Packers considered a Superbowl contender?
I just found this blog a few months ago and have enjoyed it ever since. I enjoy the banter and the occasional bloggers from other teams
. But I was checking JSOnline and was happy to see a certain Sports anylist by the name of Rodney Harrison considered the pack a superbowl contender. In fact he put us in the top four in the NFC, with New Orleans, Minnesota, Philidelphia. Considering they were left for dead after the Tampa game and two losses to the Vikings.
If you look at the season up to this point even if you throw out the two losses to the Vikings, the Packers are a missed field goal, a desperation throw in the enzone, and a Tampa disaster from being in first place in the division. Our defence is #1 and our offense is #6 over all. We have the #5 QB in the NFL and arguably the best defensive player in Woodson. We have three contriuting rookies on the defence. Matthews can't say enough about him. Run stuffing Raji Wow he just gets better every week. And Jones who Knows? Our schedule is favorable and at the time of this writing Pittsburgh is losing to browns 13-zip at the half. Our O-Line has gotten alot better. Our special teams still suck but I think some of it is mental errors, same with the penalties.
I believe that some of the teams contending for the SB have hit a wall(New Orleans and Minnesota). In other words they're playing at the top of their game. The Vikings have alot of injuries 13 total. And I wonder if they're thinking they should have used the 12 million they spent on Favre and put that into their secondary? Romo say no more. New Orleans very tough. Phli also Battle tested but beatable. Cards beatable also. But with the Packers we don't know when that wall is to be hit because they have so much room for improvement, with all the young players. All we have to do is just make the playoffs and stay healthy and I think we have a chance. I would like to hear any comments. Bloggers from other teams are welcome also I would like to get their veiw also.

With the four wins in a row, I'm thinking we are a playoff team.
Not a Superbowl contender. The Defense has really come into it’s own. The predicted adjustment period to the 3-4 had them struggling and inconsistent. That seems to be behind them. The loss of Harris and Kampman will be felt against the better teams, that experience and athleticism cannot be replaced.
Th offensive line has been better. I still cross my fingers before every game that they can protect Rodgers. After the first half of the season, it is hard to trust them.
The problems that will hamper this team from going anywhere in the playoffs are special teams and the penalties. It has been harped on ad-nauseum on this board. These remain to be fixed. Field position and drive killing/extending penalties cannot be covered up against other playoff caliber teams.
Someone on here said it seems that they only have the ability to fix one thing at a time. First, the D seemed to get its act together, now the O-line, and hopefully next is special teams and/or penalties. Tramon Williams had some big PIs, but the frustrating thing was it wasn’t for a lack of being in position, just poor technique with the arm bar stuff.
The team has seemingly gotten better week to week, but that needs to continue to be able to make a mark should they land the wild card. Superbowl caliber, no not yet.
Some people say the glass is half empty, some say half full. I say, are you going to drink that?

I can
only hope. It is a long shot , but anything can happen in the NFL. The steelers loss to the Browns was kind of a shocker. Washington almost taking over the saints—- I was like—-wow. Minnisota getting beat by the Cards— and the Bengals coming in hot. We face a tough spoiler type Bears team so right now hope is all I got. For some reason I just can’t see past the Bears. McCarthy has them practicing indoors again ( I don’t know if he is using frozen footballs or not :-) ) .Special teams last December were horrible and in that game, that’s right, #24 Jerrett Bush (big suprise) missed a tackle on Danieal Manning’s 70-yard kick return. That kid is going to be the downfall of this team I swear :-). On the bright side though, the defense is night and day compaired to last year. The OL has improved. Rodgers is making good decisions and Woodson is playing like nothing short of superman. Everytime he steps onto the field he is a potential game changer.

I think we are one of those teams that no one will want to draw in the first round but I am no where near ready to call us a super bowl contender. Too much sloppy play (penalties) and poor special teams play. I still want to see us stop a really good DE from having sack-a-palosa as well before I am ready to say we’ve arrived!

Is DeMarcus Ware, Patrick Willis, Ngata
not good enough for you?? The line has really come together well the last couple weeks. A measure of how much they’ve improved will come this week against Ogunleye, who racked up 4 or 5 sacks working on Allen Barbre last time. He’s got Dough Boy Tausch this time, though…

Nope…I want to see a guy like Ogunleye who already did something get slowed down. I wish we had another shot at Jared Allen too to see if we’ve really improved.
I did specifically say DE, not NT and not LB which is what all those guys have been. For the record, Ngata was ALL OVER the place. He didn’t get sacks, but that isn’t his job. He was in on just about every run we had I think! Seems like we’ve been up against a lot of 3-4 lately so hopefully our changes will hold up against the 4-3 too!

To be fair
Ngata is a DE.
And pass protection against DeMarcus Ware is just as difficult as pass protection against Jarad Allen, and certainly Ogunleye. The line is not great, and just barely good, maybe not even good, but it is coming together.

Yeah
Considering Ware is the leading sacks leader over these past 3 years I would definitely say he is a legit test.

Again…the point was I wanted to see a 4-3 DE, vs a 3-4 Linebacker. Our guys are facing 3-4 LBs in practice all day so I am less worried there. I wanted to see a different scheme before I was a complete believer. The teams that throttled us this year in sacks were ALL 4-3 teams (Vikings x2, Bengals, Bears). Those were the ones that stand out where they had a guy put up HUGE sack numbers. We faced the Bears again this week and it was a different game for the Oline so I am believing that they got things fixed up now…

Agreed
You make a valid point. It’s interesting because we have struggled against the 4-3 much more then we have against the 3-4. I thought we did a pretty good job against Chicago on protection. I believe the sacks they did have came off of blitzes, not that, that excuses them but the first time we played Chicago the majority of their sacks and pressures came from them just rushing 4 down lineman.

Turd and TrevorR
you guys are right. Turd you are right with not looking past the Bears. They can play spoiler against a heated rival of course they are going to be tough. And really we should not be over looking them and thinking playoffs yet. Lets secure the spot first. We may have won 4 straight and be a confident team and fanbase but that all can change if the team lets it go to their heads and we drop winable games at the Bears or at Pitt. We do have some problems that we can improve on and be a fierce team, so lets hope these problems can be limited and get into the playoffs first then we can be talking about a superbowl push

You have to reference the 2007 Giants and the 2008 Cards. Both wild card teams
Also the 97 Broncos. Defence wins Championships. When Tampa and Baltimore won, they won with defence not because of their offences. But I agree 1 game at a time and get into the playoffs. A win against the Bears and a Giants loss would be good. We have tie breaker against Dallas.
