Chillar Gets Contract Extension

Chillar Extension

From Brandon: Oops...I should have checked the FanPosts before I wrote one about Chillar myself. Thanks for getting it posted quickly (much quicker than I did) and for all the comments.

Star-divide

Call me a little surprised only b/c we haven't heard his name much this year, but apparently he is doing something right and will remain a Packer for at least the next 4 more years. Just to me seems like a lot of money to be giving to a guy that seems like he is stuck behind a few others. I'm wondering if this is a for sure sign that Aaron Kampmann won't be returning next season.

Yes on Kampman

There is no way they keep Kampman. I wonder if GB likes Chillar as a replacement for Jones or Hawk next year? Or do they just like his depth/special teams play.

I like him, but this is a little confusing. I hope they lock up Collins.

Yeah, really

Plus, he’s like a poor man’s Ed Reed.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

It's a good idea to extend his contract

He is our best cover linebacker and definitely is a contributor to the team.

But it raises a question: is that the priority? Shouldn’t they sign Collins first and than look for other extensions?

Regarding Kampman, I feel we’re going to be very sorry if we just let him go like that. We can get really good value for him in a trade, so I’d hate to see him sign someplace else as a FA.

Regarding Kampman

I also would have said that we need to franchise Kampman and trade him because he has good value but after the knee injury his value will certainly be diminished. I don’t want to see him walk away for nothing either, but I wonder whether or not we can get “good value” for him or not at this point.

Can anyone give me a straight answer

on whether the Packers are eligible to Franchise Kampman?

I definitely think a Tag-n-Trade is appropriate for Kampman (ala Corey Williams) due to his being a misfit in the new 34 system, but still having pro-bowl level value in any 43 defense. However, I’ve heard several folks say the Pack’s unable to use the Franchise tag on Kampman, but they never give a clear rationale why.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give me a clear answer on this issue.

Agree that his knee injury is very likely to create issues with getting him traded for picks in time for ’10 draft.

by 400metres on Dec 15, 2009 4:43 PM CST up reply actions

Of course they can tag him. Anyone telling you otherwise is incorrect.

by TrevorR on Dec 15, 2009 6:05 PM CST up reply actions

that would rely on someone

wanting to take a franchise-sized contract when he’s coming off an injury. i don’t think we’re going to get much for him. lots of risk signing him to anything. his value’s way down and it’s too bad but i’m not sure there’s much we could’ve done about it. we weren’t ready to move on this year at the start of the year w/o him.

by Cervercero on Dec 15, 2009 7:02 PM CST up reply actions

you would think we would be working on other contracts..

Why have we still not resigned Collins? Besides that Chillar is a good back up by $21 mil? Seems a little step for a guy that is on the outside looking in for major playing time. With the youth and talent our LBs have I dont think he needed to get paid that much. It is good that we did resign him since he does have great cover skills and is a nice veteran but I dont think he is worth 21 mil at this point in his career

by bizzle4 on Dec 14, 2009 12:28 PM CST reply actions

Be Patient.

I imagine you’ll see exactly why this deal was inked, but maybe not until next year. This could be an offseason where the Packers start making some noise in hopes to elevate the team to the next level. I’m finding comfort in this unexpected move. Ted has certainly let a couple of veteran guys walk out the door, and getting Chillar in ink shows that he’s still going to be active in the near future.

To be fair, I know that most of our (you, me, everyone on this blog) biggest fear is that the front office just sits around and wastes this young and talented team, without ever making some moves to put it over the top. Right?

by StephanL on Dec 14, 2009 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

Patience is the key i guess...

The only thing I dont like about the signing was the money he is getting. A ST and situational player seems to have a hefty price tag. In a uncapped year next year I would guess this will not hurt us, but what about 2011? When the contract is broken down it is only $14 mil after the gurantee but he is still making $3.5 per year which to me seems like a lot for a backup and especially with the rookies stepping up and playing very well

by bizzle4 on Dec 14, 2009 5:43 PM CST up reply actions

Collins

Think of it this way: He’s a restricted FA if there’s no cap next year, which is likely. They can franchise him at ~$6 m if there is a cap. I agree he’s top priority but I think we have ways to mitigate the risk right now. We have ways to make sure he’s a Packer next year regardless.

by Cervercero on Dec 15, 2009 7:06 PM CST up reply actions

Confused as well...

To be honest, I didn’t even know Chillar was still considered a starter after not hearing his name most of the season. LOL Good for him if he can be productive.

On Kampmann, I have a feeling he’ll walk. He’s very unhappy about the new defensive scheme and struggles a lot in coverage. He was a stud in the old defense and now just seems like he is just another face in the lineup.

