The British Invasion In Green Bay
Via Football Outsiders. An englishman in Green Bay, from the BBC:
I was in Green Bay over the weekend with BBC 5 live sports extra - as part of the first ever British commentary team to broadcast live from the US - to witness the hometown Packers record a much-needed win over the visiting Dallas Cowboys at Lambeau Field.

I thought it was a good article.
I also especially liked this bit:
Me: “What do you like to do on game day here at the stadium?”
Fan: “Drink.”
Me: “What is so special about a game day experience in Green Bay?”
Fan: “The drink.”
Me: “But there’s some good food out here as well. Is that an important part of the day?”
Fan: “Sometimes it can be. But if you eat too much, you get full – and then you can’t drink.”
I can’t knock it too much though, considering that sums up what I do for the two hours before the Vikes take the field. A little bit of food, and a lot of booze.
When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.
Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

It's not strictly true though
The UK has received live broadcasts via 5 Xtra all season and on TV, channels 4, 5 and Sky have broadcast an average of four live games a week for YEARS now, so it’s hardly a novelty.
I first saw the Packers in 1981, the start of my obsession, although, admittedly, it was followed by about 10 years of scanning SW for AFN broadcasts and hoovering up NFL VHS cassettes and weekly highlights on 4 and Transworld Sport. Since then, though, I’ve been well served by actual telly and, with the internet going all shiny and speedy, I’ve not missed a game in years.
Put it this way – if we’re on late night Sunday there’s no contest. C5 offer intelligent analysis, no adverts and not a sniff of Boomer Esiason. Win! :-)

There’s been NFL on Five Live Xtra? Dammit, how come I missed that? Oh well, thanks for the heads up.
