Mike McCarthy On The Packers Offensive Line

Photo

by Steve Nesius - AP

During his Monday press conference, Mike McCarthy said RT Mark Tauscher may play on Sunday against the Cowboys, or he may be out a couple weeks. Obviously former starter RT Allen Barbre would play in his place, but he hasn't played well all season.

McCarthy said he wouldn't switch the coaching responsibilities for the offensive line or special teams at this point. As much as James Campen's and Shawn Slocum's units have struggled, it's not like he can go out and sign Bobby April and Alex Gibbs right now to replace them. The only coaches apparently available at this time of year are in semi-retirement and calling bingo.

Though it does look like T.J. Lang is set to replace Daryn Colledge at left guard, according to the Journal-Sentinel. Of course it would be great if Jason Spitz could step in, but he's unfortunately done for the season. It's about time for Colledge's benching. He gave up a lot of sacks for a guard in 2008, and I've been hoping for his benching since the game in Minneapolis. Actually I don't know how he got his job back after he was benched in 2007.

McCarthy was pretty clear about what needed to be done:

We don't need wholesale change. We may need to adjust some things and that will be our focus. But as far as going outside the building, I'm not going to sit here and tell you that I have all the answers, but I'm very confident in the issues that we've had in pass protection, that they are correctable.

Which is fine, but I wonder if he meant correctable this season. Or with the players currently on the roster. Contrast that statement to something he said after the Bengals game when DE Antwan Odom had 5 sacks:

At some point, you have to win the one-on-one battle with the help being secondary instead of a primary focus.

They were losing one-on-one battles back in week 2, and it hasn't looked much better since then. If your players can't win the one-on-one battles, the only thing would seem to correct the problem is new players.

Sweet baby Jesus, yes.

I think I said a few weeks ago that Daryn Colledge needs to teach high school, because he’d be a whole lot better at that than playing guard in the National Football League.

rumor with no proof

I gotta imagine DC parties a lot.

dude gets tossed around every week, doesn’t improve, spends too much time making his dumb a$$ videos, etc.

at least Lang plays nasty.

glad we had Tauscher for one game, that was sweet.

Yeah

Seeing a RT who could actually sustain a block was such a relief. And then seeing our only RT who can sustain a block twist his knee was like a stab in the heart. It was all downhill from there.

Tausch

Like I said a few weeks ago… Tauch wasn’t ready for Minn, and clearly he wasn’t ready for TB either! He looked OK for a half, but it was obvious his knee wasn’t ready for the stress of playing in the NFL!

I wish it wasn’t the case, but it is… Any OT coming back from an ACL has to be FULLY recovered. His knee may have been healed, but I don’t think it is ready to play in the NFL. Just too much stress on the joint to take the kind of beating an OL gets in the NFL on an every play basis.

Tauscher

only 1 sack when he was in and 5 when he wasn’t. He’s better at 75% than Barbare at 100%.

READ

I didn’t say Tauscher isn’t better than Barbre… He is! What I said was that he knee wasn’t ready for the stress of playing NFL games. The fact he was unable to finish the game, just makes my point!!! If he wasn’t a 32 yr old OT, coming off his 2nd ACL reconstruction on the same knee, he might have been able to avoid the reinjury. Step slow and unable to take the pounding and stresses subjected to the knee in an NFL game left him vulnerable!!!

Partying?

That didn’t hamper Max McGee…

Yeah

You did tell me a few weeks ago that Colledge wasn’t a serviceable G but I didn’t listen. He is so inconsistent, and always seems to be playing so high. Which as a football player you learn not to in grade school football.

It really just amazes me that we went into the year with the line that we did. Is anyone else wondering how bad Giancomini must be?

Why?

Teaching is a tough job, and an important one.

Maybe he should be a lawyer.

Ouch!

Point for uglyfatpimplynerd!

Except lawyers have 7 years of schooling and we make big money, at least the good ones do (like me).

you're a lawyer?!

It all makes sense now!

