Mason Crosby - A Waste Of Oxygen

Pittsburgh 37 - Green Bay 36! We only needed 2 points to win? And another missed field goal cost us 3 points? Can someone please explain to me why Mason Crosby is still a Packer. How many games has he cost us this season, and how many more is he going to have to cost us before he is replaced with someone that can actually kick a field goal? For that matter, if McCarthy and Tomlinson aren't intelligent enough to recognize the need to replace him, maybe he needs to go with him.

Agreed....

There’s no one out there of decent quality to replace him at the moment. Better to gut it out with Mason “the Shanker” Crosby for the rest of the season than to try and get a newbie up-to-speed. He’ll be gone after the season and hopefully, we’ll pick up some young stud kicker from the draft and/or free agency.

Kickers in the draft

Isn’t it weird that the top rated kickers in the draft every year tend to kinda suck? I mean, we’re talking absolute stud college kickers that for some reason don’t pan out quite the same way in the NFL. Kaeding, Crosby, Nugent. These guys were monsters in college. And you’d think out of all the positions in football, kicker would be the most easily translated from college to pros. How does kicking change in pro ball versus college? Hm, I don’t get it. Its taught me a lesson that I’d never take a kicker higher than like 5th round.

by Jayrome007 on Dec 24, 2009 9:34 AM CST up reply actions

Kaeding has been great for the Chargers…not sure how he made the convo. Another big name kicker in college was Janikowski and i think he’s been pretty decent though too.

I am totally with you on your take!! I tend to try to defend kickers cause there is no other position in sports where 80% is considered a poor performance, but Crosby has been absolutely AWFUL lately.

Out of curiosity...

Who kicked in the USFL? Was anyone there worth anything? They’d at least be in kicking shape, whatever that might be.

by Danwood on Dec 22, 2009 1:35 PM CST up reply actions

Wondering the same

There had to have been a kicker who did well in that league. If so, I wouldn’t mind at least bringing him in to see how he might fair in the cold weather. Though if you think about it, we’re only likely going to play one more cold weather game this year, which will be this year at Lambeau.

Geno Hayes

Kicked for the Tuskers I believe. anyhow the guy had a big leg and looked like he was pretty accurate.

I just looked at the UFL team kickers, and Graham Gano and Matt Bryant were both signed by NFL teams.

by packallday555 on Dec 22, 2009 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

That's the worst part...

That most of us actually expected him to miss it. There isn’t much more shock value left in this one.

by dchoubak on Dec 26, 2009 1:39 AM CST up reply actions

haha…I don’t think he’d come back anyway…

by TrevorR on Dec 22, 2009 3:47 PM CST up reply actions

He'll go wherever the money is...

Hence where he is right now-in Tiger Woods’s gated community! Hey-O!

Longwell????

If you recall, Longwell sucked when he was with Green Bay. He wasn’t much better than Crosby. What I don’t get is: How could Longwell do so poorly at Green Bay and then so well at Minnesota. Is it coaching? Is it the dome? I don’t get it.

by mikemcd56 on Dec 27, 2009 11:36 AM CST up reply actions

Probably the Dome. Obviously, the conditions in the Dome are much more favorable for kickers then outside at Lambeau.

by packallday555 on Dec 27, 2009 4:50 PM CST up reply actions

WHAT?!?!

Longwell did NOT suck when he was a Packer. He was a top kicker in the league for like 10 years with us. Aside from 2001 and 2005 where he was inexplicably terrible, he was one of the better kickers we’ve had. In 2002-2004 he kicked over 85% and that is in the swirling winds of Lambeau. You can make any argument about him you want but THAT one is complete BS garbage. You realize that in 2005, while he kicked only 75% that year, he still made FIVE fgs over 50 yards? That is pretty dang good.

2007 & 2008 were just like his 2002-2004 years…this year he has been unreal though. Not much has been asked of him for the most part though since its indoors.

One other note…he still has YET to score more points as a Viking than he did in 2000 when he put up 131 points for us…he still hasn’t reached his numbers in 1998 or 2002 (128). So I guess I don’t get this post!

BOOM!!!

The news we’ve all been waiting for, Carney was just released by the Saints:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/12/22/saints.moves.ap/index.html?xid=si_nfl

Any reason you don’t see the Pack going after him?? If we do, do we just drop Crosby or do we keep them both and cut someone else???

by TrevorR on Dec 22, 2009 6:44 PM CST reply actions

Any reason?

Sure, let me list them:

Crosby is #31 in the NFL in FG%, Carney is 29

30-39 yarders: Crosby kicks 78%, Carney 62%

Carney hasn’t even attempted a FG over 46 this season and only has 3 in the 40+ range (and only made 2). Crosby has 14 in the 40+ range and has made 8 of them.

Carney is 96% on XP, Crosby is 97%.

