Upset: Bears Defeat Vikings In OT, 36-30
Well I didn't see that coming. The Vikings have looked unimpressive, losing their last 3 road games, but they still haven't lost at home this season. So that home field advantage thing is apparently a big deal for them. I haven't watched an entire Vikings game since they beat the Packers on November 1 (which happens to be the Vikings' last road victory) so I don't know what's wrong with them.
So what's wrong with the Vikings? Can you see them making a playoff run after losing back-to-back games to non-playoff teams (Panthers and Bears)?

You don't go into the playoffs deflated and win anything
Since the 16-game schedule began in 1978, 61 teams have entered the playoffs having won two or fewer of their last five games. And only one of those teams, the 2006 Indianapolis Colts, won the Super Bowl. But of the 47 NFL teams that entered the playoffs on five-game winning streaks since 1978, 10 have won the Super Bowl. —WSJ
and same source:
Since 1978, 72% of teams on five-game winning streaks won their first playoff game, compared with 56% of teams that won four of their last five, and 52% of teams that won three of their last five.
I think that momentum is very important. Obviously, there are exceptions. Last year’s Cardinals were a perfect example. But the overwhelming majority of teams that win more than one game in the playoffs have been on a roll.
This definitely hurts the Vikings. It will hurt them even more if they lose the first round bye.

This means if the Eagles continue their hot streak Sunday
you’ll want to avoid them if you’re a wild card team (and the Vikings win, putting the Eagles in the divisional round).
Luckily for us, things have got a lot simpler, and there’s no conceivable scenario for us to play the Eagles.
If we win, we play Arizona.
If we lose and the Vikings win, we play Arizona.
If we lose, the Vikings lose, and the Eagles win: we play Minnesota
If we lose, the Vikings lose, and the Cowboys win: we play Dallas
I’d like to play either Arizona (I think we match up well), or Minnesota (stumbling, tough to beat a team 3 times). Dallas I’d like to avoid, because it seems like they’re starting to find themselves.

I am PUMPED that its literally impossible for us to get the eagles in the first round! They are playing at a HIGH level right now…the only two teams that are playing poorly right now are the ones that everyone was crowning the best teams in the conf for most of the year. What an odd year this is shaping up to be.
Still a little shocked the Vikes ACTUALLY lost even though I was telling my friends here in MN all week that it was a scary game for them!
Watching the postgame press conference...
Chilly seems upbeat after a loss. Don’t know if that is good or bad after a tough loss like that. The Vikings should beat teams like that this late in the season. I have a feeling they will lock up the 3 seed now, which means they are going on the road if they win in the first round. That means on the road at Philly, yikes!
Now watching Favre, does he seem deflated. He got pretty upset when a reporter asked the “0-7 on the road in under 32 degrees” question

Or if we hadn’t lost to the winless Bucs…Or how about if the Ravens kicker makes that 45 yard FG to win? Oh well, we’re in the playoffs, that’s all that really matters.
Just kind of funny to look back at this year. With the huge problem areas we have had this year, we still were relatively close at winning the division. Makes me really excited for the years to come, and after the Vikings are Favreless.

I think that is a good attitude...
The Pack in the playoffs is nice this year. 6-10 last year to a playoff team. I don’t think anyone at the end of last year would have imagined this.
I hope we do well in the playoffs, but I think this is just the beginning. The years to come will be fun. If we can continue to draft reasonably well and possibly pick up a key free agent (the Woodson deal looks like a big fat steak right now), we can be a force.

I agree.
And I still don’t like McCarthy, but I think it was after the Dallas game and I saw a video from the locker room after the game. Nick Barnett was giving a game ball to McCarthy and saying to all the players, “he took a lot of flack for us this week he deserves this game ball” and, at the very least, it told me that the players have his back and respect him

I think maybe someone in the JS said it...
…but McCarthy deserves a lot of credit for keeping the locker room together. Perhaps I underestimated him.
I mean, if Brett hadn’t thrown a boneheaded pick two years ago, we would have been in the Super Bowl.
Bad coaches don’t get to the Super Bowl.

And I think you’d find many Bears fans who would consider calling LS “bad” an improvement over their real feelings.

As fans, I don't think we have to like the coaches of the teams we follow.
Like you said, if the players are behind him, then it is great. We don’t see everything that goes on all the time. I guess things start to come out when things are going really bad via media and players speaking out. That didn’t really seem to happen that much this year. There were blips, Woodson comes to mind, but that is all I can remember.