:-D

wow

i call for the firing of T.T. and M.M.. They have destroyed this team an have been losing fans for the last 2 tears now. come sunday i rather watch other teams that play at the level they are paid to. Hell I would rather watch Detriot and the Scins go at it again at least that had been more of a game then the packers.

Totally agree

You know what you’re going to get from the Packers, you know what MM is going to say afterwards, you know what will change, which is nothing. There’s no suspense, no intrigue.

1st give play calling to Philbin

MM could be a coach, but he is no good at coordinator.

Thank god

This article also said that if Tauscher can’t go at RT that Lang will start ahead of Barbre there. Barbre is EASILY our worst lineman, and I am praying to God that Tauscher can go so we can get both of our weakest links off the field (Barbre and Colledge).

Hello cheeseheads

Times are ruff in GB this week. The Dallas fans know that felling only to well. We haven’t won anything in 13 years. Tex and Tom are rolling their graves. But everything is rosey right now we beat the hated Eagles. Nobody in Dallas thinks this game is going to be easy and if they do they are fools. GB is that wounded tiger looking for something to kill. You guys have a good team that can beat anyone.

You guys have a good team that can beat anyone.

Unfortunately, that good team usually only shows up for 1-2 quarters of a 4 quarter game. Seeing what your pass rush was able to do against a good Eagles offensive line scares the hell out of me, and probably all of our offensive line starters.

Thanks for the respect

Unfortunately, our frustrations in upper management are getting bigger and bigger.

I like the move in putting Lang at LG. I think he will be a far better guard than Colledge.

Put up with Jerry for 20 years.

After having Tex and Landry for 29 years it’s like a butt whipping.

It's interesting

and completely refreshing to see a good amount of ‘Boys backers around here that are insightful and respectful. A vast improvement over the Viking trolls we’ve been dealing with for the last couple weeks.

Hope to see more of that!

After dealing with the Philly fans

last week it’s a pleasure to talk to you guys. Come over to our site anytime. Most of the guys there are polite and just love to talk football. It seemed like Philly fans just wanted to argue and rub in the 44-6 but whipping they gave us last year.

by DIRE WOLF on Nov 10, 2009 2:47 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Indeed

Seems like your Philly fans are our Viking fans, except Troy Aikman never went to Philly to get back at Jerry Jones, compounding an already bad situation even worse.

The front seven is solid this year.

But the DBs can be had. Dallas picked up Brooking and it has been a big upgrade at LB and he is a leader. Dallas needed that as much as a good LB.

by DIRE WOLF on Nov 10, 2009 11:40 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't fret about that

Rodgers is contracted to hold the ball longer than the average age of a bull elephant so your DBs can take the week off.

by rudi on Nov 10, 2009 1:36 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Ohhhhhhh

The frustration in seeing the ball not thrown. The feeling you get afte Rodgers takes a devastating hit! Ahhhhh!

Yea people who want to talk football instead of trash talking!!

I Know there’s a lot of bad blood between our two teams considering our history. I’m guilty of it myself. But when your met with trash talking well you know what my response would be. My guess is that most of these fans are young and have no manners. The Vikings have aquired a whole lot of young fans that drink to much, thats why they cut off the alcohol by the third quarter. It’s only a football game. If I walk down the streets of Minneapolis with my Packer Jacket on I always hear someboby scream Packers Suck! Real classy Huh! I have never screamed out Cowboys or Vikings Suck. It’s so direspectful. So come over here anytime. I have some Cowboy and Viking fans for friends and we kid each other all the time but nothing serious.Just good old fashion ribbing.

I never hated GB you guys always seemed to have alot of class.

The games in the 60s were great even though we lost. We were up and coming and y’all were the champs. It would have been great to beat you but it didn’t happen. Tom and Vince were great friends and had a lot of respect for each other going back to the days in NY. There is no wonder why NYG were so good in the 50s with the OC and DC they had. We did have your number for awhile in the 90s, but Dallas had everyone’s number for a few years then.

I hear you.

Romo can drive you crazy with the ints and fumbles. He seems to be getting better this year, but at any time he could fall off the wagon and go back to his old ways.
