Favre and Childress at odds...

I ran into this article today online at one of the local papers here in MN today:

http://blogs.twincities.com/Vikings/2009/12/favre-and-childress-issues.html

Apparently Childress tried to pull Favre in the third to go another direction and he and Favre got into a "heated discussion"...guess who won? Favre finished the entire game. Seems to be yet another december slide going on with Favre, I think we all warned the Vikings about this. After 10+ games of in your face BS, its coming to a head. I have a little bit of a smile on my face about it.

Would have been nice to have closed the gap to 1 game for the division yesterday though...ugh.

Too bad Favre wasn't back in Green Bay this year

He’d have intercepted that Roethlisberger pass.

Doesn't Chilldress understand?

This is Brett Favre’s team. It was the second he surrendered his dignity and reputation with the team by begging Favre to come to MN. Favre needs to be the one making all the decisions all the time. Chilldress can’t start acting like he is the one making any decisions now cuz he clearly isn’t. Accept reality Chilldress.

the minute he started bending over backwards to get him out there, that was when Favre decided he wanted to do it…another coach to control. ;-)

I don’t think anyone knows who’s running that show.Chilly needs to check the front of his pants on the inside cause I think he lost something.

Whatever...

… if I were Mr. Noodle, I’d be more bothered by the fact that Favre called me “Brad” in the press conference instead of coach than I was by the fact that Favre got pissed and insisted on playing when I tried to hook him in the 3rd quarter.

There next conversation should start with “My name is Coach…” but that horse is probably long out of the barn.

Besides, pulling Favre was an idiot move anyway. That win would have been huge for the Vikings, and they were up 7-6 at the time. You don’t pull your stud QB in the 3rd quarter when he’s thrown 0 picks that game (at that time) and you’ve got a lead, particularly when your back up is Jackson, who hasn’t exactly shown a knack for performing under pressure. They signed Favre. If they didn’t sign him to play games like last night, then why did they bother?

Every time I get concerned that the Vikings might win a titled, I remind myself that Chilly is their coach and that he has a difficult time getting out of his own way. It’s tough to win a title with a coach like that.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

It was definitely a stupid call but that's not the point

Pulling your starter with a 1 point lead nearing the 4th quarter of a game you need to win to have a chance to win home-field advantage is certainly ridiculous. But that’s why he’s Brad Childress. The issue is that Favre demonstrated that he has zero respect for Childress by refusing to do what he ordered. McKinnie was benched in the game too. I guess his biggest mistake was listening to Childress…unless Brett told McKinnie to take a seat. Then its a whole different story.

Agree and disagree

Pulling Favre was a dumb idea. At the time, the Vikes were leading, and had a decent shot at homefield advantage. Yeah, they had pretty much stunk, but pull your starting QB, with the lead, late in the season? WTF?? Bench McKinnie for Hicks? Really? How about give McKinnie help with Kleinsasser or Dugan? What he decided to do, apparently, was invoke the Mike McCarthy strategy for dealing wioth Jared Allen. It worked as well for Chilly as it did for MM.

As for the ’I’m the coach’ speech, that high ground was ceded to Favre when Chilly was his personal driver from the airport to the practice field in August.

I think this whole thing was way overblown anyway, and if the Vikes weren’t getting ready to play on MNF, I don’t think ESPN would be leading with this at the top of every hour. I mean, it’s either the Favre-Childress non-story, or…Jay Cutler and his 25 reasons why his interceptions aren’t his fault.

As to Chilly and his ability…well, he’s not Rich Kotite. In all seriousness, he’s gotten better in each season, which is a plus. The big strike against him is Tarvaris Jackson. He was billed as a QB guru, and his hand picked guy he gave up on and brought in Favre to save his job.

He called his offense ‘kick ass’ at the end of 2006 when it got it’s ass kicked more often than not, but once he got a top QB, it has been, for the most part. It will be interesting to see what happens when Favre isn’t around. That might be 2017, but he will eventually retire.

Has Childress really gotten better?

Or has his team? His offense when he first got there was bad, then he was lucky enough to land AP in the draft and since then his incredible talent has hid Childress’ bad playcalling.

by Charlie Kelly on Dec 24, 2009 2:01 PM CST up reply actions

A coach is as good as his talent

When he got here, he had Brad Johnson as his QB, and the starting WR’s were Travis Taylor and Troy Williamson, who couldn’t catch a cold standing naked and dripping wet on the North Pole. I don’t think he did a good job of adapting his system to the talent he had when he got to Minnesota, but he’s done an excellent job of getting talent in that can work well in his system.

Childress has his moments, like Sunday night in Carolina, but the team has gotten better each year he’s been here, and are back to back division champions since the end of the Purple People Eaters era, and that counts for something.

