State of the Packers 09
After a dissapointing 6-10 2008 season, we can a look at a few positive notes, Aaron Rodgers had a great year throwing for over 4000 yards his first year of starting and we can look at........well I guess that was the only positive note last year. Now that the whole Brett Favre debacle is over, Mr Thompson should have got down to buisness this offseason, but once again he has decided to build through the draft as our only 2 pickups have been Anthony Smith and Duke Preston. A couple of backups at best. My mouth dropped when Thompson said last week we have no glaring needs at any position. Are you serious?? Was he watching the same team I was last year? If I recall, Mr Thompson, you produced your thrid losing season in 4 years. And your one winning season was mostly Brett Favre not your ridiculous draft picks. Ok to not just bash you I will give you props on a few things. Greg Jennings was a great find in the second round and has turned into a pro bowl reciever and Charles Woodson was a great signing he has had some of his best years here, but beyond that what have you brought to the table? Now about your "no glaring needs" statment. We are in Desparate need of a Defensive End, now that Kampman is playing linebacker next year who do we have, Cullen Jenkins who is coming off a couple injuries, Ryan Pickett who might not be the right size for a 3-4 defense, Mike Montgumery who also is not the right size or a starting caliber player, Justen Harrell your "gem" you found in the first round of the draft a few years back has turned into the biggest bust we in Green Bay have seen since Jamal Reynolds was taken with the 10th pick back in the 2001 draft and Johnny Jolly who could be doing some jail time. You really dropped the ball on Chris Canty, who actually seemed interested to come here. Then we have the Offensive Line, its starting to look very doubtful Mark Tauscher will be back and Chad Clifton is a 10 year vet who I believe lead the offensive line in penalties last year that leaves you with Tony Moll, who is more suited for a guard and Breno Giacomini who is coming off ankle surgury. You can probably get a good offensive tackle in the draft, as long as you dont trade down like you enjoy doing, last years Outland trophy winner Andre Smith of Alabama should be available at the number nine pick and is a great pass blocker and could play either on the left or the right side. We could also use some depth at outside linebacker and in the defensive backfield, but not as serious as our lines. But probably one of the biggest needs is a punter! Why you ever got rid of Jon Ryan is beyond me and his replacements Derrick Frost and Jeremy Kapinos where absolutly aweful as a result opposing teams allways started in good field position. So Mr Thompson I will end with this, the youngest team in the NFL thing is not working and you need veterans and leaders which rookies and younger guys cant be yet. I remember the last big splash the Packers made in the Free Agent market back in 1993 when we were able to snare the biggest name out there in Hall of Famer Reggie White, his leadership helped the Packers go to two Super Bowls and win one for us. Open your eyes and put on your sunglasses Mr Thompson cause the glare is blinding.

They have to draft defense right off the bat and get some fresh and agressive blood infused in this defense, not many of there players strike fear into there opponents .

wow....
it’s obvious you hate Ted Thompson. although i will agree with you on the OL issues, i don’t think DL is as big of a concern as many people think. DE’s in 3-4 defenses are basically DT’s in 4-3 defenses. do you really want to pay a guy like Canty $10 million a year just to stand in one spot and hope two offensive linemen block him? although Justin Harrell hasn’t been too bright since being drafted, i strongly feel he’ll come around in the 3-4 defense. yes, he’s injury prone, but don’t give up on him just yet. give him a chance to play before you make a quick judgment. besides, he’s not that expensive! he’s actually very inexpensive. i think Harrell’s skills will be better utilized as a 3-4 DE to compliment Cullen Jenkins. as for Jenkins, i’m concerned about him, but don’t want to give up on him yet either as he’s the ideal 3-4 DE. the Packers do need a NT though. Ryan Pickett is not as good as most Packer fans claim him to be. outside of Green Bay, PIckett is an unknown “never was.” if he couldn’t get it done in a 4-3, he aint gonna get it done in the 3-4. our DT’s was the problem in not stopping the run last season! however, this is not a deep draft class for DT’s, so the NT position may need to be postponed.
ok
if D-line isnt a big issue who would start for us? Jenkins- Pickett- Harell? who is our other end
Jabooty, yes i really would have liked to see him pay Canty $10 million. We’re not using it for anyone else, and it’s a experienced player who has proven himself in the 3-4. Harrell is a bust face it, he will never be healthy. Even when he did play last year he was terrible. Pickett actually is a very good lineman and he did do very well last year considering he got double teamed on almost every run. Haha and how do you justify saying that your concerned about Jenkins and then follow it up by saying he is the ideal 3-4 end?? Doesn’t make sense. But he is the ideal 3-4 end. He played dt and de in the 4-3, and is 6-3 310, the perfect size for a 3-4 de. For someone who thinks DL is that big of a issue you seem to have a lot of issues with them
Blog not Clog
Dear Jackson Jeff,
Please learn how to write in paragraphs. You may have something useful to say. But, I can’t tell because your writing style is unreadable. Flow-of-consciousness is fine for artists. Football blogs are not art.
(Note linebreak informing readers that my thought direction is changing) I have no experience comparing players as they switch from a 4-3 defense to 3-4. Since it clear that you do, please provide examples of how our line men compare to other teams you’ve studied as they make the switch and how their body types and attack styles compare.
(Note another linebreak, I’m changing focus again) You listed some of TTs draft successes and failures but didn’t mention a #1 draft pick that just finished 6th in the league at his position in his first year as starter. I think that qualifies as a success. If not, how much better should he have performed? Remember this offense scored more points in the 4th quarter than any other team in the leaque. I’m guessing your going to say being first in this catagory isn’t enough.
(Another line break, change in direction :) )Who do you think he should have taken in FA? Remember that Dallas preferred to pickup the Slavic quitter rather than resign Canty. Please review the salaries of our current linemen and tell me how you would maintain locker room harmony while bringing in someone that another team didn’t want for two to three times what you’re paying the guys who are already here.
(Another line break – new set of ideas) Thanks for thinking about these questions. I look forward to learning from your football expertise as you develop your writing skills.
