Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

GM Ted Thompson's Interview

Of course he didn't give up much information. Not that I wanted him to. The draft is part poker game and he has to keep his cards close to the vest. They'll consider trading down or up, a player will come off the board if character is a concern, and they've done a lot of scouting.

His explanation rambles on a bit, but he explains why he is such a good GM:

(Do you go through different scenarios, saying if X player and Y player are both available, which player will we take?)
We do that with our scouts, after they came back in after Easter. The things that we focus on, we don't get quite there. We're talking more in terms of making sure that the positions are balanced properly. That, OK, we have Joe Y at linebacker and we have Joe X at guard. We have this guard in the fifth round and we have the linebacker in the fourth round, but wouldn't we think about those guys at about the same time? So we kind of try to make sure that it's balanced horizontally. It's a little bit easier to balance them just by position, because you say I'd rather have this receiver than that receiver. But when you're looking at it this way, you have to first get this right, and then make sure that this is balanced as well. If any of that makes sense, that's good.

It's easier to rank a single position vertically (#1, #2, #3, etc.) but he's looking horizontially and making sure every position is addressed in the draft. He can't guarantee that every pick will succeed, but at least he can keep adding players to every position so no part of the roster is starved for talent.

Where are the emperor's new clothes?

Thompson’s dud/stud ration is a bit below average. Mr. Do-it-with-the-Draft hasn’t drafted particularly well, and if you don’t do much of anything else, you are in the position of having to draft particularly well. TT’s 2007 draft has so far yielded one starter: a place kicker who misses a lot of FGs. Maybe he should change the way he thinks about the draft. Packer fans now pooh-pooh #1 picks (unless they’re talking about the Bears in which case the lack of #1s will doom the Bears for the next century), but look at Indy and the Steelers. Either they’re very lucky or they do more homework. Sure, TT is better than Shermie or Matt Millen, but guys like Polian & Kevin Colbert blow TT away. TT is average-to-below-average. Just like the Packers.

Word?

If TT was “average-to-below-average”, that would mean he would rank anywhere between 15th and 25th in the NFL. Go ahead and find 14 current GM’s that are better than Thompson, and back it up.

Can't

They can’t even name 10 other GM’s much less 5 that are better!!! They are nothing but “haters” of Thompson cuz he doesn’t do it the way they want him to!!! That, and Thompson isn’t exactly socially graceful, at least not w/ a camera in his face…

I could care less about his social skills w/ fans… But the people in the NFL hold him in extremely high regard!!!

and

Go ahead and find 14 teams that have had a better record than the Packers since Thompson as been GM. Even if there are, the Pack have one of the most successful, young teams and without injuries like last year and with a more experienced Aaron Rodgers, the team has avery bright future.

Uglyfatpimplynerd- I agree he isn’t the draft guru that most people would make you think he is but to say he below average is ridiculous. I mean the best example you could come up with was Crosby…He was like 80% on field goals his only 2 years in the league. That’s pretty good. Sure he messed up on picks but i think his successful ones far out weigh the busts. Aaron Rodgers Greg Jennings, both are some of the best at their position. Enough said.