Brandon, to answer your question...
Yes the Vikings can do it…they’ve lost 3 out of 4…but justlike Arizona last year—-they lost 4 of their last 5 right?
The reason they lost is because
1) their special teams were atrocious…kick coverage especially
2) The Vikes secondary looks very vulnerable…Winfield is still not 100 percent…his ankle looks like it’s bothering him. he got absolutely torched by Aramashodu on the last play.
3) They vikes played without Pat williams, so that could make a difference. (he has a right elbow problem, nothing serious though)
4) But the biggest negative is the offensive line play….wow I really don’t see how Mckinnie or Loadholt will be able to contain our OLB pass rush, from a Claymaker or a brad jones. And there two guards, Herrera and sullivan were also getting pushed around.
The weird thing is, it’s like the Vikes kind of have our previous Oline problems and our problems have become more manageable
BUT, the Vikings are still a dangerous team, they scored 30 points in the second half. And if FAvre can find a second wind (which I still think he’s gonna fall apart), they they are dangerous.
The NFC is so wide open, you really can’t count anyone out.
Looked it up...
Arizona lost 4 out of their last 6 games. Slight correction

It’s funny because our early season problems are seeming to become the Vikings problems. Their o-line still isn’t playing nearly as bad as ours once was but they have looked less then mediocore as of late. Their kickoff unit looked horrendous and managed to kill any momentum the Vikes had built up throughout the game, just like ours always seemed to do.
Their secondary is weak. Let’s just be frank about it. When teams can slow down Allen and co. they get shredded. Winfield is tremendous up around the LOS, but in coverage man on man he is a little above average at best. Griffin is ok, and their nickel and dime backs are brutal. Tyrell Johnson has been bad the whole year, and Williams has screamed mediocrocy the whole year. And with Henderson now out, any team with a good TE will be able to exploit Brinkley.
Yeah, they scored 30 points but lets keep in mind it was against a Bears team without their starting Le, #1 Cb, Rolb, Mlb, Fs, and Ss. I would hope the Vikings would be able to shred them.
Favre looked good but in all honesty how hard is it to throw checkdowns the whole game, and then got YAC from his Wr’s. This was largely due to the Bears dropping their 2 safties deep every play, and trying to have their some of their backup Cb’s try and cover Rice and Harvin. I’m not trying to discredit Favre’s play because he was great and obviously he is going to take what the defense gives him but against playoff caliber teams he won’t have the luxury of just throwing to the checkdown, and having that player gain 10-15 yards on that play.
I think the Vikings are in trouble. The loss of Henderson has really hurt them, and since his absence they have looked very mediocore. Without their defense consistently holding teams to 10-17 points a game, I don’t know if they’ll be able to make a run in the playoffs like I had previously thought they would. With the o-line troubles they’ve had combined with Chilly’s playing call troubles every so often I don’t think they can win in a shootout with a team who has a top caliber offense.
Their definitely still dangerous and could still make a run but at this point I just don’t see it happening. Their o-line and defense has looked mediocore the past 4 weeks, and unless that changes I just don’t see it. I am a Packers fan though, and would like almost nothing more then to see the Vikings go out in the 1st round of the playoffs so keep that in mind when reading my take on things.

and I was yelling at the tv the whole time saying how favre was looking good because of the checkdowns, but you gotta give him some credit for taking what the defense gave him

.. but you gotta give him some credit for taking what the defense gave him.
And I did and do but against a playoff team they will not be able to do this. The reason the checkdowns were there was because they dropped into a Cover 2 zone nearly every play, and focused on taking away the intermediate and deep passing game of the Vikings. Obviously teams with better secondaries and LB corps will not play this sort of “prevent” type defense against them, and the checkdowns will not be there all the time.
Winfield could very well still be hurt but he really hasn’t ever been that great of a cover guy. What makes him so good is his ability to hit guys like a LB, and his strength. Even Jaworski, who watches film pretty religiously said Winfield is great up around the LOS but when you get him in man coverage down the field he becomes relatively average.
I was screaming at the TV when that Bears defender didn’t pick of Favre’s pass down the seam right before the 2 minute warning. It reminded me of the 49ers game, and I thought that the Vikings would end up winning the game. Luckily, I was wrong :).

Hey there packallday
Great points, and I forgot to mention Henderson. That’s a big blow to their defense, and you are right, Olson was able to exploit that missing piece from the Vikes defnese. Henderson was their field general, and as good as Jarrod Allen is, Henderson was the field general.
It really IS like they have our problems! lol, you saw all those long kickoff returns. I thought I was watching the packers special teams!

I think their biggest concern is this back and forth between Favre and Childress. They are trying to say there is nothing there but what IS there is a difference in how they think the game should be called and honestly I’d take Favre’s side. When Childress/Bevell are in control of the playcalling, they suck…when they let Brett play his game, they are almost unstoppable. The past few weeks they’ve been trying to show us they can still run and they can’t. Their Oline can’t run block [perio].
Yep
Favre clearly knows how to run the offense better then Childress/Bevell do. My favorite par was when Favre wanted to keep the spread out there on 1st and goal from the 3 but Chilly sent in the goaline unit and they got stuffed haha. Then later the spread stayed out there like Favre had wanted and they scored a TD on it…Man I’m glad I’m not a Vikings fan. I would be irrate that my coach is that stupid.

