Around SBN: Sean Keeley's Week 12 College Football Buffet

Just had to share

I'm not too sure how many people here read Bill Simmons' column on ESPN, but I do. He's funny, and he normally seems like he has his head on straight. He's a much bigger Basketball guy than a Football guy, but he still cranks out columns giving the gambling lines on teams during the football season. For those of you who don't read him, here's what he had to say about the Pack vs Bucs game.

Packers (-9.5) over BUCS
Mayday! Mayday! The Josh Freeman 2009 White Flag has been thrown. By the way, Aaron Rodgers is this year's Great Game Against A Bad Team MVP. His stats have no correlation with his actual effectiveness. Even Al Bundy didn't hold his balls this long.

That last line killed me. If you're interested in more of his columns, I recommend looking up the Vengeance Scale. It should be required reading for just about everyone.

Finally, Go! Pack! Go!

...

What? I picked them in my survivor pool this week. Don't look at me like that.

Hey look...

… a Viking fan that feels the need to post something ripping Rodgers even after the season’s matchups between the two teams is over. AND he’s quoting an NBA reporter whose insight into the game of football is so complete that he’s blaming a quarterback when a team loses.

How utterly original in every way.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Perhaps it's time to let it go?

And maybe enjoy something that is humorous? Geez!

by PurpleJesus on Nov 7, 2009 5:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I was going to suggest that it was time for Viking fans to let it go...

… but based on the recent article in DN, that appears unlikely. It’s puzzling to me why Viking fans would still be thinking about the Packers and Packer fans under the current circumstances, but whatever.

Besides, it just wasn’t that funny.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

It was funny....

But you just don;t get it….

Oh, and we never quite had the anger toward you guys like you had toward us and “BF” anyway. So for us, there isn’t really anything to “let go”.

Of course you don't.

I just find it funny that a Viking fan hanging around here at this moment would feel he was in a position to suggest to anyone else that they “let it go.”

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Nov 7, 2009 8:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Damn man… This all started because of a Al Bundy reference and for some reason you decided to lecture the author about how unoriginal he was. I tried to give it some light by saying “maybe you should try and enjoy something humorous” and “Let it go”. You then took it to places it didn’t need to go.

Once again, as for me being here, now or any other time, I come here every day and will probably continue to do so all year long. At least as long as you have a chance to make the playoffs, just like the Giants, Bears and Eagles sites. So please don’t question why I am here. I haven’t once said anything derogative toward the Packer team. In fact, if you look back I am sure you can see where I actually said Favre had to go and Rodgers was a good QB.

by PurpleJesus on Nov 7, 2009 8:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Right.

And I’m telling you that you’re in no position to lecture.

Tit for tat I guess

And in no position to lecture? Why because I am on APC? Again, I tried to lighten a situation up where you came off like a jacka$$. Nothing more, nothing less. I gave it right back to you as I always will when something is as sarcastic and provoking as your original comment. So, touche.

by PurpleJesus on Nov 7, 2009 8:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

"And in no position to lecture? Why because I am on APC?"

Pretty much. You’re welcome, of course. It’s not my site and I often enjoy my interactions with Viking fans. But the fact that you’re hanging around a Packer site and telling Packer fans to let it go strikes me as pretty hypocritical.

“I tried to lighten a situation up where you came off like a jackass.”

Yeah, because “perhaps its time to let it go” is really light hearted and humorous. I’m sorry you were bothered by my comment or that you found it provoking; I guess that’s what I found the original post by Robert Rence to be (particularly since he’s the character who turned up over here a couple of weeks back to tell Packer fans to be polite to Viking fans in the ramp up to last week’s game). Was I sarcastic? You bet your ass. Do I regret that? Not in the slightest. I suspect that if I posted a link on DN to an article that took a shot at AP or Favre (even one that tried to be funny in the process) I’d get a negative reaction too, and I’d probably deserve it. I would hope that the Packer fans around here would be smart enough not take a holier than thou stance in the comment section that followed.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Nov 7, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

well then...

…I guess Mission Accomplished. You got what you dished out. and to expect any less is unrealistic. On APC, or not.

