What was this 3-4 supposed to buy us again?
I have an idea. After being schooled by Favre for like 95 minutes this year, with about 10 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and 3rd and 17, let's rush 3, cause Favre has proven he can't figure it out when we do. Wasn't this defense supposed to be the unpredictable, pressuring type that quarterbacks can't coexist with? When he was finally humiliated enough to pressure Favre, the next series, a 3 and out, Favre released a couple of quackers that could have been easily intercepted. It is just hard to fathom a scenario that allows the Favre legend to grow anymore than a defensive coordinator who just lets it happen. Our defense had nothing for Favre until being totally humiliated, and that is the fault of Capers.- The aforementioned 3 man rush was embarrassing and the results were predictable, as I moaned before the completion, which was followed up by a 50 yard td strike. Thompson is just stubborn, the O line will fix itself, cause he won't do anything about it, but the man power is there on the D. The coaching is lacking. Good thing we play so many terrible teams this year. We may still make the playoffs. Where we will 3 man rush ourselves into oblivion.

Well played, sir.

I'm still not sold on the 3-4
Mostly because I think we could have a pretty beastly front four with Jenkins, Pickett, Raji, and Kampman with Jolly subbing in.
Exactly
Then think about Matthews at ROLB instead of Poppinga.

I was thinking that for the longest time and it makes me sad panda.

Just a thought...
But the Packers had the #3 defense in the league heading into the Vikings game. I’m not sure where it is now, but #3 is pretty damn good. There really is no excuse to surrendering so many points, but our defense is a whole lot better than it’s been in recent history…
exactly
I think people have the perception that our D is worse than it is…its not great but man we are LIGHT YEARS ahead of last year already and its our first year in it. I think we were all duped into thinking there wouldn’t be growing pains by all the talks of Capers and his “hybred” 3-4 transitions but honestly its better than people like to think it is!
consider the opposition
The 3 games we lost were against the opponents that are good, note the close of the comment above, we can not advance in playoffs with a scheme that doesn’t try to pressure QB’s . If we played all our games against high school teams our defense would rank higher than #3.
the teams that beat us...
were just better teams. The Bengals were a good team no one knew about yet, the Vikings just came in and beat us because they are just better. There I said it. Doesn’t mean couldn’t beat them later in the season but right now, they are the better all around team. Our D isn’t as bad as people want to paint it though…
yeah and actually there have
only been two QBs to hurt us at all… One is older than dirt and was around for the creation of the NFL so he knows about the 3-4 and the other one Palmer plays against some of the best 3-4 D’s in the league a couple times a year so he is by far used to it too.
We need more pass rush
the rest of the defense is fine but Kampman needs to blitz on every FREAKING PLAY! In a three point stance too. Blitzing him 70’ percent of the time makes him only 70 percent effective.
He was a outside linebacker not becuase management thought he would be better in coverage, but because thats what they call pass rushers in 3-4’s. So stop trying to make him one.
I expected to see basically 4 people on the line with the rest of the D playing 3-4 but that is not what I have seen. We need to trade Kampman because the coaching obviously won’t change it. (can we trade after the deadline in any way?)

wow whats with the negativity....
What was the other huge problem in last years D??? Anyone remember? Oh yeah its the one thing every post has left out so far run D! We were the 26th ranked team against the run last season giving up more than 2,000 yards of rushing!! For a 4.6 ypc and 20 rushing tds! This season.. we have given up 696 yards only a 3.5 ypc and 3 rushing tds! We are ranked 9th in the league against rushing.. And going up against the best RB in the league we have held him to 152 yards on 50 carries which is a 3.04 ypc and 2 of the 3 rushing tds and dont forget these are all numbers from 2 games against the best RB in the NFL. Seems to me the 3-4 is making more progress than anyone wants to give credit

Not enough good blitzers
The 3-4 is supposed to cause confusion thru blitzing, however, the only really good blitzer we seem to have is Clay Matthews and he’s a rookie. I think that the reason the Pack isn’t blitzing more that since they don’t actually get to the QB, all the blitz has done is remove 2-3 defenders from pass coverage.
good thought
I’ve thought about this as well, and agree to a degree. But I don’t think we have actually blitzed enough to actually know.
