiculous. After our week 4 game against the Vikes the “Common Man” speculated that Favre would come back and play for Green Bay after winning the SB with the Vikes this year.

by packallday555 on Oct 29, 2009 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Common and Barreiro are the most cynical geniuses ever

And they like nothing more than to get the rubes riled up. For that reason, they’ll always have a place in my heart.

Oh, and of course I remember “Rosie” from when he used to occasionally sit in at KFAN back when I was a resident of the TC. I really can’t imagine Common with a sidekick, particularly one as drably earnest as Rosen.

by 400metres on Oct 29, 2009 3:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rosie is a joke. He’s not a real side kick for Common, just an occasional guest. He’s on the morning show all the time too. Personally I don’t think he brings anything to the table except for someone that they make fun of.

by TrevorR on Oct 30, 2009 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Really?

I actually like Rosie. I think it’s good to have him on with Common because the things he says are so out there, and his real sidekick “Tanna B” (or whatever his name is haha) agrees with all the ludicrous things he says. So having someone on there who is more realistic kind of evens out all the ridiclous theories said.

by packallday555 on Oct 30, 2009 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dubay was still with PA until earlier this year when he was rang up by the local police for Cocaine possession. Needless to say he went bye bye from the station. PA runs the show himself now and its almost impossible to listen to. He has no one to balance him out. I think PA is right up there with the best as an announcers on the air but when it comes to his show he can’t make an unbiased opinion to save his life. The other day he said, “I’m not the least bit scared of facing off against New Orleans in the playoffs…we beat them last year” that was the last straw, I haven’t listened to his show since.

Common and Barreiro are still going strong. Those are my two favorite shows, I love how they bait people and how they actually are able to be objective in their opinions. The morning show could be GREAT if they dumped “The Superstar”. Corey Cove NEEDS his own show, the kid has it. Mike Morris though only has something relevent to say when he is just recapping what the others said, he sucks. He’s worse that PA! haha

by TrevorR on Oct 29, 2009 12:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What’s funny is that when PA and Dubay did their show it was basically something I had to endure between the brilliant Bob Yates in the morning (anyone remember that guy?) and the Common Man show in the early afternoon, chiefly because Dubay was a far too earnest local sports geek/homer that didn’t really fit in with the rest of the station’s lineup at the time.

Yea, when Yates was sacked and they replaced him with typical meathead sports radio-jocks (i.e., Mike Morris), the good guys lost.

You know, radio overall used to be amazing until the polis deregulated ownership restrictions in the 1990’s (thanks Bill!). When I moved to the TC in 1994, the local radio diversity was amazing and so supportive of the local music scene. By the time I split in 2000, the radios were all so thoroughly Clear Channeled that the only thing I listened to was KFAN. I assume nothing’s changed in that regard.

by 400metres on Oct 29, 2009 3:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ah, well

That Rev 105 station that existed for about 3 or 4 years right around when I moved there blew my mind. Plus Cities97 was really supportive of local stuff back then. They would even put out a cd every year of the best local music. Coming from the staid Fox Valley area, the music and broadcast scene in Mpls. really exhilarated me. Tell me that at least Radio K is still on the air?

by 400metres on Oct 29, 2009 4:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, Radio K is still here, I forgot about that since I usually just bypass the radio altogether.

Cities 97 is pretty bad now in my opinion, not a whole lot of local stuff on there and they play a lot of the same generic music you’d hear on every other station. They still put out a CD every year but it’s usually filled with mostly crap, for instance this years has Jason Mraz, The Fray and Rob Thomas.

by Charlie Kelly on Oct 29, 2009 4:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

you’ve pretty much summed up exactly went wrong over the last 15 years in radio. I don’t blame you for a second for not even bothering with the medium.

Cities 97 played a lot of junk (to my ears) back in the day too; but it was cool how connected they were to the local scene nevertheless.

Music is as diverse and exciting right now as it has ever been, but you’d never know that from listening to 99% of the radio anywhere in this country. It’s sad what corporatizing radio ownership has done to sap the vitality of a really important outlet for music and opinion.

And speaking of shit like Rob Thomas, I’ve always thought this Onion piece best summed up modern radio programming to a T.

by 400metres on Oct 29, 2009 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is why I switched to sports talk now. The music was crap and on top of that, all the stations had stupid morning shows anyway so if I am going to listen to someone yammer I might as well listen to something I like to hear about!!

Haha

Yes it’s pretty difficult to listen too, though he isn’t nearly as bad. The “Common Man” is so much worse then him.

I like Paul Allen

But then again, I like it when the announcers get worked up over a game. As opposed to “Mr. Monotone” Joe Buck who would make the Hindenburg Explosion sound like a CSPAN commentary.

On a similar side note, the only way I can watch soccer is if I’m watching it on telemundo or some other foreign channel. The announcers over there go nuts, while the American announcers sound bored.

When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.

Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

I am not referring to him as an announcer…he’s GREAT as an announcer. His radio show though is complete garbage homerism with no objectiveness or realness at all.

by TrevorR on Oct 29, 2009 12:42 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like a little excitement as well, but at appropriate moments.

But Allen gets way too worked up for my tastes, it’s just obnoxious. Also, I’ve never listened to his show mainly because I hate talk radio and only listen to it if I’m being forced to by a coworker, but if it’s as obnoxious and over the top as his announcing is, I’ll pass.

by Charlie Kelly on Oct 29, 2009 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

His show is far worse than his announcing. I don’t mind his announcing…the show is almost unlistenable though.

Your are honestly

so right about that. His show is horrendous but I actually love his announcing. Did you know he has his own Bud/Miller Lite commercial? "The Game Of the Yeat"?

Or maybe the Game of the Yeats?

HE WISHES HIS BELOVED WERE DEAD

by: William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)

ERE you but lying cold and dead,
And lights were paling out of the West,
You would come hither, and bend your head,
And I would lay my head on your breast;
And you would murmur tender words,
Forgiving me, because you were dead:
Nor would you rise and hasten away,
Though you have the will of wild birds,
But know your hair was bound and wound
About the stars and moon and sun:
O would, beloved, that you lay
Under the dock-leaves in the ground,
While lights were paling one by one.

Moar Yeats

THE OLD MEN ADMIRING THEMSELVES IN THE WATER

I HEARD the old, old men say,
‘Everything alters,
And one by one we drop away.’
They had hands like claws, and their knees
Were twisted like the old thorn-trees
By the waters.
‘All that’s beautiful drifts away
Like the waters.’

THE UNAPPEASABLE HOST

THE Danaan children laugh, in cradles of wrought gold,
And clap their hands together, and half close their eyes,
For they will ride the North when the ger-eagle flies,
With heavy whitening wings, and a heart fallen cold:
I kiss my wailing child and press it to my breast,
And hear the narrow graves calling my child and me.
Desolate winds that cry over the wandering sea;
Desolate winds that hover in the flaming West;
Desolate winds that beat the doors of Heaven, and beat
The doors of Hell and blow there many a whimpering ghost;
O heart the winds have shaken, the unappeasable host
Is comelier than candles at Mother Mary’s feet.

You need some Dylan Thomas (the most appropriate poem I know for this week).

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a GREEN BAY,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

(Yes, that’s the actual lyric, but I added the caps.)

Right

It doesn’t even matter all that much that he has slowed down (and he clearly has) because he is a 340 lb. body that just clogs up the middle. He does get pushed back on some blocks now from time to time though which is so strange to see.

My suspicion on that is...

that opposing teams are probably always keeping track of where AD is, so the likelihood of someone smelling out the screen are increased. Chester has had some good gains on screens this year and he seems to have a good sense for how to exploit them, besides being a generally reliable receiver.

by Migrant lurker on Oct 29, 2009 9:57 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That is most likely the reason right there.

Watch the replay of the Favre to Lewis TD and you will see AP take 3 defenders off the pass rush as he goes out in the flats. Nobody wants to lose track of that guy and let him get the ball in the open field.

Offensive Line

Obviously against us last time, the O-line looked like 4 All-Pros at least in pass-pro. But Favre has taken his hits and sacks against other teams. My question(s) are :

1) Phil Loadholt – has he exceeded expectations? What has he struggled with this season?

2) Your new center – compare his play this year with Birk

3) What do you think are the vulnerable areas in pass protection? Stunts? Blitz recognition? Nothing?

Thanks!!!

by Sequoia on Oct 29, 2009 3:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Answers

1) YES BY FAR! Yea Phillin Phil has indeed exceeded expectations. I would honestly say that hes the ROY (Yes even ahead of my boy Percy). He has been a great stable force on the right side of the line. Somthing we havnt had since Korey Stringer. He will only get better and I can see him becoming a Pro-Bowler in the future.

2) Sullivan has been ok. Nothing flashy like Birk but he basiclly is a rookie so I’m not expecting much. No where near the play of Matty Birk, but that’s ok because he’ll only improve.

3) If you watched last week against the Steelers, they were killing us off the left side where Bryant Mckinnie plays. I doubt that’ll happen again because he is a great Tackle, but if I was the Packers coach I’d be sending AJ Hawk, Cushing, or Kampman (I don’t know who plays on that side) early on. Adrian Peterson has been getting a lot better with PassP but he is still vulnerable. So I wouldnt be surprised if they went after him in PassP. Also Straight down the chute is an area. Like I noted before Sullivan has been ok but he’s look scared under pressure. So those are the areas of concern for a Vikes fan.

Your Welcome.

really?

I think McKinnie is highly overrated. For his size it only would take a small amount of skill to be a dominant force at his position but he doesn’t seem to get there. He was expected to be the kind of guy that would grow into a pro bowler but I can’t see that happen. He’s decent, certainly better than anything we have right now on the Packers at the tackle position but I always considered him just average.

