Toss Up: Donald Driver or Derrick Mason?
I posted this at Baltimore Beatdown and thought I would pose the question to you all as well. Its funny how comparable Donald Driver and Derrick Mason can be. Who is more durable and who would you rather have? They both it seems, are past the prime of their careers but while Derrick in his 13th season, will most likely retire next season, Donald just keeps on ticking and in his 11th season still looks as durable and athletic as he always has. He put a nifty move on Foxworth but who couldn't...still his second effort to dive in the endzone was impressive and showed how timeless he's become. Honestly its a tough choice for me and I've always preferred Derrick Mason but with Driver being a close second I'm not sure how much of that is just bias. At this point I don't think too many people would argue that they they would trade our receiving core for Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, and James Jones. I've always thought that was one of the best core of receivers in the NFL but that's for another discussion. Check below the jump and give me your opinion on who you would rather have. Thanks.

Everyone in here will take Driver I think.
Nothing against Mason. I like Driver’s scrapiness. He’s small but he’s got a ton of energy, isn’t afraid of a hit, and gets crazy YAC. Statistically they are almost the same…though driver seems to be getting better with age.I always liked Mason too. He’s a very good WR who keeps on rolling…I just like Drivers style!
Packers receivers are problematic for Fantasy Football...
Not based on talent, but by the way the Packers system spreads the ball around. I gave up FF because it distracted me from Packers football (and I won $400 and wanted to go out in the positive)…
Look at the numbers. Aaron Rodgers is in the top 5 for every category but none of the receivers are in the top 20 or so. I’d rather have a receiver who get 10 points EVERY game than one who gets 20 one game an 5 the next…
That being said, Driver leads in both median and average fantasy scoring…
Mason – AVG:8.33 /MED:8.5
4, 3, 17, 14, 0, 15, 10, 3, 7, 14, 12, 1
Driver – AVG:10.08/MED:10
3, 15, 16, 5, 10, 14, 6, 13, 5, 4, 20, 10
You put your finger on it, I think.
Thus far Mason’s a notch better, but Driver’s got a LOT more left in his body barring a horrific injury that ends his career abruptly. If he avoids that bad luck, his numbers will be well beyond Mason’s by the time they hang it up. If you’d have asked me when they came out or 3 years into their career I would have taken Mason without much hesitation. But on the back end I think it’s pretty obvious that Driver is the better man now and significantly better moving forward. I can see Driver performing at this level for 2-3 more years and staying in the league until he’s 40 with some luck and a willingness to play a reduced role. Given his body type and his courage over the middle, it’s amazing how durable he’s been.
What begins in fear usually ends in folly.

I never ever...
want to see the phrase “Donal Driver” and “horrific injury” in the same sentence ever again! Good golly, just the hypothetical is scary!
Over at Baltimore Beatdown they think Driver too
I can see the similiarities between the two, but it’s pretty obvious to most that Driver is better. I think the few who think that Mason is better over there are just Baltimore homers who haven’t seen how great Driver is.
I think you can pose this question anywhere
and most will take Driver, obviously including me.
But Mason has something Driver doesn’t: Mason caught passes from a QB in his MVP season, when he was with McNair and the Titans in ’03.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.
-Jack Handey
What does that have to do with anything?
Did catching balls during McNair’s best season have an “aura of greatness” rub off on Mason? If so, does Driver get residual greatness from catching balls from a 3-time MVP?
I think it would be tough to do this poll league-wide and get any votes for Mason except out of homer-ism (Ravens fans) or spite (Bears/Vikings fans).
Godspeed...
Call me crazy
but if I had an MVP vote this year I might just toss it Arron Rodgers’s way. That’s probably why I don’t have an MVP vote.

What he’s been able to do under the circumstances he’s had (horrible o-line) is pretty impressive. If we finish at 12-4 or 11-5, which seems very doable, I think he might deserve to be in the MVP talks. He certainly will have the stats to be an MVP, it’s his ability to win and be clutch that has been in question.

Well of course Donald Driver himself is gonna prefer Driver over Mason. That seems pretty obvious :)

Are you freaking insane?!
Driver has some of the best hands in the NFL *(not seen on Monday) he also is without a doubt THE toughest WR in the NFL. You can have your D.Mason and a bag a chips and get the hell outa here!
Green and Gold / Black and White
Talk about Packers homer....
I love the Packers as much as anyone and I understand the value of Donald Driver to this offence but those were two outlandish statements. It can be argued about a few guys but Donald Driver does not have the best hands in the NFL, he has great hands but not the best. It makes more sense to say that he is definitely one of the tougher receivers in the NFL but ask most experts and they will probably say Hines Ward. Pertaining to the topic, I would definitely pick Driver but thats not to take anything away from Mason because he was one of the best receivers in the league in his prime
Well.
Ward might make headlines with big hits and “tough guy” plays like that, but he’s about to miss a Sunday of football due to injury. This coming one week after criticizing Big Ben on sitting out a game. All things considered, I’m not sure how to justify the statement “Hines Ward is the toughest WR in the NFL”. They are both tough, but since becomming starters Driver has missed only 5 games, while Ward has missed 6 (still, only 6?!).
wasnt Driver the one
who fell on his head/ neck back in the earl 2000s or something. And that was the only time he has missed?
Yeah
I remember that. I don’t think he missed a whole lot of time though.
Wow that brought me back thinking about that. I think that happened in 2003, not positive though.

Yeah I cant remember how much time he missed
but I am guessing thats where the majority of the 5 games he has missed in his career come from. He was very lucky that could have ended him career…
except
Ward is an a$$hole and the Packer fans would never like him.
I'll disagree with you there
Ward is the prototypical guy you love when he’s on your team and hate when he’s on your opponent. If he was a Packer he’d be loved here.

Exactly
We would LOVE seeing him throwing big blocks on LBs. I still actually kind of like him even though he isn’t on our team.

fine
I am taking my ball and going home…
I would probably like him if he was a packer, but he isn’t, so I don’t.
Haha aww sorry acme. I guess I think him and Driver are kind of alike so that’s the only I say I think any team he was on, the fans would like him.

But
DD is a class act… He won’t question his QB’s will to play (and then have to sit out the next week) or trash talk about a LB he took out. DD is a team player that wants to win..
at this point in their careers I'll take driver
but in their primes? Tough…. but probably Mason.
They’re definitely both fine receivers, this is like picking between 1 and 1a
The time for reckoning has come, and we already have the answer
Going forward? I'd take Driver.
Obviously he’s younger and is putting up better numbers this year. But you’re right — both do have extremely similar career numbers. I kind of forgot how good of a career Mason has had.
