WR Patrick Williams Signed From The Practice Squad
The Green Bay Packers made a roster move: signing WR Patrick Williams from the practice squad and releasing WR Biren Ealy. Here's what I wrote about the two receivers back in October:
As to the two receivers signed: WR Patrick Williams was barely mentioned here at all after a quiet preseason, but he should be familiar with the offense and have a short learning curve. WR Biren Ealy worked with the Saints and Ravens so far this season, but spent time dropping passes for the Titans in 2008.
I'm not really sure why they need a 6th WR on the active roster. There are a couple other guys on the roster, T Breno Giacomini and S Matt Giordano, who don't seem to fill a need on the roster either. Not that they especially need a 3rd QB or a 4th RB, but why did they let go of guys like QB Brian Brohm and RB Tyrell Sutton, and keep other guys like Giacomini, Giordano, and Williams?

6 WRs? I suppose if you count Finley…
I still don’t understand the obsession with Tyrell Sutton. What would he have to offer? He wouldn’t take snaps from Grant, and he’s so tiny he’d really have to prove his worth blocking-wise to be utilized on 3rd downs. Personally I think Jackson is doing a fine job there.
And I don’t know what worth Brian Brohm would ever have in Green Bay. By all accounts, the Packers are happy with Flynn as a back-up. Unless Brohm offers some magic FG-holding dimension that makes Crosby’s kicks tail in from the right hash, he’s of little use now. And until his performance surpasses Flynn’s, he’s of little use in the future.
Godspeed...

Yes, it's only 5 WR
No I wasn’t counting Finley. There’s been just enough movement at the bottom of the WR depth chart this season (release Martin, IR for Swain, Nelson missed a couple games) that I messed up the count in my head. It makes more sense to add Williams since he’s only No. 5.

if ya want to get real nit picky, he would make six if you consider Brett Swain on IR. Let me count once :) Driver Jennings Jones Nelson SWAIN and now da da da #6 Patrick williams!!!! Hey, I did it!!!

what about Quinn Johnson?
I’ve noticed he was inactive last week. It seems that he would be helpful to have, especially late in the game when you are grinding out yards.

6?
6th wide receiver? I only count 5. Driver, Jennings, Jones, Nelson, and now Williams.
And I’ve got no problem with keeping an O-line prospect for as long as they think he’s still developing. A good o-lineman takes years to get ready. If you really watch one of those guys and how precise every little move has got to be, and how they’ve got to react flawlessly to what the defender does… It’s as complex of a skill set as any in football. Technique is everything. And they’ve got to do it all while engaged in full contact, unlike any of the other skill guys.
Now why they had to keep 3 fullbacks, that one I don’t know the answer to.
Brohm was a chump, though, at least for us. …which, y’know, who knew? Hope he does well somewhere else, but I’m okay with Ted cutting bait on him.

Why is there a picture of DeAngelo Williams attached to this article?

Must have auto tagged him or something…weird!

Terrell Sutton
is in the background, gettin’ grabby with DeAngelo’s helmet. Sutton played a bit in the backfield when Williams was hurt, and he’s also been returning some kicks for Carolina.
& don’t read this article, Thompson haters: it looks like Carolina is pretty damn pleased with the player they claimed off of the Green Bay Packers.

Tyrell is a player that looks like a bad move with the injuries we've had
Tyrell would have been a great replacement for the kick return game after Will Blackmon went down. The triple headed FB monster seemed questionable at the time, but even more so since John Kuhn got hurt. As a NU fan, I’m just happy he’s playing. I just wish I could root for him on Sundays.

All those Panthers look alike
Oops. Sutton was in the caption, when I searched for a photo of him this is what came up, but I didn’t realize it was actually Williams in the front.

They
might just keep some guys for practice and scout teams. If they do really well, then they get a shot at being bumped up to active roster. I do think a third FB is nessesary though, only because they run sets with 2 FB

Brohm is a creeper anyway.
I bounce at anduzzies in appleton, the guy goes up behind girls, stands there and stares down at them. Not moving or anything.

Easy explanation.
I’m not really sure why they need a 6th WR on the active roster. There are a couple other guys on the roster, T Breno Giacomini and S Matt Giordano, who don’t seem to fill a need on the roster either. Not that they especially need a 3rd QB or a 4th RB, but why did they let go of guys like QB Brian Brohm and RB Tyrell Sutton, and keep other guys like Giacomini, Giordano, and Williams?
Answer: Special Teams. Brohm and Sutton weren’t needed because the former wasn’t good enough to be on an NFL roster, and the latter isn’t McCarthy’s kind of player. I don’t think he differentiates between fullbacks and halfbacks on the roster, just running backs, but specifically what do each of them offer? Grant is the primary back, with Jackson and Green spelling him on occasion and also on 3rd down, Johnson is the bruiser FB, Kuhn and Hall are both decent receivers but more importantly pick up blitzes very well. What does Sutton bring to the team there that the 3rd down backs don’t, aside from not being able to pick up blitzes well?
Having a good amount of receivers and a guy like Matt Giordano (who is lightning quick but not good at safety, so totally suited for special teams) is good for our special teams. I believe Giacomini plays on the return teams as well, having these guys around help keep our starters fresh for non-ST downs.
Hell, maybe this Pat Williams kid will start returning kicks so Jordy can stay fresh for receiving downs?

But...
Our special teams haven’t exactly been good either so it doesn’t seem to be working too well.

I wouldnt blame that all on talent, some of its coaching
TT did set aside quite a few players for ST, which brings me to another issue
I thought Mathews was a ST beast, one of the reasons we got him, but I have yet to see him play in there yet
he might help…

He probably would be but it would be kind of silly for us to risk him getting hurt on kickoffs.

And since when
does a team waste a 1st round pick on a ST player? I wouldnt want to see him out on ST with the attributes he brings to the D…

That's not the point.
The point is is that we need bodies for kick and punt coverage rather than wasting roster spots on guys we can get on by without.
And besides, the notion that it doesn’t SEEM to be working well is dispelled when you look at the fact that the players are just getting signed now. In other words, these are moves to bolster the kick coverage teams, and perhaps the returners as well.

Only 5 WR
Not sure why you think there are 6 WR on the Packers roster. Finley is a TE.