3-4 defenses have been testing for Sullivan...

I think that Sullivan has been in trial by fire mode with a nose tackle lining up directly across from him. I think that allowing Kampman to rush the passer more often was a really good call by you guys… Why take the most potent weapon out of your most talented defensive player’s hands??

by ctowner35 on Oct 30, 2009 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m glad you mentioned that. Sullivan has really struggled so far this year with guys who are bigger then him. We normally only line Pickett up at NT, but I hoping Raji lines up there more, as he is as big as Pickett but a lot quicker. I think Sullivan would really struggle with Raji.

We were all wondering the same thing and are all very happy that he has been allowed the freedom to line up as a down lineman whenever he feels necessary.

Fun Fact:

John Sullivan (our new center) has such a bizzare body shape (shortest legs ever) that he used to wear size 48-30 jeans. No jokes. His nickname on the line is ‘’big midget’‘. I guess as a center that is an ’’ok’’ trait to have.

Probably makes it harder to get underneath him and leverage him out of position...

… unless he’s got a ridiculously long back.

I heard in the offseason that AD wanted to put on 10-20 pounds and

the coach wasnt happy, did he ever gain the weight? What happened with that.

Answer

No he did not. Maybe 3-5 pounds.

The whole thing started out with: When he was at the Pro Bowl last Febraury the AFC members said that he should gain a few pounds, because than he would be harder to take down. Why would they tell him that? Because they were hoping hed do it and hes be slowed down and eaiser to tackle. But his dad told him that and was able to talk him out of that, So no AD did not gain 10-20 pounds.

oh thanks!

I only heard it once but I remember laughing because all I could see was Childress politely asking AD not to do it and then promptly giving up. Kinda like with Farve, he tries to be best friends with his players.

That must be why he fined Troy Williamson 25 large for going to his grandmother’s funeral. Nothin’ like adding insult to injury to make a player like you.

Childress is a good offensive coordinator...

… but doesn’t strike me as much of a leader.

Hmmmm....really!

Team has gone from 6 wins, to 8 wins, to 10 wins, to……

Team went from outta control to…..

Sorry, don’t agree.

Well don’t act like a LOT of Viking fans don’t like Childress. Its not like he just sat on the same team and had that increase. They’ve spent CRAZY money on FAs and other players that contribute to that increase in wins.

by TrevorR on Nov 2, 2009 8:56 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I didn’t say people don’t like him, I just questioned his not being “much of a leader”. Look at the change in Favre since he came here. It is hard to argue that doesn’t come from Chilly stressing mistake free football and controlling the game.

And as far as talent, I can name a bunch of teams loaded with talent that can’t get better each year. Besides, he has basically handpicked who he wanted on this team starting with Hutchison and ending with Greg Lewis.

by PurpleJesus on Nov 2, 2009 4:49 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, that was Head of Player Personnel Rick Speilman that hand picked these players.

by Bjorno on Nov 3, 2009 12:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

It was the “triangle of authority” they have set up. Chilly, Speilman and Ziggy Wilf. However, to be accurate, Chilly gets who he wants.

by PurpleJesus on Nov 3, 2009 4:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He gets who he wants, but who spends more time evaluating talent and who brings the suggested players to Chilly’s table fo him to make the decision?

Rick Spielman

Chilly is presented with the numbers and Spielman’s evaluation of the player, then he has his say. Of course there are players from his past that he likes, but ultimately Spielman is the guy.

by Bjorno on Nov 3, 2009 6:13 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

I see it the other way

Chilly is the one who says who he wants and Spielman approves or disapproves.

Who was the one flying out to court Jarde Allen, Favre, etc? It was Chilly not Spielman. Also, do you really think Spielman recommended Greg Lewis? Likely not, it was Chilly who had past experience with him and undoubtedly told Speilman he wanted Lewis over Wade.

We are splitting hairs here. They have done a great job as a team evaluating talent and making selections. However, as I said above, it is the Triangle of Authority they have and ultimately Chilly decides who he wants and doesn’t which I think proves my point.

That was

because Troy didnt notify anyone or anything. He just didnt show up, but yea I definitly dont agree with fining him that much but still you gotta let people know when you’re not gonna show up for practice 2-3 days in a row

Sorry, but that is a misconception.

A direct quote from Childress:

“He had a family obligation that he had to see to,” Childress said. “We sat down and talked on it before he left. … He had to do what he had to do. Everybody handles that differently. [Williamson] had to do what his family situation called for.”

To be fair, he did give Troy the money back. But still..

He's a moron.

Not completely, but he doesn’t appear to have any idea how to lead a team. That probably explains the cross-dressing too.

Yea, one of my bigger issues with him is how he tries to take talent and force it into his system rather than modifying his system to take advantage of talent.