And yes what Robert said was funny and simply a light hearted moment. This is the same Robert that posted on both sites prior to the game “not to be a jacka$$”. And now, afterward you chose to be the jacka$$ in a light hearted moment.

And yes, many, many Packer fans have been our site berating the Favre move and what a mistake it would be etc. and all probably took it on the chin with comments, and Favre wins to follow. All of which were rightfully deserved.

To the contrary, I have done nothing but say positive things about Rodgers and even as such I even found the comment above funny. While you sir, are showing that you are a very sore loser and obviosuly cannot find humor in something so clever.

I'm a reader of Simmons

but he’s been slipping lately. He’s less likely to admit his mistakes, quibbles with his editors too much, and over the past year I get the sense that he’s starting to get really full of himself.

The biggest thing that gets me, though, is that he comes off as knowing everything about every NFL team, when he doesn’t. He knows a lot, but he only follows a few teams closely enough to really know what’s up with them. I think this is a byproduct of his working for ESPN; he gets most of his information from them, and they obviously focus on a few select teams and make generalizations about the rest.

For example, he dubs Rodgers the “Great Game Against A Bad Team MVP.” Does he know that Green Bay has only played two upper tier teams (Cincinnati, Minnesota) who each have outstanding pass defenses (at least Cincy did before Odom got hurt) and generally matched up well against Green Bay? Did David Carr get blamed for all the failure in Houston while he was there? Some, but most of it was on his lack of protection (surprise, surprise).

It’s not even his fault; he’s a basketball guy by trade, and nobody has enough time in the world to follow ALL the NBA teams and ALL the NFL teams enough to write effectively about them. It’s not humanly possible.

"Brandon Jennings needs a nickname before he gives himself one. Oh wait, Young Money, he already did."

Former reader of Simmons too

I’ll still read his NBA stuff because my love of MLB, NFL and NHL usually leaves the NBA lost in the shuffle and he is absolutely obsessed with the damn league. But his NFL stuff is darn near unreadable for all the examples and reasons you cited.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

He's also ignoring the fact that Rodgers played nearly as well against those teams as he did against the bad ones....

… but hey, why let the facts get in the way of a 15 year old pop culture reference it took him an hour to dream up?

Mitchell...

It seems your comment

Does he know that Green Bay has only played two upper tier teams (Cincinnati, Minnesota) who each have outstanding pass defenses
proves his point, no? Simmons was saying that Rodgers runs his stats up against bad teams, not good ones.

Now I do realize Rodgers wound up with good stats in both Vikings games trying to come from behind but I do get Simmons “humor about holding the ball” even though I think Rodgers is an up and coming star. Bottom line is that this should be a very correctable problem.

You shouldn’t be surprised that you are getting bitch-slapped (appropriately enough) over here for doing it.

Not sure if you are talking to me or not…. But I am not taking shot’s at anyone and never intended to. I simply tried to say something was funny and suggested that perhaps it was time to move on and laugh. How in the workd is that taking a shot?

And, yeah, keep throwing stones and saying we are going to be horrible soon enough. Frankly, that talk doesn’t bother me because I know what we are building is for many years to come. It is not a one year team. Brett may only play one year but I am sure we will make plans to fill in if he leaves…. Also, so what if we don;t win a Super Bowl this year, so what! Again, it is a young team built to keep getting better. So, punchline, no, not unless 12 wins or more is a punchline.

by PurpleJesus on Nov 7, 2009 7:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

We'll see who is build to for success.

You’re having a great year. I’ll take nothing from that. But the Vikings team is not built for the future. The Vikings have to make a push this year, because you won’t have a chance to do so again any time soon. You might be in a better position than the Bears though, but they have a franchise QB (of at least think they do). The Bears team is really, really old. But back to the Vikings: I was really surprised you guys let Booty go for a little while there. I was under the impression that he was being groomed for good things. I thought he showed promise.

I’m not mad at you guys, if I was in your position I would be getting my shots in also. You’re on top this year and the division is yours to lose.

by StephanL on Nov 7, 2009 10:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree that their time is definetly now

Brett Favre plays for one more year at most then it’s back to the drawing board at QB. With the way Peterson plays (He’s gonna hurt himself charging at guys like he does) and the fact that RBs seem to only get three to four great years, I wouldn’t imagine him remaining dominant for a whole lot longer. Two of your top defensive players (Winfield and Pat Williams) are getting older and one of them (Williams) looks to be on the decline already.

