Just an idea

Let me first state that Aaron Kampman is my favorite player currently on the Packers.  He is arguably the best player on the defense.  With the switch to the 3-4 wouldnt it make more sense to try to trade Kampman?  He is one of the best 4-3 ends in the league but is a big question mark for us at OLB.  What if he is a bust at OLB?  Is he then gonna walk when his contract expires after next year to play DE for some other 4-3 team?  The franchise tag is only an option if he can actually play the new position at a high level.  You would think a team would be willing to give up something similar to what the Vikes gave up for Jared Allen.  Kampman is imo just as good as Allen.  I am not saying I want him to be traded I just think it makes some sense.  I just wanted to get some other opinions.

NO WAY!!!

If the OLB doesnt work out for him then put him back on the line at DE. As most people think here the DE in the 3-4 is just a gap filler which is not necessarily true. If the 3-4 is run correctly it is pretty much the same as a 4-3 but with a LB rushing instead of another DT. Also just look at Aaron Smith of Pit he had i believe something like 8 or 9 sacks this year at the DE pos. of a 3-4.

But if the 3-4 DE pos is just a gap filler wouldnt it make more sense to then trade Jenkins? Since there is probably no way we could even try to use him at OLB- NOT SAYING I WANT TO TRADE JENKS but if we were to trade one of the two I think he would be more fit to go then Kamp

One last note about all this… I dont really see Kampman complaining if we did just use him as a “gap filler” at DE. he seems like a guy that will do anything for the team to win.

I agree that Kampman is a team oriented guy and will never complain. Using Kampman as a “gap filler” DE seems like a waste of resources to me. You can’t really compare him to Smith. Aaron Smith plays at about 295lbs, Kampman is about 265. Sure, Kampman can bulk up to play end but they are trying to make him a OLB first and there is no way he can add 20lbs in the middle of the season if the OLB thing doesn’t work out. Remember this is basically a 1 year trial for AK, if he doesn’t like the 3-4 he will just take his free agency next year and we get nothing in return. I hope he has a seamless transition to OLB and gets 15 sacks next year, I am just trying to play the devil’s advocate role here. At the end of next year he could still be the best defender on the team, but he also could be another Poppinga at OLB. That is a BIG potential swing. I don’t like the risk of turning your best player into just another guy. I guess my main issue is the conversion to a 3-4 when our front 7 personnel really doesn’t match the requirements of the scheme.

I am not saying trade AK for the sake of trading. If you can get a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for him like the Vikes gave for J. Allen, you might have to take it. Coming off the injury, Cullen Jenkins has no trade value. Jenkins is actually more of a prototypical 3-4 end at 300+ lbs with some athleticism.

yeh

jenkins is the better fit for a 3-4 d-end and didnt have enough speed to be a great pass rusher in the 4-3 anyway. Kampman isn’t big enough to play on a 3 man line at d-end, but I think if utilized correctly he will be effective in the 3-4. Also, didn’t he haynesworth get let into free agencey today. With Peppers and Suggs off the market and with all our cap space do you guys think he’s a good grab

haynesworth..

has some personality issues that I’d rather not mix with the packers’ young, impressionable, locker room. also, we don’t have THAT much cap room and he’d probably command an outrageous salary (as he should). Additionally, he’s never played the 3-4 NT slot so it’s no guarentee that he would be as effective as he is in a 4-3 system.

I agree. Also, he seems like the kind of player that would get his money and lose his edge.

Interesting

I expect he can succeed at either DE or OLB in a 3-4. Even if his stats are cut in half because he has to play DE, although I think he’ll be fine as an OLB, something like 6 sacks would be great for a 3-4 DE. I can’t imagine they won’t be able to find a role for him.

We should trade Kampman

for Wally Sczerbiak’s expiring contract. Whoops, wrong league!

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I'd rather

trade Charlie Villanueva for Shawne Merriman.

Oh yeah,

When Shawne Merriman comes off the books after next season, we’ll have so much cap room to go after Lebron.

Yeah, what would we get for him? It’s harder to get actual value in a trade in the NFL than it is in, say, baseball.

Kampman is my favorite player on the team. He is a class act, a team leader and the face of the franchise. Whenever you see charitable works or packers functions, Kampman is often the player representative. He plays with a non-stop motor and never complains. There has to be a spot on the defense for him. He can’t be traded. Yeah, Jared Allen was traded, but he is a piece of crap. He has that whole glug, glug, vroom, vroom thing going (thanks Florio).

even if kampman doesnt work out at OLB MM has said many times that there not going to lineup in a 3-4 every possession and has said that capers is going to work some 4-3 into the playbook so he will still be effective no matter the situation