Has there been ANY team that has a GM that has been willing to put his money on the line like Ziggy though? Think of the money they’ve spent on FA talent since Brad has been there. I think its about 75% him getting the talent and about 25% of him. That is just my take living here in MN though.

by TrevorR on Dec 24, 2009 9:19 PM CST up reply actions

Washington prints their own money

near as I can tell, and are a prime example of money not translating into success. Just because you have an owner that spends money doesn’t mean you’re going to be successful on a field.

by Ted Glover on Dec 25, 2009 7:18 PM CST up reply actions

The talent they spend $ on is questionable though. Allen and Hutchinson weren’t viewed by many as risks like Haynesworth and Hall were. Do you really think your team was 10-6 in part because of Childress or 10-6 at his expense last year? He just doesn’t seem like the smartest guy, and I think it’s fairly obvious the reason you will have won at least 11 games this year is because of Favre. I guess we’ll see when Favre leaves how things turn out, and how people’s opinions on Childress change or don’t change. Should be interesting.

by packallday555 on Dec 26, 2009 12:21 AM CST up reply actions

Now you're changing your premise

The question was is there any GM spends money like Zygi has, and I gave you Washington. Now you say that can’t count because they bring in crappy talent? It’s not Minnesota’s fault that they’ve brought in quality talent and Dan Snyder plays fantasy football with real players.

Yeah, I think Minnesota was 10-6, in large part, due to the coach. He recognized that TJ wasn’t getting it done when they went 0-2 out of the gate and switched him with Gus.

Is he the sharpest tool in the shed? Probably not, but they could have worse, and I agree that it will be interesting once Favre is not under center. I am fully aware that the Vikes aren’t 11-3 without him, and how Chilly addresses the QB issue once Favre is gone will define his tenure as the VIkings coach as much as the Favre era has.

I wasn’t trying to say Washington’s money spent doesn’t count, I was just trying to say it’s been questionable. Haynesworth has character issues, and Hall has been viewed by many as a bust. They both had 1 good year. Hutch and Allen had many good years and I don’t think there is any question as to whether or not they would produce once they arrived to the Vikes. I can’t say the same for the Redskins and there FA situation.

It will be interesting to see how the Qb situation is addressed. Spielman has been pretty good the past few drafts in evaluating talent but I don’t know how good this years Qb class is going to be coming out of college. From living in MN, and reading the Star Trib pretty religously, I think you guys will go with either Jackson or Sage but who knows. What do you think will be done?

by packallday555 on Dec 27, 2009 4:49 PM CST up reply actions

Really tough to say

I don’t know if he burned the bridges with Jackson and Rosenfels by bringing in Favre, but he definitely set them on fire. You draft Jackson and tell him he’s your guy, then drop him at the first sign of adversity…after you said he was good enough to start a playoff game. You tell Rosie he’s going to be competing for a starting job, and now he’s the #3 QB. To their credit, they’ve been real professionals about the whole situation. I would think they would have to get first crack, because if you draft a guy, it’s going to take a year to develop, and Jackson is probably out of the picture if you go that route. Drafts under Spielman and Chilly have been excellent, for the most part, but hitting on a Matt Ryan or Joe Flacco is the exception, not the rule.

Personally, I don’t think either one of them are franchise type guys, but if you made me choose between those two or drafting a guy, I say go with Jackson and see what he can do for you. Maybe he’s learned something sitting behind Favre.

Favres EGO is larger than the Vikings

I’m suprised there is enough room in the dome for it. This all started in Green Bay when could’nt tell TT how to run the show. As far as pulling Favre isn’t that out landish as it may seem. as long as it is just for a series or two just to confuse the defense like widlcat formation. Or to use a pair of young legs. But we all know that Favres EGO can’t handle this. I guess we saw his true collors.

by cheddarhead on Dec 21, 2009 6:24 PM CST reply actions

Love how they both played it down....

The video from Sunday’s game clearly shows them arguing. Not “discussing” it like they claim they were. Yeah, Childress hasn’t had that team for a long time. Favre’s arrival just took whatever control he did have away. Its Favre’s world and Chilly is just living in it.

I find it ironic that Chilly would bench Tavarias Jackson because he isn’t a good QB, but he’s willing to put him in during a crucial point of the game where homefield advantage is on the line? Just so he can protect his starter? His starter is one of the reasons they got to where they are now! Just one example of why the Vikings will go another year without a SB trophy.

If the Vikes don't win a SB this year

I think the reason will be the offensive line play. In the 11 wins, they’ve been pretty damn good. In the three losses, they’ve had their ass handed to them.

Favre v. Chilly is an ESPN made for Monday Night Football story. The bottom line is that the Vikes haven’t blocked well in two of the last three games. If it keeps up, they’ll be one and done. I firmly believe that if the Vikings bring their A game on both sides of the ball, they can beat anyone in the league.

in the long run...

The Favre to Viking move might help out the Packers. I know they beat us twice this year, but I doubt they’ll win the Super Bowl. Favre’s arrival means atleast one more off season where Minnesota isn’t sure of their QB situation. Also, it allowed Childress to receive a contract extension.

so happy

at the end of the day, favre will leave them worse off.

childress sucks as a coach.

what he did in the off season was disgusting. no team player would like what he did.

“we have no interest in signing favre, t-jack is our qb, blah, blah, blah, etc.”

oh, wait, I have to leave and pick up favre at the airport and do his laundry and wipe his a$$

by Acme on Dec 22, 2009 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

Haha I know!

Their Qb situation prior to Favre was a mess! If they think Jackson, Sage, or a rookie is going to be able to step in and be even close to effective as Favre their crazy. This is great for us, because our defense proved this year that we can slow AP way down, and if he isn’t going for them there’s no way they beat us. It also doesn’t help that McKinnie has been average this year, and that Hutch hasn’t looked like the all-pro he has been this year.

Honestly, they got a bit lucky that we had all those injuries on defense last year. If we didn’t lose as many guys as we did for the year in 08’ I would be willing to bet almost anything we would have won the North last year.