But hey, they’re doing great now, just saying that they aren’t really built for the future.

by Charlie Kelly on Nov 7, 2009 10:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree also

that their time is now. I think they’re a good team but not as good as N.O.maybe. Bringing in Favre was a gamble if it does’nt work out they will be behind for years to come. To say that Rodgers only does well against poor teams is rediculous concidering he’s done better against those teams than some other top rated QBs Favre included.

by cheddarhead on Nov 8, 2009 12:17 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

We are very young as a team

Winfield is signed for a few more years and we keep drafting to find the right guys to fill in and improve our secondary.

Pat Wiliiams is indeed declining and I believe Letroy Guillon is already as good as him (not so on run but better on pass) and will step in soon enough if they don’t draft a beast somehow.

QB… Hmmmm…. Personally I do not think Favre will be back next year unless we come really close and then he likely will. If he doesn’t, I personally have believed for some time that McNabb is in Chilly’s plans beginning next year and has been for some time. McNabb is wearing out his welcome in Philly and Kolb performed admirably in the few games he started this year. I could see something happening there – although I don’t think McNabb can do as well as Favre has this year so far.

Other than that, look at the post on DN about Player Rankings. You can see all of our top half (starters) are very, very young with the exception of the few mentioned above (and Longwell). The nice part is that they are spread out positional issues that can be addressed without negatively impacting the whole offense or defense.

This could be a mixed bag though. It has a lot of upside if you have a lot of young players who are good. Good talent for years is not a bad thing.

But the thing that fans all too often forget while talking about talented young teams is the dreaded contract talks. When these young players demand more money for playing well, you either have to pay up or focus on which players you need to keep while letting others walk. I feel the contract issue happens on the first and last contracts they sign. First because a player may flop after signing a big contract while young. Last because (most notably older RB’s) could have a serious drop off.

The young player issue bothers me a little bit though. I just don’t like how the draft allows some of these young players sign huge contracts before stepping on an NFL field. Makes me very apprehensive of the contract situation in the NFL.

I hate the contracts that unproven players are getting in the 1st round. How long before more teams take the NE Patriot approach and trade 1st Rd picks for two 2nd RD picks, etc.?

It's sad

that it has gotten to the point where teams don’t want to have high draft picks because of the money entailed with drafting that high. A team gets the number 1 pick and can’t find anyone who would possibly consider trading into that spot. Makes no sense.

It is one of the more annoying aspects of the game

How all of these rookies are so entitled before even playing a down. They need a system like the NBA where there a player is paid a certain amount for where they are drafted so you don’t have anymore of this Crabtree nonsense. I also think they should make a lot less money. Nothing against Stafford but at this point in his career he does not deserve to make top money like he does.

I agree that the Vikings look to be equipped to be very competitive for the next 5 years.

AP nearly accomplishes that by himself. The Vikings are old at DT and QB, which are fairly important positions, and they’ll need to address those soon to stay at or near where they are right now, and I still think their DB’s are below average after Winfield, but every good team has problems like that in today’s NFL.

humor

at the expense of your team only works when the team is really performing well or when its done by someone everyone really likes. When its done by “the enemy” its seen as threatening and its going to get backlash from people.

Personally it didn’t bother me, I am most certainly not going to take wisdom on football from THAT GUY who is paid to know basketball, but I got a chuckle on the Bundy reference.

if you stick to quality football discussion and stay away from jokes at the opponent’s expense (be they good or bad jokes) then everything should be fine. Am I to suppose that no one @ DN got offended/annoyed by any Love Boat jokes?

Your discussions on football have always been fairly balanced, even if they are coming from a Vikings perspective, so lets just stick to that.

Notoriously horrible teams can take jokes with the best of them as well. Amendment to your original statement. This joke is just not funny, creative, or original. Now if say some former Packer would fart on some other former Packer on national television, that may catch a brief chuckle/wtf laugh from me.

