Waiting for Favre: Packers on MNF

No news from the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The current lines have the Vikings favored by 4 to 5.

The other two NFC North teams played on Sunday; Lions at Bears. It was tied at halftime, 21-21, and rookie QB Matthew Stafford was good for the 2nd week in a row. But the 2nd half was a disaster for the Lions, and unsurprisingly, the Bears pulled away. The special teams failed the Lions in the 2nd half, but the Lions special teams unit was ranked as the 3rd best unit after the first three weeks by Football Outsiders. To add to the 2nd half collapse, Stafford injured his knee and was replaced by QB Daunte Culpepper. The result wasn't surprising and it remains a tight race a top the NFC North.

I have trouble saying this is a must-win game. It would be a big win, and it's one of their toughest road games of the season. Only the game in Pittsburgh could be more difficult road game. Do they have to win this or is it just one that we'd all like them to win?

deff one we just want them to win.

this game would be more crippling to the vikings than beneficial to the packers. to the packers this is one part of a two part series. to the vikings this is the part of the series they ‘should win’.

the packers having the first two significant division wins would be lovely though.

I agree, not a must win

To me, the Bears look stronger than the Vikings. I’m guessing Jay Cutler will provide more firepower to a Bears team than Judas to a Vikings team. In all probability, even if the Favrkings beat us this game, they will not sustain their 40 year old man energy this entire season.

Cutler and the Bears are the ones we need to worry about getting into a (must-win) situation. This Monday Night game is just eye-candy.

Must Win? Not quite...

But if the Vikings do win tomorrow, the game at Lambeau on November 2nd will be a must win. I don’t think any game in week 4 is a must-win unless your team is 0-3. There’s too much time left, and too many ridiculous things can happen over the next 12 games.

I can’t read a calendar, apparently

Look at this rationally, and this isn't a must win

The Packers aren’t the team that has been hyped incessantly all off-season, and then even more once Favre came on board. The Packers aren’t the team many picked as a lock to be the NFC team in the Super Bowl. The Packers aren’t playing at home, and don’t have the pressure of expectations hovering over them like the Vikings do

By al rights, the Vikings should be 2-1 as well, as they were badly outplayed last week, but the 49ers dropped a couple of picks, and Favre had the miracle throw. The Packers can play fast and loose tonight.

by TarHeelHawk on Oct 5, 2009 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Badly outplayed?

What are you speaking of? We got more yards on offense and allowed fewer on defense. If you have a made fieldgoal instead of a block the other way that is a 10 point swing. That is what happens when you play the woulda coulda shoulda game.

It's a "Not a must but a really really really need it" win

Going into a bye week at 3-1 is a hell of a lot different than going in at 2-2. for a team’s psyche.

psyche at stake

Most expect the NFC North to be a tight 3 team race so any divisional home game is almost a must wn.

But it’s certainly a must win for me

It's A Must Win; for the Vikings

This would be a huge win for the Packers but it is a must win for the Vikings. If the Packers win, then they have 2 wins against the other top teams in the division already. If they lose, the Packers still have a win against the Bears and a huge home game against Minny where they can even it up.

If the Vikings lose; number one it’s a division loss at home and secondly they would then probably have to win in Green Bay to have a shot at the Bears or Packers to win the division. If both teams win their home games against one another, it really means nothing in the long run, like they didn’t even play each other. If one of the teams sweeps, I would guess they’re definitely the favorite to win the division.

by GGGamer on Oct 5, 2009 1:54 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

???

It’s so early in the season it can’t be “must-win” for anybody. However, if the Packers lose, they are 2 games behind the Vikings and 1 behind the Bears. That isn’t insurmountable, but I’d much rather have a 2-game lead over my arch rival than be 2 games behind, wouldn’t you?

by ktenreb on Oct 5, 2009 2:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let Me Clarify

The game alone is not a must win for anyone, however, if the Vikings lose, the game at Lambeau in a month might be a must win game for them in regards to the division race. This definitely isn’t a must win game for the Packers. If the Vikings lose, I almost see them needing a victory in Lambeau to win the division.

by GGGamer on Oct 5, 2009 2:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Since when is a game against a division rival NOT a "must win"?

