Overtime..
Finally something other than TT, FA, and the draft to discuss. Overtime in the NFL first team to score wins. Well from what I have read it doesnt seem like the owners will be voting on the issue, but that does not stop us from having our own debate on the subject.
The Pack lost two games last year in OT before even touching to ball. However, in 2007 we all know about that great Favre moment in Denver in the OT win. So it goes both ways.
I dont know why everyone bashes or just plainly dislikes the college and even high school does the same overtime. For those of you that don't know about the college/ high school OT. Both teams get a chance starting at the oppenents 25 yard line and you play till one stops the another. And after the 2nd OT you have to go for 2 after each touchdown. Personally I love this OT I believe it is much more exciting. It gives both offenses a chance and gives both defenses a chance to do their jobs. In the NFL's OT it lacks the excitement that should be there for a OT game. Once the coin toss is done you are pretty sure team will win.
So what does everyone think about OT? Do they change it? How?

I'm turning into a traditionalist
My first thought was that by adopting the college overtime rules it would pad stats, so don’t change it. But it would be a lot more fun.
Play it like the Arena League!
Both teams have one guaranteed possession. If one team has a lead by the end of that, game over. If not, first team to score after that wins.
Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

haha so it sounds like the arena league is the exact same as college rules???? haha no offense or anything cool hand just thought it was funny
That's not quite the same thing.
Under those rules, one team would win the coin toss, receive a kickoff, but if they scored on their possession, they’d kick off to the other team and give them a shot. Or, if they punt, the other team gets the ball and it becomes sudden death at that point.
That’s entirely different from two teams starting a possession at the 25 yard line. And it’s better.
"The reports are that he is getting better. The definition of better is nebulous."
Agreed
I like this system the best. Play it like normal football but guarantee both teams one shot at scoring.
I would hate to see the NFL use the college system
I understand the concept of both teams having the ball (although defense is part of the game too) but that system takes FOREVER! Everytime I watch one of those games that goes into 3+ OT’s I find it so frustrating. How is it fair that after two teams have played for 4+ hours that what determines who wins or loses is whether or not a team can convert a 2 point conversion? I mean how on earth is that more fair than a coin toss? Just because one exhausted team can pick up two yards while another exhausted team can’t doesn’t make them better. Its better to just call it a tie at that point since its obvious that neither team could sepearate themselves from the other.

Well said
I’d rather have ties after regulation than the awful college system.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

They have to start going for 2 at some point
That’s when it gets exciting

It may be exciting to watch but it isn’t any more fair than the existing system. To say that after 4 or more overtimes you can determine who is clearly the better team by who can pick up two yards and who can’t is not fair to either the fans or the players. Imagine that your team loses in the 4th or 5th OT of a regular season game and then misses the playoffs by one game. Does that sound fair? To say that because they couldn’t pick up two yards after 5 hours of gametime they clearly are not worthy of the playoffs is ridiculous to me.
In Peter King’s column on Monday he mentions in his Stat of the Week section that the notion of changing OT was completely shot down by the players so it doesn’t look like it will be changing anytime soon. King goes far overboard by claiming that he hopes the next Super Bowl goes into OT and that the team that wins the toss kicks a FG to win it on the first possession. Just because Peyton Manning lost a playoff game without touching the ball King is going off the deep end on this one. I didn’t hear him beating the drum for OT changes when Favre threw the bomb in Denver on the first play.

The other thing that I hate about the college system is that if the game goes to OT you can almost GUARANTEE that the game will go to at least 3 OT’s. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a college OT that doesn’t go to a second OT
