Open Thread: Sunday NFL Games

As we wait for the Packers/Ravens game on Monday night, what games are you watching this weekend?

The Eagles at Falcons game is interesting, since both teams are playing for a wild card spot. The Cowboys at Giants is another interesting match-up between the Packers' wild card rivals. It's a travel day for me, though I may catch some of the Vikings at Cardinals on Sunday night. The interesting thing about that game is whether the Cardinals can win and put some distance between them and the 49ers. It could increase the odds that the Cardinals will bench their starters in week 17 when they play the Packers.

I Feel Dirty

I’m having a hard time rooting for the Cowboys. My mind tells me it’s a logical thing to do, my my heart feels like it’s betrayal.

Boooo Cowboys

Glad to see them lose. Going to watch Vikes/Cards because AZ is on the menu. Caught some of Seahawks/49ers, but had to turn it off in disgust. I think Alex Smith is a fine up and coming QB, but abandoning a RB like Frank Gore just makes no sense to me whatsoever. Knowing the Pack has to face the Seahawks, I wonder if they’ll be a tougher match than the (costly!) game against SF was.

You root for the Packers right?

Don’t you want to see the Packers make the playoffs? The Giants winning doesn’t help that, just so you realize.

With all due respect... I'd rather we earn the berth than get it by others fading away

I honestly have no desire to see the Packers in the playoffs if they do not belong. The Packers need to do their jobs and win the upcoming games if they are going to play beyond week 17.

Furthermore, we just need to finish ahead of just one of the Giants, Eagles and Cowboys, so if the Cowboys pull their traditional December swoon, that helps the Packers in the end. The Eagles play both the Giants and Cowboys before the season ends. That is a guaranteed two more losses for teams competing with us. Call me greedy, but if only three of the Eagles, Packers, Cowboys and Giants can make the playoffs, I’d love to see the Cowboys as the odd one out.

If the Packers finish in the top six in the conference, I’d say they belong in the playoffs no matter the record. You don’t really mean all you say do you?

You're confusing techincal qualification with being a playoff-caliber and deserving team

I simply jumped in here because I saw you attack another fan for not wanting to root for Dallas over the Giants.

Our Packers are pretty badly flawed in some really important areas. If they cannot play at a high level over the end of the season, at least controlling those issues (O-line, penalties, and special teams) well enough to look like a team that will not be obliterated by higher ranked teams, then I would rather not back into a 6th seed.

SF is CRAZY for abadoning Gore. He is the centerpiece of stability for that offense. They are 1-2 since going to the spread and while the passing numbers are up, they are not winning and ysterday was a VERY winable game.

I think Titans/Colts is an entertaining matchup

Partly because they’re division rivals, but also because Indy is undefeated (but have had some close ones), whereas Titans are on a roll after a terrible season start.

I predict an Indy win, but not an easy one! It’s 7-3 right now at the start of the 2nd qtr.

May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.

Saints/Redskins

What a game so far. Saints come back from down 10 to tie in the last minute. Still some time on the clock, but this is what appears to be the Brees MVP year. It still looks to be going into OT.

And that breeze you felt from the west? That was the Vikings collective flipping their lid as the Saints tied it.

Yea, I got several angry texts about the refs

I wonder if they forgot about that 23 yarder the Redskins missed that essentially would’ve ended it? That was probably the refs fault too.

I got one text from a friend say, “After watching the Saints today I now know the Vikings are four sure better.”

So dumb.

by packallday555 on Dec 6, 2009 4:29 PM CST up reply actions

You could send one back saying "after watching that Pitt/Vikings game..."

Saints are still better at this point. They are 12-0 against a tougher schedule so far.

Vikings have the 2 worst SoS so far this season. Saints are 8th. So technically the Vikings need the Saints to drop 2 games to have clinched the home field advantage.

Saints have: Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Dallas, Carolina
Vikings have: Arizona, Cincinnati, Carolina, Chicago, NY Giants
Bold home

Vikings have a tougher schedule so it may be hard for them to get their hopes up for home-field. But hell crazier things have happened.

I’d rather not go. I hope we get the Cardinal A team. If we clinch before, great. If not, let’s earn the berth.

So....

The only way you want to see Green Bay in the Playoffs is if we go 12-4 and beat a Cardinals team that is NOT resting their starters. Anything less, you don’t think we deserve to make the playoffs?

You are adding loads to what I said...

I am simply tired of hearing fans looking for back doors into the playoffs. Obviously, we cannot control what the Cardinals do. However, with the seriously weak schedule we played this season, if we NEED to get backups in the final week to squeak into the playoffs, we will not likely even be competitive.

by NYCPac on Dec 6, 2009 9:10 PM CST up reply actions

You guys are arguing semantics...

Improving chances can be something widely interpreted to different people. I understand what you guys are saying, but I would rather play the B-team as well. If we get to the playoffs, I don’t think either team wants to have to play smash mouth football going into the post season.

by BenSheets15 on Dec 6, 2009 8:37 PM CST reply actions

While I replied to your post

I was responding to many fans here who I have heard express similar sentiments about facing B-teamers. If we NEED that to get to the playoffs, then I meant what I said about not being happy about going.

Now, that does not mean that I will not root my tail off, hoping for the Packers to pull off an upsets and even make the Super Bowl, if they make the playoffs by backing into the slot. However, teams that back into the playoffs almost NEVER do anything when they get there.

by NYCPac on Dec 6, 2009 9:14 PM CST up reply actions

Benefit of the Doubt

I think we all can agree that we would prefer the Pack to clinch a wild card berth. However, I will take it any way it comes. Some teams rise to the occasion. Let’s not forget that nobody expected the Cardinals toake it to the Super Bowl, and when they did, few commentators expected the Cardinals to make it a real game.