In other words, he’s no upgrade. At least Crosby has the leg to attempt a long FG, the Saints apparently gave up on that with Carney altogether (which may not be a bad thing, but I don’t think MM would go for it simply because we had Carney, he’d trot out the lame horse again and again to watch a kick miss again and again.).

by Danwood on Dec 22, 2009 8:40 PM CST up reply actions

If the Saints released him

I’m not sure the Packers want him either. That said, I have paid zero attention to Carney this season. Just my first thought.

by Brandon on Dec 22, 2009 11:13 PM CST up reply actions

Carney is not an upgrade...

Might as well keep Crosby for the rest of the regular season and flush him during the off season.

by pvilleWIcheezhed on Dec 23, 2009 7:24 AM CST up reply actions

Just want to start off by saying this is in response to all of your comments above. That’s disappointing. I know he was on the Giants last year and was great for them. I didn’t realize he was having such a disappointing year. Might as well keep Crosby.

by packallday555 on Dec 23, 2009 11:56 AM CST up reply actions

Carney is a tough one to figure out. I hadn’t looked too closely at his numbers but I did now. He’s not having a GREAT season, but he’s been decent. He was only holding his job cause the other guy was suspended I believe. That said, he’s not a great improvement and it looks like he doesn’t have the leg he once did so losing Crosby on kickoffs would be tough.

by TrevorR on Dec 23, 2009 1:46 PM CST up reply actions

I don't care

CFL or Europe. Either way. A high School kicker makes 34 yarders. With all the close games last year and a shot at the playoffs this year people are saying you can’t get a guy from the CFL or Europe?? Come on. Cripes.I mean by week 4 they knew they needed a kicker. And not to be too hard on MM but “zero interest” zero interest?? Are you kidding me.

by GBfan73 on Dec 23, 2009 2:06 PM CST reply actions

I don’t get how he can say the zero interest thing either. It has to be for confidence purposes only. It’s good that MM has a lot of confidence in his guys but there is a point where you just have to say alright enough is enough. That point has been reached with Bush and Crosby. I know there isn’t much we can do now but both of them should be gone as soon as the season ends.

Hey PAD555

I have 1 more FFGame ( for the win). Do you think I should start Dallas Clark vs Jets or Should I take a gamble and play Finley vs Seahawks? I knocked off the #1 top seed last week

by GBfan73 on Dec 23, 2009 7:20 PM CST up reply actions

Haha oh man, that’s a tough decision. I have Clark in one on my leagues and Finley in my other one. It’s a tough choice. They’ve both been super consistent the last 3-4 weeks, and both get a lot of targets. No one has been able to stop Clark as of late, but I think Rex Ryan might be able to slow him down a bit. I think I would go with Finley just cause we’ll likely put up a lot of points, and every week FInley’s targets and production seem to go up.

Have you heard whether or not all the Colts are going to play the whole game? I had thought I had heard that some were going to rest. I’m not sure what the deal there is but obviously that could have an effect on your decision too.

I would say Finley but I’m a homer haha. I think you’ll likely be good with either of them.

by packallday555 on Dec 23, 2009 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

Finish the season with Crosby. Maybe pick up Carney for the playoffs. With the offense driving the way it is with A-Rod, he could put Carney in range. He’s one season removed from a Pro Bowl season with the Giants.

Touchdown, Ronnie Brown Edition!

by 23_Wind on Dec 23, 2009 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

That's true

Our offense has been really, really good as of late. It seems like when we getting going on a drive, we finish with a TD or get stopped relatively close to their endzone. They’ve really improved as our o-line has gotten better and better.

Yeah, Carney has always been really accurate, his one knock is just his leg strength but with our offense that’s not that big of a deal. He would definitely be able to kick at Lambeau seeing as how he kicked at Giant stadium, which is probably the most difficult stadium to kick in. I kind of doubt we’ll ditch Crosby though this year.

by packallday555 on Dec 23, 2009 9:15 PM CST up reply actions

Dance with the one that brought you

If we make the playoffs, you stick with Crosby, end of story. As I posted above, Carney is no better than Crosby (in fact, his overall FG % is inflated because he has most of his attempts inside the 30).

And being one season from a Probowl removed doesn’t mean all that much. He’s a 45 year old kicker. Not saying that 45 is old overall, but it’s old for an NFL player in any position. Yes, there have been some old kickers, but once they lose the touch, they lose the touch. No sense in gambling on someone with a worse track record this season.

by Danwood on Dec 23, 2009 9:53 PM CST up reply actions

It must be comforting though...

that Mr. Irrelevant Ryan Succop is doing pretty well for the chiefs.

by dchoubak on Dec 26, 2009 1:44 AM CST reply actions

LOL

We outta get our kicker in the 7th Round of the upcoming draft then. At least give Crosby competition. I do think that Crosby can turn it around. He hasn’t been comfortable with any of his holders yet, which doesn’t help. Remember, Ryan Longwell struggled in his last season here with a new holder after Doug Peterson retired.

I say again, I have faith in Mason Crosby. It’s a matter of confidence and consistency from the holder’s position.

by Jabooty on Dec 27, 2009 11:03 AM CST reply actions

I think I still have faith in him too. I like him…I hope we bring in competition but that he wins. He has a BIG leg which is nice for kickoffs too!

or...

maybe we bring in Folk from the Cowboys! haha keep the carousel going.