I may not be giving him enough credit, but it just feels thats the way it will go.

by pvilleWIcheezhed on Dec 14, 2009 2:02 PM CST reply actions

The thing with Kampman

his injury could not have come at a worse time for him…Just like Tauscher last year. He may find the market hard pressed to sign a guy that probably wont be healthy when the season starts. So he could easily be a sign and trade guy for the pack. Or even resigned try to continue the experiment at OLB or the injury could put him back on the line for the pack

by bizzle4 on Dec 14, 2009 5:24 PM CST up reply actions

Someone in Kampman’s position would probably be THRILLED to get tagged next year considering the injury.

4 years $12 mill isn’t crazy money. They clearly see him as someone that will important going forward so signing him up before he becomes a STUD is smart football. I think he has a LOT of potential and given the chance I could see this guy helping to anchor that D. I think this is a sign of things to come and his future with the franchise. I am positive that Collins will get his big deal…he’s one of the top 3 performers on that defense so those kinds of contracts take a lot of work and negotiating!

by TrevorR on Dec 14, 2009 6:16 PM CST up reply actions

but if you look

both the DL and OL have alot of guys that have expiring contracts… Jolly,Pickett, Spitz, colledge, Clifton… Along with Bigby, Tramon, Kuhn. I would rather get the guys that are key to future success and immediate success signed before worrying about a back up.
With the OL contracts the Pack maybe lucky enough that they wouldnt have to cut anyone or lose money after the year they can just release them, but with a time where contracts might be big with the uncapped year this off season I would rather try signing the play makers right now than the back ups.

by bizzle4 on Dec 14, 2009 8:21 PM CST up reply actions

Uncapped Year

I read an article saying a lot of players in Collins draft class (05 Draft) are having trouble getting extensions because their free agency status depends on the uncapped year. If there is no new CBA, that class becomes restricted free agents, but if there is a new CBA they become unrestricted free agents. Apparently a lot of teams (apparently the Packers are one of these teams) are playing hardball with the players and banking on the lack of CBA because it lets restricted freeagency to determine the worth of the player and then they can try to sign the offer sheet to match and then work out a long term deal. I’m just worried Collins is going to feel slighted and not want to return to the Pack or only do so if they overpay. Dallas extened Demarcus Ware because they saw him as a franchise player much like we did with Rodgers (same draft class), and I think this needs to be the stance taken with Collins.

I think they waited to make sure Collins was for real and that he’d work in this system. Last year was his first BIG year and even last year he was up and down. He had a ton of INTs early and then kinda faded away. I think they wanted to make sure he would progress into the kind of play he wanted to be paid as before they gave him the big bucks.

TT isn’t elcheapo with HIS guys…at least not from past history.

by TrevorR on Dec 14, 2009 11:07 PM CST up reply actions

Hmm

I like Chillar, and he is very valuable to us in passing situations, and was excelling in our system until he was sidelined by an injury but I would much rather see Collins, Pickett, and Jolly signed before him. I really hope we re-sign those 3 guys.

by packallday555 on Dec 14, 2009 10:57 PM CST reply actions

Doubtful we'll see both Pickett and Jolly

I think one of them will be re-signed, but not both. Collins will be re-signed depending on what happens with the CBA. But I think it depends on the case with Jolly (remember the whole drug charge thing was postponed until after the season), if he gets in any sort of legal trouble and suspended, then Pickett will be re-signed. Otherwise, why bother keeping around an older dude who’s going to demand a lot more money, when Jolly’s play is on the rise and Raji is going to step in as a starter at Pickett’s spot? I feel pretty comfortable with the front three being Jenkins-Raji-Jolly going forward.

I don’t necessarily disagree with this but having 4 guys in a rotation that all have the ability to start is a HUGE advantage. Wynn and Montgomery can fill the rotation but neither of them necessarily fit the 3-4 defense too well.

I forgot about Jolly’s legal issues, thanks for bringing that up. I remember hearing the charges against him were dropped and then I heard a little after that they were going to be brought back up after the season. Anybody know what one it really is?

by packallday555 on Dec 15, 2009 6:20 PM CST up reply actions

It seems like people are confounded by this

I’m not. This seems pretty close to what Chillar would get on the open market. It’s important to remember that we aren’t talking about Brewers and Bucks contracts here. The Packers have zero revenue problems and a shitload of cap room. TT may have been cheap in the past but a big reason for that was the size of our free agent class this year. I wouldn’t worry about resigning Colledge or Spitz, but Kampman is probably gone either by free agency or trade. I think that’s just the best for both sides. In a way it’s actually pretty nice to see TT opening up the pursestrings after his frugalness (frugality?) on the free agent market.

by Donald Driver on Dec 15, 2009 1:04 AM CST reply actions

Bingo

Thompson was very fiscally conservative and for that we were lashing out quite a bit, but everyone forgets that all those rookies we draft will have their contracts expire and they need to get paid so that we can keep them through their prime. Every decent player in the NFL is going to see at least three contracts depending on how good they are. Basically, it’s like this..

