Selvin Young

Editor's Note - Here's a good article discussing one player who could challenge RB Ryan Grant.

He isn't a star running back by any means but I definitely think he could a successful starting running back. He has just been released by the Broncos' probably due to the fact that they just drafted Moreno and that they have a ridiculous number of RB's on their roster.

I think Grant is a good RB and think he should definitely be our starter. He is a north south runner who hits the hole hard and can break some tackles and make some things happen. We bring Jackson in as our 3rd down back, and he is alright but generally 3rd down backs are faster guys who are good receiving and I think Jackson lacks a little in the speed department.

What would everyone think about signing Young to possibly be our 3rd down back? He has good hands, good speed, and he is elusive, which is something I personally feel Jackson or Grant don't provide. He also could come in and run some of the sweeps and stretches we run. As Grant seems to be better when we are in the I-Form and the 2 FB formation we run.

Just a thought. Please share your opinions.

Grant had a great half a season in ‘07, and a good ’08 season, but I would love to have another threat in the backfield. Last year Young didn’t see much playing time due to injury, but in ’07 Young saw action in 15 games, rushed 140 times for 729 yards. His yards per carry are impressive, and he recorded 35 catches (also impressive). If Young were to find a place on the team, it would be a situational role.

His injury history bothers me. But for a guy that will probably come relatively cheap and serve as a solid backup/situational player, I like the notion of acquiring him. Assuming of course that we can get him cheap. Perhaps nickels and pennies? Lord knows TT won’t part with a freakin’ dollar to get a FA.

They cut him because he couldn't pass the physical.

Neck injury

As GeauxBears says, he’s still injured. Although he should recover. He outplayed RB Travis Henry back in 2007, a backhanded compliment for sure, but he is a good runner and receiver. The current injury and the injury history is a concern but his profile reads almost the same as RB Brandon Jackson, so he doesn’t fill a need that Jackson doesn’t already fill.

its not a bad idea. but the injury???? How about edgren james? after the season he had last year he may come just as cheap with something to prove! who knows maybe hes got that one good year left.

Young I believe is well into the NFL drug program… He has some issues of some sort and was suspended for 4 games already if memory serves. Honestly don’t remember the exact issue, but he has some definite bagagge… I would pass on him for that reason!

I really want to see what the Blackman kid can do… 5’10" 220 runs a 4.4 40 and was NC State RB, then moved to WR to help the team! He must have good hands if he played WR. Plus he is an outstanding return man…

Pass on Young and give the Kid Blackman the shot to make the team!!!

He has experience running behind a zone blocking OL, so I would love to bring in Selvin Young.

Right

Jabooty- That and the fact that he can catch passes is the reason I would like to see them bring him in. I think he would be better running those zone stretch plays that we run than Grant is. He has more speed and is elusive. We haven’t had an elusive back forever it seems like, and that’s ok but it’s just good to have a power guy and a speed guy. I guess for me what it really comes down to is, I personally think he would be a better 3rd down back than Jackson. Jackson had one really good game last year, but besides that he has been just ok.

Strohman- Blackman sounds like an intersting prospect, with a lot of speed. I think bringing him in is something we should do. Maybe he could return kicks, but Will Blackmon is a hell of a punt returner.

Willie Williams

I see that the Union College linebacker is at the rookie camp according to an internet posting, can anyone verify this and if so any reports on how he is doing, thanks.
