Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Thank You, NFL Schedulemakers

Going into this week, I was tired of not having the ability to watch Green Bay play in non-nationally televised games.  Except for the opening game against Chicago, the Minnesota game, and the Baltimore game later this year, the most Packer football I get to see most Sundays is during halftime shows and highlight packages on NFL.com.  Considering a fair amount of my free time goes into writing for this site, not being able to see what the readers are seeing is a severe handicap.

It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't live in the New York TV market, leaving me to choose between Giants and Jets games.  Don't get me wrong, both teams are fun to watch, but it feels almost...wrong.

Going into this week, I decided on a whim to check the New York teams' schedules.  Originally, the Jets were scheduled for 1:00 PM and the Giants were slated to play at 4:15 PM.  I had forgotten about the announcement earlier this season that the Giants game (at Philadelphia) would be moving up to 1:00 PM...and the Green Bay-Minnesota tilt was pushed to 4:15.

But it couldn't be that easy, could it?  It has to be too good to be true, doesn't it?  That was my attitude when I woke up this morning (at 2 AM...working third shift during the week is a bitch).  I decided to check the TV schedule for the day, just to further my misery.

At 4:00 PM, CBS is showing bull riding.  Awesome.  On FOX, immediately following the Giants game, they're showing Minnesota at Green Bay.

...Wait, what?

Awesome.

Consider this your pre-game live thread until Brandon publishes the real game thread.  Enjoy your morning, gents.  I know I will...because at 4:00 PM (3:00 central)...it's on.

Yeah Thanks!

I normally go into work right before kickoff (11am)on Sundays so I almost never see any Packer football, like you, unless its prime-time or I can record it or something. Also, there’s a site for torrenters who are interested (tenyardtorrents.com) in downloading. In any case, since they pushed the time for this game, I was able to finagle a work shift change from a co-worker and do the day shift, now I get off at 2:30 so I won’t even miss kickoff. Beautiful!

GO PACK!

Packers news

There hasn’t been much Green Bay Packers news since Friday. TE Jermichael Finley is still a game time decision, according to the Journal-Sentinel. But he hasn’t practiced all week, and I’m not sure I want him to play. If nothing else, he might make an effective decoy as the Vikings will remember he torched them for 128 yards in their earlier meeting.

Also, QB Brett Favre is feeling bad. Not about his return to Lambeau, but he’s been on antibiotics for the last three weeks, according to the Press-Gazette.

My early games are Seahawks at Cowboys. Ugh. But I’ve also got Broncos at Ravens, which should be a good game.

Just curious, Brandon

You said you lived outside Madison. Does Madison get its own affiliates or do you just get Milwaukee stations? Don’t ask me why I’m so curious, because I don’t have an answer for you.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Berrian's out, according to Fox Sports...

… while he’s the least of their top 3 WRs, I’d rather deal with Lewis than him. No word on Harvin yet that I’ve seen, though I’m assuming he’ll play just like every other week in which his migraines acted up.

It’s gonna be one of those Sundays where I’ll be rooting for the Packers. How about sacking Favre 8 times?

I find it interesting that all these pre-game hype shows are very pro-Favre

and anti-Packers in the move to Rodgers. Do all these “so called” analysts forget how Favre’s cold weather stats continued to decline in his last three years?

What good did that 13-3 season do the Packers when Favre no longer was a dominant cold weather QB? Even Brett was admitting in post-game interviews that he (and his hands) no longer liked those brutally cold Dec/Jan games.

Seems to me that given all of Brett’s retirement waffling and the COLD HARD FACTS about his inability to exploit the winter home field advantage, Thompson & Co made the right move to a QB who is doing quite well, in spite of having little to no offensive line protection.

I just hope that after today, the press attention will rightly be on how good Rodgers is—and all this Favre hype can be behind us. Rodgers is a great NFC story that no one is talking about.

It's not a new phenomena.

It just never bothered me before because he was always playing for the team I was backing. Favre is always the story. If they paint him as the bad guy, or even partially responsible, the story isn’t as good and they’re less likely to get a call or a text the next time they need him.

Pretty much why I’m not watching the pregame stuff this week.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Remember in 2005 and 2006 when all of those empty talking heads were bashing Favre and saying he should retire?

I was thinking about doing something similar to that.

Basically gather all the media personalities, compare what they said a few years ago to what they are saying now. I just wouldn’t have the time to do that. But what you said is very relevant.

I don’t watch them either. I gave up on Fox and ESPN years ago. I tune into the NFL Network sometimes to catch a few injury updates before the games but I don’t have time for those righteous pricks anymore!

by TrevorR on Nov 2, 2009 10:13 AM CST up reply actions

I threw up in my mouth a little everytime I heard someone on FOX talk about how "clutch" Favre is.

Not bashing the guy because I’m bitter, but Favre has not been clutch for a long time. Yea, yea, he had that 49ers game but that was more attributable to Lewis on a fantastic catch.

by Charlie Kelly on Nov 1, 2009 12:03 PM CST up reply actions

the legend is quickly catching up to #4's ego...

as I wrote earlier, I just hope that some of the Favre-loving press will begin to notice the incredible job that Rodgers is doing for the Packers. A victory today for Green Bay would certainly help correct that “problem.”

…so would some better play by the offensive line!

eh

I am not going there. Favre was known for being clutch and even was in his final years with us. To deny that would be bitter sounding.

by TrevorR on Nov 2, 2009 10:14 AM CST up reply actions

BTW, Bradshaw on his Fox interview of Saint Brett did ask him, "if after the 2007 season

you had said you loved the team and wanted to take another shot instead of saying what you said, don’t you think you would still be here?" And Favre basically ignored the question. So contrary to what I said above, at least TB sees through Favre’s act—

You (the unwritten media rule) just can’t be direct in calling him out on trying to end his career with a dome team.

Of course, I expect Rodgers to break off big plays more often than Cutler – that may be what’s informing the defensive play-calling.

The Browns offense still stinks.

Stop kidding yourself.

Vikings fans would be booing their asses off if the shoe was on the other foot.

Anyway, what’s more pathetic? Booing a guy who once played for your team? Or a fan of his new team coming to a Packer message board to tell a bunch of people how pathetic they are for booing when, by definition, he knows the readers of that comment aren’t at the game?

I should get a life, huh?

There are plenty of great Packer fans out there. But what you and other boo-birds seemingly fail to acknowledge is that Favre brought years of happiness to the Packers. He led them out of years of floundering to the pinnacle od professional football. Now all some Packer fans can do is lay hate on Brett. They are the ones that need to get a life. You do too if you are one of them, and I believe you are since you leap to defend them. Disgraceful.

Your loss is the Vikings gain. Two games vs the Packers and Brett has 2 wins, 41 completions in 59 attempts, 515 yards, 7 TDs, 0 INTs. Wallow in your misery Ted.