Even if it is a one-and-done backdoor playoff run, there is still upside. What can be wrog with giving the youngest team in the NFL a taste of the playoff rush…and gain some needed postseason game experience? Plus, these young Packers deserve more exposure and recognition nationally.

Just something to consider.

AP has been quiter this year than the last two

Only broke 100 yards in 3 games, and only one of those against a team worth a hoot (Baltimore). Favre was supposed to compliment AP, not supplant him… but that’s exactly what happened.

very true

but it has seemed like the Vikes didnt even give him a chance… Chilly is taking a page from MM with only 13 carries for AP

I'm convinced that the passing game is a drug to a coach

It’s successful and has big reward when successful, so they ignore everything else. See Reid, Andy for a great example.

by Danwood on Dec 6, 2009 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

It's a mistake.

After keeping his attempts in the 20’s for the past few weeks, they spiked to 48 and 45 the last two games. I’m not sure how it is that a team forgets it has AP in the backfield, but this was not a game where they should have abandoned the run until then went down by 17 at the earliest, and even then they still had an entire quarter to play…

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

Lose to a team you should beat, and a game you chalked up as an L for Arizona turns out to be so far their best game of the year. That showdown next week won’t mean nearly as much.

Is anyone, regardless of their view on Favre's departure...

… surprised that he played his worst game of the season right after the calendar turned to December?

Maybe it will turn out to be an anomaly and he’ll play well the rest of the way. But that sure looked familiar to me. This stuff has been going on for 4 years and the only chance Minnesota has to avoid flaming out during Favre’s annual melt down is to take the ball out of his hands. Tonight AP was ineffective, their defense couldn’t stop the Cards, and Brett felt like he had to make plays, and voila: 2 picks, and 2 more picks that were flat out dropped, not to mention 3 more downfield passes that he just chucked into coverage.

What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

by Ted Simmons Speed Camp on Dec 6, 2009 11:18 PM CST reply actions

No I really wasn’t. He has never really been able to go a full season without an end of the season meltdown. Really should have thrown 4 INTs tonight and looked uncomfortable out there.

The Cards did an excellent job on AP tonight. 13 carries for 19 yards!? What!?

It doesn’t look good for the Vikes right now. They’ll likely have Henderson, Griffin, Johnson, and possibly Winfield out on defense. Could be a win for the Bengals next year.

by packallday555 on Dec 6, 2009 11:21 PM CST up reply actions

And Right on time too..

he was 8 and 3 with the jets and fell apart…that’s 11 games. And I believe the Pack were 9- 1 and then fell apart, in a way, going 5-3 the rest of the year in 2007…So that was the 10 game mark.

I remember making the suggestion that the Vikes should consider sitting Favre in some games, (like against the Lions or even the upcoming Tampa game), given his recent history. Give him some extra weeks off to mayabe avoide all the above, but I guess things don’t work that way…

by PackFaninFL on Dec 7, 2009 2:06 AM CST up reply actions

They did sit him for a period in each game I think…for sure in the Lions game.

by TrevorR on Dec 7, 2009 9:23 AM CST up reply actions

I mean...

…give him a total week off. Have him take back up or third string snaps. so a full week of minimal practice and zero game action.

But I know it doesn’t work that way.

by PackFaninFL on Dec 7, 2009 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

Oh I don’t think that will ever happen. I haven’t heard any talk like that up here…he’s too important of a player to them right now.

by NorthStarr on Dec 7, 2009 1:28 AM CST up reply actions

It wouldn't be impossible

Their remaining schedule isn’t easy.

Bengals – This team continues to look more and more legitimate each week (Barring the Raiders game)

Panthers – In my opinion, the only gimme of the remaining games but I don’t think Carolina is as bad as their record and it is in Carolina.

Bears – The Bears appear to be in a freefall and Minnesota just destroyed them a week ago, but it’s in Chicago in late December and the weather could be nasty and well all know how Brett plays in cold weather.

Giants – Again, this team hasn’t looked as good as usual but I can see them picking up steam like in 2007 and they’ll definitely have something to play for at this time.

by Charlie Kelly on Dec 7, 2009 6:24 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah…its not as easy a schedule as they hoped. That Chicago game could be dangerous. The Panthers are a decent team but I can’t see how they have a chance of beating the Vikes. The Bengals and Giants could still do it though.

by TrevorR on Dec 7, 2009 9:22 AM CST up reply actions

Unfortunately

The Vikings hold the tie breaker, so the Pack would need to gain THREE more games in the standings, even with a win tonight.

A three game swing in the standings over a four week span is an awfully tall order.

Yeah, its not going to happen…but its fun to dream. Its nice to hear the fans getting a little nervous now. Makes that Buccaneer game even more BRUTAL though. If we have that game as a win right now we are in a really interesting position!

If we were 8-3 right now and able to win out we would have a bit of a chance. Vikes could lose to Cincy and NY Giants. But we would still have to win out which would be very difficult.

Agreed

The Steelers seem very beatable. The Bears look to be falling apart. The Seahawks should be an easy win. The Cards will likely go on a streak now and hopefully rest their starters against us week 17. Now we just gotta beat the Ravens which isn’t going to be an easy task.

I think I have a unique vantage point on this game

I live in the DC suburbs of MD, no more than a forty minute drive to Baltimore. I watch alot of Ravens football each year, go to Ravens training camp each year and to a degree, root for the Ravens.
This is not the same Ravens team as last year. Ray has definitely lost a step, the corners are below average, and they don’t have any good receivers not named Derrick Mason.
This could so easily blow up in my face, but I think we pull out a close one tonight.
