2009 NFL Draft Day Two Open Thread
Today is a new day. Green Bay went a long way in addressing its defensive weaknesses by coming out of Day One with B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews. But, as we all know, the draft is seven rounds long, and Ted Thompson makes his living in rounds 3-6.
(Please don't remind me that Green Bay traded away BOTH of their third round picks. Trust me, I am still not over it.)
I regretably won't be available for the majority of the second day, so my liveblogging skills will be sorely missed. Consider this an open thread for discussion of draft-related goings-on, breaking news, trades, and other bits of vital info which without we would all be shells of our former selves.

Remaining draft needs
Unlike Mitchell, I’ve come to like the OLB Clay Matthews trade, and don’t mind the loss of two 3rd round picks.
The two biggest needs were outside linebacker and defensive line. Both of those needs have been addressed. The Packers have six picks today, although the first one isn’t until No. 109 in the 4th round. They can still add some young players to add depth up and down the roster. What other positions need fresh blood:
1. Defensive end. Didn’t we just draft Raji? Yes, but he provides depth at defensive tackle. Injury prone Jenkins and Harrell are currently projected as starters when in the 3-4 and there is no one behind them. All the other DEs from last season are undersized to play in the 3-4. They need to find a couple undersized defensive tackles, guys right around 300 lbs., who can compete for backup spots. This might be something they look for with undrafted free agents too.
2. Offensive tackle. With RT Mark Tauscher unsigned, and he wouldn’t be ready to start the season as he recovers from ACL surgery, this could be a need if they are letting him leave. No one in the 4th round or later is a candidate to walk into camp with a starting job, the possible replacement for Tauscher is someone currently on the roster (Tony Moll? Daryn Colledge? Josh Sitton?), but without Tauscher the Packers could use depth.
3. Safety. This would be a future need. Collins and Bigby are the starters but they are both possible free agents in a couple years. Rouse is still there as the top backup, but despite having three excellent to good players, this position was a big problem last season due to injuries. Finding a promising young player that could step in as an injury replacement should be considered.
4. Wide Receiver. Why? He always drafts a wide receiver.
5. Running Back. They could use a big back to compete with RB Ryan Grant. They’ve already got other big backs, RB Kregg Lumpkin and RB DeShawn Wynn, around to compete as the starting big back, but they could use some other candidates in case Grant’s poor 2008 season wasn’t a fluke.
Did I miss anything?

Pat Lee
I’m a big fan of last year’s 2nd round pick. Plus Will Blackmon has looked good at times, and former nickel back Jarrett Bush was just resigned. Williams is a good young player at the nickel. Plus Woodson and Harris showed no signs of slowing down last season (Harris’ injury wasn’t age related and he bounced back very strong anyway). I don’t see it as an issue now, and anyone drafted at CB might have trouble even making the team.

Matthews Trade
Now that all the picks traded for the 1st round pick used on Clay Matthews, here’s what the Packers hypothetically gave up.
No. 41 – CB Darius Butler. The Packers wouldn’t have taken him, but could have had Florida State DE Everette Brown. But could have he made the switch to pro OLB? Carolina drafted him at No. 43 and intend to use him on the DL.
No. 73 – DB Derek Cox. Probably not someone they would have drafted, but could have had Wisconsin OLB DeAndre Levy. But Levy isn’t smooth in pass protection and undersized.
No. 83 – WR Brandon Tate. I don’t who the Packers might have taken at this spot that isn’t still available in the 4th round.
Overall I’m pretty happy with the giving up that for Matthews.

ok...
that’s fine. Merideth was on the board and the passed for a different OT which means they figured he was better.

OL T.J. Lang, Eastern Michigan
Jamon Meredith was projected earlier, but so was T.J. Lang. He wasn’t even invited to the combine, but had been projected as a late 2nd, early 3rd round pick.
He’s similar to last year’s 4th round pick OL Josh Sitton. A small school player who rocketed up draft charts last year after the combine. Now both players are Packers.

