Brief Recap: Green Bay Packers Defeat Bears 21-14
It was a close game for the Green Bay Packers, the Bears led 14-13 at the end of the 3rd quarter. But a big INT by FS Nick Collins early in the 4th quarter turned the game around, and set up the Packers' go ahead TD.
The game was close in large part because QB Aaron Rodgers (16 of 24 for 180 yards with 0 TD, 0 INT) had an unremarkable game. Two Packer turnovers in Chicago territory, and a missed FG by K Mason Crosby, also took points off the board.
But it was overall a solid game for the Packers. The special teams didn't allow any big returns and it was the Bears (instead of the penalty prone Packers) who committed a mountain of penalties. RB Ryan Grant's first play from scrimmage was a 62 yard TD run, and he overall ran the ball well. The defense allowed 2 TD scoring drives, but they were in control for the rest of the game.
Not a dominant performance against a lesser team, but the most important thing is to keep on winning. I'll post a detailed recap early tomorrow morning.

I can't believe the refs missed the Jennings TD by a mile, even on the review
that would’ve changed the whole game
the loss of Pickett hurt too, but we won!
See, this is what happens when the Sox bunt.

I suspect someone will get a talking to this week
Apparently 2 feet + possession in bounds does NOT constitute a catch 100% of the time…

Ref musta been a Bears fan
Totally disgusted with that call. It was clear that Jennings lost possession of that football AFTER two steps and that the football was knocked out of his hands, so it wasn’t like a bobbled catch. That call could have been a difference maker in what was a closely contested game.

the ref seemed to have troubles all game
If anyone else caught it, early in the game after a penalty. He couldnt remember the down saying 2nd then 3rd then a mix of 2nd and 3rd and then finally 3rd while still holding two fingers up. He didnt work his mic right have the time and their was another call he fumbled his words with.

Ruling of a catch ...
AdamA … you and all others who complain about this pass being ruled incomplete (and upheld after further review…) obviously have not read the rules (or to be 100% correct, the interpretations/ approved ruling on complete/incomplete passes) neither have you seen the official review segment with Mike Pereira on NFL total access, he has explained this situation a couple of times. I also think Mike Carey did an excellent job of explaining it on the field, yes he did screw up the rest of his anouncement, but there was aslo defensive offside on the play, and it is easy to get a bit confused, the important thing, they got the down and distance correct right away, before the ball was declared ready for play again.
The rule/approved ruling, clearly states, that a reciever going to the ground must maintain possession all the way to the ground (in other word, the ground can cause an incompletion) now, on this play, while Jennings clearly gets his second foot down in the endzone with his hands on the ball, imediatly upon that, the ball is knocked loose as the defenders tackles him, thereby a correct call. Now, on the tv replay, in SLOW-motion, it looks like a catch, in real time, it happens instantly (ps, the game is not played in slow-mo).
So according to the rule, this is correct all the way. You are of course, free to like or dislike this rule as any other.
But before you dislike it too much, let’s say this happened in the field of play, I’m quite sure you would like to have this ruled an incomplete pass instead of catch-fumble.
That is the reason the approved ruling is the way it is, to avoid cheap turnovers. It also makes it a much easier call for the officials, it takes out all judgement.
All in all, I think the officials worked this game very well, no missed big calls, and no ghost-calls, the total number of penalties were high, but acceptable, since they were all correct calls.
Now for the rest of the game, again, thank you defense ! the defense came through when needed. I would also like to extend some gratitude to Culter and C.Williams of the Bears, they made some really big mistakes helping the Packers win this one!
The offense in general, did not play a very good game, two possessions in the redzone in the first half ended in FGs and not TDs, the game should have been put away early in the 2nd qtr.
Grant had his best game (overall) of the season, which is good, but if we look away from that big first run (where the Bears D obviously blew some assignements) his numbers are not that great, but stil ok.
Rodgers did not play very well, holding the ball too long in certain situtations, especially that double fumble play, where Rodgers tried really hard to do a Garo Yepremian impression. There was also that situation were a Bears LB (Briggs or Hillenmeyer, don’t remember now..) came clean of a delayed blitzed, it could have been a read-blitz as well, that’s not important, the important part is there must have been either a blown blocking assignement by Havner or a horrible protection call by Rodgers, impossible for us to say which is correct. What happens is that Tauscher (and the rest of the line) clearly downblocks, pushing the d-line to the left, so that looks to be the sceem, then the whole rigth side is exposed, which means you need someone to hold that ground, either Havner did not hear the protection call or Rodgers called the wrong sceem.
The defense started out great, shutting down the Bears completly early in the game, yes they did fall into sleep-mode for a while in the 3rd qtr, which could have hurt much more vs a better team. They did wake up and get their heads on straight when they need too.
I’m a lot more worried about the offenses inability to put a game away when they have the opportunity, it’s been that way most of this season (and last season as well) this time it took a big interception and return for Collins to set up the final TD, but even after that the offense also failed to move the ball and put the final nail in the coffin.
Yes, there was also that missed 42-yd FG attempt, wheter or not there was tricky winds or if he expected the wind to blow the ball right to left, Crosby blew that one. Other than that, specialteams played ok for once.