I withdraw,

and apologize for, my inclusion of the author in my earlier comments directed at that idiot, PJ.
The joke was lame, though.

Are you kidding?

First of all, “most of Packer Nation is rooting for Favre to win a Super Bowl?” Get real. I am hoping he fails miserably.

Second, personal attacks of this sort are so far over the line that its not worth discussing. Get a life. We can all disagree about the Favre situation but come on.

RR, I for one welcome your visits and hope you continue to drop by from time to time to discuss football. I understand there will be flare-ups whenever a rival fan comes onto our site but I think you do a decent job of not antagonizing people over here. But that is just my opinion.

Trolling defined:
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response1 or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

I got “hot and bothered” because your post was poorly-written garbage directed personally at me. Oddly enough, it’s been modded from the APC and yet it remains on the DN. But that’s getting into other issues.

In addition to criticizing how you post, I even tackled a few issues you brought up about your team. I believe I handled them rationally.

In regards to finding out my IP. Let’s make a game of it. Any of the site admins can provide you with my IP. If you can get any of them to reveal it to you, I’d be surprised.

And really, I don’t want to call you.

When you go to somebody's house, you don't crap on their floor. Being a fan of one team does NOT give you license to be a dick to fans of another.

Corollary: When people are visiting your house and behaving themselves, them being a fan of a different team is NOT a reason for you to piss in their beer.

And this one is just for spite:
You got my boy, now quit trolling! You got all hot and bothered when I gave you guy’s grief on your DN site. If it makes you feel any better, I think most of Packer Nation is rooting for Favre to win a Super Bowl.. So seeing you haven’t got anything better to do with your time, little man, get off of this site or so help me I will find your IP address and make your life miserable. Fixed, but that’s not all!

I have been a die-hard Packer fan sinceI was five years old and I am now 45. Did you ever want to jump through your TV screen and get on the sidelines to tell the Coach to use his imagination and learn how to call plays? Enough is enough. This B.S. has got to end . I hate to say it, but if we don’t finish this season with at least a 9-7 record then the staff has got to be let go. Until the Board of Directors get off their collective asses and fires Murphy, Thompson, and McCarthy, we can look forward to mediocrity for, who knows, another 20 years. I don’t know about Packer Nation, but you have got to realize there are too many egos in this front office. After all, if Bob Harlan had been in charge when the Favre Fiasco happened last year, you know well that he would have sided with Brett. But this goes deeper than Brett.

Aaron Rodgers is a capable quarterback. If the Packers don’t hire some veteran free agents to shore up the line, and I am not talking about Taush or Clifton (God bless ’em, but their playing days are over). Any Idiot knows the Game is won in the trenches. We need to get some Hogs up front and get rid of that pathetic zone blocking scheme. That scheme worked for one Super Bowl team, the Denver Broncos. Name one NFL team that has won a Super Bowl Game with a zone blocking scheme since.

And as far as McCarthy is concerned, It’s his responsibility bringing Capers in to have a 3-4 Defensive scheme. Now I am a fan of that scheme, but what the heck is going on? if we are not going to send the kitchen sink after good QB’s, we’re going to give them enough time to sit back there to light a smoke and have a Cocktail! Then why did we even bother bringing it in? The only thing I can think of, if you like a conspiracy theory, is that Capers’ is intentionally holding back the proper schemes so that McCarthy gets canned and Wa-lah! He becomes the next contestant on “Coach the Packers”.

Maybe we all should do what the Cleveland Brown fans did and stage a protest. I found McCarthy’s phone number on the Internet tonight, and if I wasn’t such a nice guy, I would have called him and told him to pull out all the stops. Use a Double Reverse, a half-back option, call flea-flickers, anything to take the pressure off of that pathetic offensive line. These guys get paid hundreds of thousands to millions to do what they are suppose to do, so excuse me if I don’t have any pity on any of them. Man up or get out of the league. No wonder why Brett left. I wouldn’t want to stand behind that line either.. I pray them over-paid cocky sons of beeches get this thing done, or we are going to be the Tampa Bay or Detroit’s of the league! Et cetera, you get the picture.

Later, I’m out of here.