Mitch King
He’s exactly the type of guy I wanted them to target for 3-4 defensive end. An undersized college DT who would play DE for the Packers. And he could still be available in the 5th round.

Three picks, three positions
The Packers needed to address three positions; defensive line, outside linebacker, and offensive line. And they’ve addressed all three with their first three picks. Not all these guys will work out, but they’ve made the picks they needed and all three look good so far.

Apparently
Lang doesn’t project to be an OT in the NFL.

I think all 3 were good picks. Raji is going to be a stud in the nfl. He is 330 pounds but still very nimble. He could come in on running downs at DE along with pickett and jenkins. Also imagine the d-line when we’re in a nickel or 4-3 package. Jenkins at LE, Pickett and Raji at DT, and Kampman at RE. We shouldn’t have trouble getting to the quarterback this or stopping the run.
Matthews is a guy who could become a very good player. He was a very late bloomer weighing only 166 pounds his freshmen year at USC. He grew a couple inches and is now at 240 pounds. He ran a 4.6 and had the fastest and second fastest time in the 20 yard shuttle and 3 cone drill. Which shows he has good accerlation and can drop and move his hips relatively well. All those things would indicate that he could be a very good OLB in a 3-4 defense.
Lang is a guy who was projected as a 2nd-3rd round pick and has good value. He is about 6-4 315. I have read on a couple draft sites that he could play any of the 5 positions and read on some that he will most likely be a guard. Either one is completely fine with me.
I really was hoping we would take a cb in one of the earlier rounds of the draft but it’s hard to complain about our draft so far. We drafted our 3 greatest needs.
by packallday555 on Apr 26, 2009 12:29 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Also
It is easier to get a good CB in the late 1st round than a good OT or OLB. If we are good next year and have a low 1st round pick, one of the better CBs may still be on the board so we could get one of them with the approaching departure of Al harris and Charles Woodson.

A Bigger DB Problem...
Harris has never played well in off coverage, which the Packers can now be expected to more play with the change to 3-4. That change in scheme, even more than age, could mean a decline in Al Harris’ effectiveness.
However, in the same vein, maybe some of the younger guys will take to the coverages in the Capers’ defensive schemes better than the physical bump-and-run the Pack played in the old scheme. To be honest, I think that finding CBs who actually like playing such a physical style can be hard.
by NYCPack on Apr 26, 2009 12:59 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Style
I’ve been wondering what style, press coverage vs. cover-2, Capers will bring to the team. It hasn’t been made exactly clear, although Capers has said he’ll use the personnel he has in that the team’s roster hasn’t been put together with a 3-4 mind. I’m not expecting a big change in scheme in pass coverage, but as I said, it hasn’t been made crystal clear what Capers will do.

Ricky Jean-Francois
Might be a nice player to provide some quality depth as a 3-4 DE. He’s listed as a DT but he looks like he has the athletic ability to play end. Apparently he had a groin injury this year so maybe that’s why he’s slipping.

WHAT???
Why would we pick a FB?? We have 2 solid ones already. I thought for sure it was going to be Jamon Merdith. I was hoping he would be there and he was and then we go and take a FB?? I just don’t get it. Clifton is old and we might not even get Tauscher back. Even if we do they both are like 33, and their play seems to be declining. We got Lang which was a good pick, and Meredith only made sense. I just read on nfl.com that he has played all positions except C, and they think he could play any of those in the nfl similar to Lang.

From the J/S Blog
“Here are the guys still available from my other list:
Jamon Meredith, OT, South Carolina (he may be falling because he’s known as being a “difficult” personality. And who knows, maybe he tested positive for something at the combine. He is coming off ankle injury)…"
I notice that the Packers have been putting a premium in the later picks on hard-working types. Perhaps TT’s scouting team simply does not like Meredith?