No HFA for them is big. Huge considering how they have played on the road as of late. I am going to vent now……… I must say I am a little tired of hearing about “good teams” or “play off caliber teams” or even “superior teams” Especially as of late…. when these “superior teams” have been choking in games they are supposed to win. I mean come on…. the bears did it with no Hester, knox (after 2nd half) Tillman (after 2nd half) and Ogunleye. All year I have listened to how easy the Packers schedule was (is). Tampa beating the Saints—— sort of made things OK in my mind. You can’t downplay it by saying they wern’t playing for anything—- HFA IS HUGE IN THE PLAYOFFS!!! The coaches know it and the players know it. I loved the look on AP’s face when Cutler threw that TD, that whole viking sideline looked deflated. And now we can watch how much fun the media is going to have taking about viking late season downslide. Note: Meh, yeah I have been hard on MM from time to time but over all, they guy has a nack for turning the youngest team and players in the NFL into true pro’s, there is something to be said there about those coaching skills.

You can not blame him for A.P fumbling.
This is classic Minnesota Vikings late-season Chokeing !
Just like you can’t blame Rodgers for our defense giving up TD’s last year :). Haha sorry had to say it, but like you said let’s not go there! All that matters is the Vikings look like their on the verge of of a collapse, and we’re actually playing pretty good football!
by packallday555 on Dec 29, 2009 1:22 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah…this one doesn’t go on Favre at all…not even a little bit. In first OT drive, he was sacked like 3 straight times and we aren’t talking Big Ben type sacks. The second time they were moving the ball and AP fumbled. He did everything he could to do it for the Vikes and it was looking like it might happen.
Having watched the game last night
the most glaring differences (to my tired eyes) between the rampant Vikes and last night’s looooooosers (heh) were the pressure the Bears were able to put on Favre (when they dropped men into coverage he was still able to pull them apart [see second half, esp 4th quarter]), the fairly rotten Special Teams (‘tis the year for that though, right?) and the dealing with J Allen: rather than going straight at him, the plan appeared to be to allow him to get up to speed then use that speed to guide him behind Cuntler and out of danger. That way he couldn’t pull moves or just push the Tackle to the ground and it worked pretty well for a large amount of the time.
When they did run at Allen
he got flattened. Its like watching a high school cheerleader trying to stop the run

Jared Allen has no moves
He just rushes up field as fast as possible towards the QB, that’s it. It’s nice to see this world class twat get shut down again. DPOY candidate my ass.
by Charlie Kelly on Dec 29, 2009 10:26 AM CST up reply actions
Seriously. He is just an athletic freak who sprints up field as fast as he can. Not to say that, that is a bad thing or anything but I think there are people better then him. A team FINALLY ran at him, and we all saw what happened. It’s disappointing that 4.5 sacks of his 13.5 sacks this year came against us when he was matched up with….wait for it….Daryn Colledge! Who is our LG, who is a joke at LT and hell, even at LG.
Anybody else noticed that all the counter plays and off tackle runs the Bears were doing were working? The Vikings defense is so fast flowing to the ball, that they can be caught on misdirection runs and I would suspect after tonight teams will try that much more on them. The Bears ran these types of run plays until about the end of the 3rd quarter and then decided they just wanted to try and do dives straight up the middle. Why? I’m not sure, but they still won the game.
Allen should NOT be DPOY. It should be Woodson, Sharper, or Revis.
by packallday555 on Dec 29, 2009 1:29 PM CST up reply actions
Even more sacks
7.5 of his 13.5 sacks are against the Packers. That means in his other 13 games he has 6. If those are DPOY stats, then you should give it to Clay Matthews.
I was thinking the same about Matthews as well. T.J. Lang started at LT for us in our second game against the Vikings correct? And I believe it was his first ever start too. Too bad we didn’t have Clifton, who has actually been decent against him in the past. Allen has been getting shut down by the better LTs he has faced this year.
Matthews didn’t start until like week 4 I believe too. Give him that obvious sack he had against Big Ben, which was overturned and 3 more games starting and I think it’s safe to say he could very well be the NFC sack leader. I can’t wait to see what kind of impact he has next year.

Matthews is finally getting some consideration for DROY and ROY which is nice. He’s been one of the most consistent rookies out there this year. I think Harvin needs to start coming out of the list, he hasn’t done anything for weeks now.
Same here
He’s been awfully quiet for a while now, and Matthews has slowly been getting better and better. I haven’t been keeping up with how Cushing is doing as I heard he was in the running for DPOY as well but Matthews has been a big part of our 3-4 being able to succeed this year.
I think Oher will likely get the ROY and Matthews will get the DPOY.

Yeah, Oher
I mean, they made a movie about him. With Sandra in it!

Wow...AP to miss practice all week!?!?
First the loss, now this?
AP is apparently going to miss practice all week. I guess he is being flown out to New York. Apparently Dick Clark called and requested him to appear at Times Square to help with the ball dropping to celebrate the New Year!