the time the ball was “knocked loose” he was already out of the end zone in the stands practically. He DID maintain possesion the ENTIRE time he was IN the endzone. The anouncers were shocked, everyone knew that was a TD

turd...
you need to read the rulebook as well ..
Jennings had the ball in his hands, one foot down, 2nd foot down, and just before his first foot hit the ground (still in the ez) for the second time, the ball comes loose. Even though he had both feet down in the ez, before the ball came loose, this is NOT a catch, the receiver must maintain full control of the ball all the way to the ground, when he imediatly falls (or is tackled /pulled) to the ground upon first catching the ball. I don’t think this would have been ruled a TD even if he had control when the “third foot” hit the ground as well, since the ball came loose before he hit the ground. If this had happened in the field of play, it would have been ruled the same way, since he was not able to make a “football move” while in possession (falling to the ground and maintaining control is considered a footballmove) the same principle apply in the endzone
“Everyone” as you refer too, must of course be everyone except; the BJ who made the (correct) initial call on the field, Mike Carey (the Ref) who upheld/confirmed the call after further review/ (MM Challenge). me, and everyone else who actually know the rules.
Yes the anouncers were shocked, but like one of them said, “his opinion doesn’t count”. the anouncers are very often wrong about the rules, what actually surprised me a bit, was that Mike Pereira or an official supervisor didn’t call the booth and explained it to them (and then have them correct it on air), maybe that was because Carey explained it in very clear and simple terms after his review. I do not know how much clearer he could have explained it. Neither do I understand why some fans think they know the rules better than the officials who spend hours every day studying the rules and are paid $100,000 + /year to officiate.
I’m sorry that you fail to see that, but that is the way the rule/approved ruleing is, if you don’t like it, feel free to complain to the NFL Competition committe. (or Mike Pereira)
If you still don’t believe me, go to NFL.com, check out the official review videos from this season, I know similar situations have been explained, but I don’t remember which week. I will try to find it and post a link later today.

That rule has to do with
possession and going to the ground. Jennings did not go to the ground and he maintained possession through the filed of play. The packers organization is taking it up with the commission as they should. Here is a press conference excerpt.
MM press conference: (Were you satisfied with the explanation on the Jennings incompletion in the end zone?)
I thought Mike Carey did a good job communicating, but we’ll go through the normal process there. We’ll take the game, and that will probably be one of the plays we’ll talk about with the league office and we’ll have further communication. We participate in that procedure every week. But I thought the group as a whole, the crew, did a very good job explaining everything.
(But you challenged it because you thought he had two feet in before …)
Yeah, I challenged it because I thought it was a touchdown and I would have liked to have seen it be a touchdown, but it doesn’t always go that way.
The packers ARE taking it up with the NFL Competition committe. If that pass came from the Favre to Harvin it would have been ruled a TD so give me a break on officiating

I didn't see the game but was it similar to the Baltimore game
where we collapsed in the 3rd quarter?
by Charlie Kelly on Dec 13, 2009 3:44 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
The collapse arguably happened in the 1st quarter
When we settled for 2 FGs instead of TDs. Then the offense fell, then the defense fell, and it took us waiting for the inevitable Cutler mistake to win the game.
Flat, flat, flat, but still a win, and something we needed to get ourselves ready to face the Black ’n Gold in their house.

Well, if we look flat,
I’d rather have it happen in a game that we can still win even if we are playing flat as opposed to a game in which playing flat will cost us (see second Minnesota game, first half).
A win is a win is a win.
And it’s our first season sweep of the Bears since 2003.

Tramon Williams had a much better game today,
no pass interference calls and much tighter coverage. Bush blew a number of plays in this game, again proving he is not a capable backup. Also liked watching Grant burst threw holes today and show so pop at the point of attack.

Good job in the fourth,
when it really matters.
It was a close game for the Green Bay Packers, the Bears led 14-13 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
Nice 4th quarter come-from-behind win, both for the team, and for the oft-criticized-for-not-doing-so-last-year Aaron Rodgers, the new Leader of the Pack.
And what a far cry from last year’s defense in holding down the win after the offense’s comeback.
Five in a row;
now, let’s go get it done in Pittsburgh!

A 4th quarter comeback still counts as a 4th quarter comeback, no matter how it is accomplished.
It sure always did for Old What’s-’is-name.
Also, pointing out the difference in re to the defense not blowing it after Rodgers did his job (in getting them into the end zone and then, getting the 2 points on the conversion).
Many of last year’s losses were a result of the defense giving it right back again.

Haven't seen this mentioned
but my friends and I were at the game today and we were absolutely baffled with Lovie Smith. Fourth quarter Jay Cutler makes a nice pass to the receiver (can’t remember right now if it was Knox or Aromashodu). He caught it, but when he came down he lost control and it fell incomplete. Lovie burns one timeout so his staff can get a better look at it and then loses a second timeout when he loses the challenge. He used his 3rd a minute later to stop the clock. That 2 minute drill would have looked a lot different if he had one or possibly two of those timeouts. We got into the stadium just in time to see Ryan Grant take it to the house on the first possession for the Packers on the day. A little more nervous than most of my friends here in Chicago wanted me to believe, but a W is a W.

For a while
this looked like your pretty standard Green Bay at Chicago game. Packers move the ball on offense, make lots of stops on defense but then we throw up all over ourselves to lose the game in the fourth quarter. That didn’t happen today and these guys deserve alot of credit when everything isn’t going great. Last time we swept the Bears was 2003.

Dallas loss plus Packer win is not a clinch
Due to the fact that Dallas would still be able to win their division, a Dallas loss plus a Packer win would not be an auto clinch. I’m not sure how the tie brakers are in the NFC East but a Packers win + Eagles win + Dallas loss may do it. Pack win + Giants loss does it for sure. Still, it’s encouraging that we’re talking about clinching possibilities in week 15.