Especially this season in this division when it’s obvious that any 1 of 3 teams can win.

In another post it’s mentioned that ……..“There’s too much time left, and too many ridiculous things can happen over the next 12 games.”………. but it’s just that sort of thinking that makes this a “Must Win” game. After tonight’s game, we’re 1/4 of the way through the season. With so much talk about a 40 year old QB eventually breaking down and crushing the Vikings hopes of a title, there’s too much assumption that the very agile AR will be able to stay healthy all season when his OL is playing so poorly. Ridiculous things DO happen during the season, which makes a win away from home against a division rival so important. An early division cushion as insurance in case something happens later in the year.

As someone on the outside looking in, it just feels like the Packer fans who are giving reasons and explaining away why this game isn’t that important are almost expecting a loss and are pointing towards the game in Green Bay as the REAL important game and the game they can win. That thinking doesn’t make much sense to me.

I’m a Packer fan and that is my thought as well. I think a lot of the folks playing down the importance of this game are doing so because it’s one the Vikings have an advantage in winning. I do think that it is more important for the Vikings than the Packers though because if the Packers even it out in Lambeau, it’s almost like the two games didn’t even take place. It’s a scratch. The only way either of these games matter in the long run is if one of the teams sweeps the other. I think if the Vikings sweep the Pack then the Vikings will win the division. I think if the Packers sweep the Vikings then the Pack will win the division. So I do think we need to wait until the game that is played in a month but it isn’t because I’m downplaying the significance of this one because I think the Vikings have the upper hand.

yah hey!

funny how we have the same accent, yet totally different perspective. a team with more titles than any other, vs a team with no titles but expects one after “stealing” the best player the other team had. remember Herschel walker. 15 and 1 anyone? ask me if I’m upset they got favre AFTER it’s made any difference to me whatsoever. things change, it’s just a matter of the change being for the better…

Help!

Stuck at the Dallas/Ft. Worth airport and will probably be in the air for the first 3 quarters. Can anyone tell me if the game is streaming on ESPN 360. It probably won’t be worth it to pay for onboard WiFi if it is only on justin.tv but a solid ESPN stream would. Thanks guys!

Good luck from a Giants fan

and more importantly, someone who just wants Brett Favre to go away. I hope he forgets which uniform he’s supposed to be throwing to and gives you guys a few pick 6’s.

"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09

BTW...

If the Packers win it was a must win to set the tone for the season, if they lose, it was not and is simply one of 16 games that will prepare us for the playoffs ;-)

Hiya Cheeseheads.

Just swinging by to offer my support as one of the many people who are sick to death of the Farvity-Farve-Farve-Farve show. That said, your biggest problem isn’t Mr. Grizzleverteranhappytobeouthereplaysjustlikeakideventhoughhe’salmostfortyandthat’swhywelovetowatchhimplaywhattagunslinger, but rather the run game.

Good luck.

By the way, what’s the Acme Co. consensus on the job Joe Philbin is doing?

I like the fact that the national press has put all the attention on Favre.

I just hope that tonight can be a successful coming out party for Rodgers and the Packers’ 3-4 defense. No one expects it, so it would be nice to see both come up big.

Lots of talk about Favre’s revenge, etc… I just hope it doesn’t come true. It just seems to me that Favre seems to forget that he slowly but surely wore out his welcome in Green Bay with his “retiree who cried wolf” when it came to calling it quits. It wore thin on many Packer fans and the ability of the Packer organization to plan.

Though I am happy for the 16 years that Favre gave the Packers, no matter how tonight’s game turns out, I for one, am happy we have Rodgers and think we have the right quarterback in #12 now wearing green & gold.

Go Rodgers & Go Pack!!