Age 21-25, good four year contract to prove themselves worthy of playing in the league. Guys like Rodgers get signed to longer term deals, guys like Jarrett Bush can find themselves gone.
Age 26-31, prime years, usually lock someone up for 3-5 years here depending on position. If they turn out to be extremely valuable and consistent producers and contribute to playoff success, as well as staying healthy, you keep em. The Raiders made a huge error in judgment by betting the wrong way on Charles Woodson here, who was 30 years old when he signed with Green Bay.
Age 32-??, it all depends on position, injuries, and importance to the franchise. Obviously kickers, punters, quarterbacks and sometimes receivers last longest here. Rare is the old veteran linebacker, lineman, or defensive back who can play well into this age, and those are guys who are consistent producers and can keep up with the stronger and faster players that come into the league. Guys like Ray Lewis make it here, guys like Derrick Brooks hold out here as much as they can, and guys like Brady Poppinga shouldn’t be here.

Not just that

but how cool is it for our franchise, our little upstart franchise in the middle of nowhere, WI (compared to the rest of the league’s cities), owned by the fans and yadda yadda yadda, to have players that can play for the whole length of their careers in Green Bay? One of the things that irks me about the Free Agent era (well not like I was following football before then) is how some players switch teams so often that you can’t get guys who identify with a franchise anymore. But then you have guys like Donald Driver, Chad Clifton, Mark Tauscher, Nick Barnett, and yes Aaron Kampman, who all have 6 years or more of playing the NFL and all of whom have played their entire careers with the Green Bay Packers. All of whom except for maybe Kampman who will likely finish their careers with Green Bay as well.

I love that.

by vitaminx on Dec 15, 2009 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, and $3 mil for Chillar is about right. Collins will get 7 or 8.

Jeez, remember when Reggie White’s whole contract was for 18 million? …and that was considered HUGE for a d-lineman.

by Curly Lambeau on Dec 15, 2009 2:06 PM CST reply actions

One thing we should all remember

Before we start getting too up in arms over how much this is or anything, this is a pretty damn good move for the LB corps. Obviously Capers sees something in him that a lot of us don’t quite yet, but just remember what happened a few years ago when Kampman was an RFA and signed a big offer sheet with Minnesota, which the Packers were able to match and keep him, but it killed our cap space (thanks to The Sherm). I like that Ted Thompson is proactive in extending players’ contracts in the middle of the year and not waste so much time in the offseason with player negotiations, which is why I’m hopeful Collins will be signed to a contract before the FA market gets wild this offseason.

by vitaminx on Dec 15, 2009 5:13 PM CST reply actions

I think the point with Collins is that if a new CBA doesn’t get signed and its uncapped, Collins will become restricted.

Either way though, I think he’ll get his soon…they are probably both just playing hard with each other and eventually his will come. There is NO way TT will let a young, athletic safety that is one of the cornerstones of his D go. If he’s anything, he’s VERY protective of HIS guys and that is what Collins is.

by TrevorR on Dec 15, 2009 6:07 PM CST up reply actions

exactly

I would be shocked — shocked! — if TT let Collins go.

Off topic~~ LB related

You guys remember Abdoul Hodge? Whatever happened to him? He was suppose to be better than Barnett and then got hurt and I never heard anything else about him..I know hes not on the team anymore. But I dont even remember seeing him in preseason so I dont know if it was this year, last or two years ago when we got rid of him

by bizzle4 on Dec 17, 2009 9:46 AM CST reply actions

Pretty sure he is on the Bengals. I never heard he was better then Barnett though. I always heard he was a BIG hitter but didn’t have the speed. I think we got rid of him 2 or 3 years ago when we got rid of him.

by packallday555 on Dec 17, 2009 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

Hodge is a Bengal. He’s done virtually NOTHING with them…here is what his Wiki page says:

Hodge appeared in six games for the Bengals, recording three tackles, before being placed on injured reserve with an arm injury on November 17.

by TrevorR on Dec 17, 2009 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

thanks guys

I just really too lazy too look anything up… But 555 I thought I remember hearing Barnett saying he would switch to OLB back when Hodges hype was up, his rookie year. But I could be wrong it was a few years ago. Just kinda thought about today instead of studying.. About hyped or actually good LBs we have had

by bizzle4 on Dec 17, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

Oh really? That could have been the case. I thought I remembered reading an article when he was let go that said we felt like he was too slow to play MLB.