Areas I'd Like To See Us Address
With our remaining 4 picks:
3-4 DE Mitch King is a guy who I liked a lot before the draft and he’s still on the board. Adding a guy who here who can provide depth in case Harrell and Jolly can’t make the transition is a must.
HB Our backfield was a bit of a weakness last year. Grant got off to a very slow start and Jackson has proved he isn’t a #1 option. Wynn is pretty one-dimensional, and Lumpkin is still a relatively unknown quantity. With guys like Ringer, Peerman, and Sheets on the board, I’d like us to add some new blood to the backfield.
OT We did take Lang, but he might move to the inside. Additionally, we have upcoming needs at both tackle spots. Taking a guy like Jamon Meredith, who may have some “Issues,” would still be a great value pick this late.

And Meredith is a solid guy. I never really heard much against his character in the time he was here, and I would have if it was an issue. I mean, we’ve had some serious troubles there and Jamon has been a class guy. Smart kid, all things considered, and started a ton in the SEC.

I do not know if it is just the J/S being snippy...
But here is what the blogger there is saying about Meredith:
“Here’s what Bob McGinn wrote about him before the draft. McGinn had him as his No. 7 tackle:
Made 38 starts, including 19 games at LT, 11 at RT and eight at RG. “His strengths are height, arm length (34½), foot quickness, leverage, speed, pulling, second level,” one scout said. “He comes up short in production, compete and functional strength. The kid certainly has the look of an NFL starter. Then you dig and start to understand the inconsistencies. Noncompetitor. Very little passion for the game.” Some of the Gamecocks’ coaches told scouts he was a “locker room lawyer” who was hard to coach. “Probably the best athlete in this linemen group,” another scout said. “They got on him saying he wasn’t dedicated but he was one of the better workers there. Great kid.”"
I know nothing personally and am unconcerned if TT & staff think that the rep is undeserved. I am happy that such a talent was available so late in the draft.

I don’t know anything about that. I do know that our OL coach got shitcanned this year after it had been an incredible problem the last three years. So that’s either coming from an incompetent fool or someone who hasn’t ever coached him.

An interesting link, if anyone is interested
I am having fun checking the almost instant grades for each pick at the Walter Football draft website. The good news is that the main guy there has loved most of the Packer picks. The bad news is that they have also loved the Bears’ picks.
Anyhow, for those who are interested: http://walterfootball.com/offseason2009gb.php

Punters
Kevin Huber, Cincinnati
Huber has a live leg and can drive the ball. He has some placement skills to drop punts inside the opponent’s 20. He was an outstanding college player.
Jake Richardson, Miami (Ohio)
A tall punter with a strong leg, Richardson was productive in the Mid-American Conference. He shows good hang time and has been good at getting punts inside the 20. He knows what it is like to punt in bad weather.
Probably not 6th round, but maybe 7th and definitely in free agency. Punting was a pretty big problem last year.

From the NFL website
“Overview
Scouts see a lot of potential in this former junior college transfer, who was Georgia Military Academy’s defensive MVP in 2006. His size and length on the edge did not result in a lot of production in two years between the hedges (33 tackles, four sacks), though his growth might have been stunted a bit with the Georgia staff rotating him back and forth between defensive end and tackle throughout his junior season. Scouts wonder if he was on the verge of breaking out, as he enjoyed the two best games of his career for Georgia in his final two contests. Wynn racked up a career-high six tackles against rival Georgia Tech and followed up that performance with another four tackles, including two sacks, against Michigan State in the 2009 Capital One Bowl. If his game continues to improve, Wynn could make a roster as a swing end able to play the run and pressure the quarterback — ultimately proving to be a better pro than collegiate player."
I very much like the sound of Wynn’s upside.

Overview
The 2008 first-team All-Big East free safety showed nice versatility playing cornerback after senior star Mike Mickens went down with a knee injury. Underwood played only sparingly in three years (including a redshirt season) at Ohio State, then had his scholarship revoked due to missed meetings and academic issues. But in his only year playing for the Bearcats, Underwood proved to be a playmaker, recording 60 tackles, including 3.5 for loss, three interceptions, six pass deflections and two forced fumbles. His brother, E.J., played briefly in the NFL after playing at Ohio State and Pikeville College.
