What do the 2009 Packers look like? A Bronco fan wants to know.
Hi Packer fans - Bronco fan here from MHR. To get us through the long off-season we gave ourselves homework assignments to get to know the other teams in the NFL and how they look coming into this season. I volunteered to do the Packers. Why?
I feel like the Broncos and the Packers have a lot in common. We were both hit by a "Bus" in recent off-seasons that really tore the fan-base apart (I actually "adopted" GB as my NFC team after watching your Favre fiasco and even have Rodgers and Jennings in my dynasty league). We both had defenses in 2008 that lost us games, and we are both transitioning to a 3-4 to rectify those woes. Both of our strengths last year were in our offenses. The big difference between our 2008 teams is this: the Broncos were worse than their 8-8 record indicated, and I believe the Packers were better than their 6-10 record -you just didn't get any breaks. Ya'll had 8 of your 10 losses missed by less than a score.
It seems like ya'll did well in addressing your needs in the draft, and the MSM seems to agree. Raji was a great pickup, as is Matthews. You also picked up Capers to help impliment your new scheme.
So what do you guys think? Will your O-line stay healthy enough to let Rodgers do his thing? Will Rodgers stay healthy the entire season? Will your D learn and gell with their new scheme in time to stop AP and Cutler? Seems like the schedule this year is a little more merciful than last year, and I think 10-6 will be enough to secure the NFC North, with no Wild Card.
What do you think?

Other considerations.
We also added veteran safety Anthony Smith from Pittsburg, who is familiar with the 3-4.
Coach Kevin Greene, who made the transition from DE to OLB, is working with Aaron Kampman and others to make the same crucial transition. Altogether, our defense could hardly be worse than last year. We should be stout on the defensive side of the ball this season.
I’m pretty sure I’m not alone in believing that the Packers will win the division next year, and make a legitimate run to the superbowl.

The Pack will be legitimate contenders...
if everything goes as planned we will be fighting with the Vikes for the division. The Bears could also be there, but to me.. they need a WR or two to step up and play.. I think it will be a close race mostly between the Vikes and the Pack and hopefully the green and gold prevail!!!

Thanks bizzle!
Yeah I hope they come out on top, too. Honestly you guys were just a few pieces shy last year. The Queens need a QB and the Bears need a WR, and O-line, and a D. You guys have the offense if you can figure out your O-line and hopefully the players take to the 3-4.

How do you think the broncos will do?
With the new head coach, the 3-4, and a game conservative QB what does it look like for you guys?
by bizzle4 on May 14, 2009 12:23 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Honestly? Who knows!
New GM. New Head Coach. New Defense Coach and new 3-4 Scheme. New Quarterback. And one tough MF’n schedule. We have an awesome O-line, fantastic WRs in BMarsh and Royal, decent TEs in Shef and Graham, and with Moreno and Hillis in the backfield, Orton won’t be without his weapons. Our D was horrible last year – so even if they don’t get the new scheme down 100% by the first game, they can’t get worse. And we are all wondering how NT Chris Baker will pan out.
I think there is a chance we go 8-8 again this year, only hopefully with closer games (those blow-outs last year killed me!) and more red-zone efficiency and improved time-of-possession. I think the division will again be a battle between San Diego and Denver, with no Wild Card coming from the AFC West. Optimism is the drink of the off-season for many football fans, but I think the underlying feeling is – this year we learn, gell, and work it out. NEXT year is ours.

Filling the holes
Sweet! The first Citizen Kane reference on this blog.
The problem with filling holes on the roster, adding just a few more pieces, etc. is that the roster didn’t appear to have any holes going into last season. The biggest question was how Aaron Rodgers would perform, but there were signs based on the 2007 preseason and his game against Dallas that November gave us an indication that he would be good.
But when the season was played out, the defensive front seven collapsed. For no particular reason; the same group of players from 2007 played worse in 2008. It wasn’t an aging group either (the Packers were again the youngest team in the NFL). Injuries to Cullen Jenkins and Nick Barnett didn’t help, but Barnett wasn’t playing very well before the injury.
So now they’ve brought in Dom Capers to switch to the 3-4 (although there will still use a 4-3 alignment at times), and drafted Raji and Matthews in the 1st round. They’re made changes and addressed the problem, but a lot of teams make changes that don’t work out.
I’m optimistic and hope for the best, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. Minnesota won the division with 10 wins, so the Packers don’t have to win 13 again to win the division. They just have to focus on their games against Minnesota, Chicago, and Detroit, and that should win them the division.

So GB 2008 just played flatter than 2007
Maybe the problem is Mike McCarthy? A coach has to inspire that passion and focus in the team. Perhaps he’s just gone a little stale? It happened with Shanahan – word out of our minicamps is the energy and focus is there for the first time in years with our new regime.
What do you think? If 2009 fails to deliver the division, time for a line change?
(yeah -I love that gif)

I sincerely hope that McCarthy doesn't become the scapegoat
He’s only been around for a few years; Shanahan was around for what felt like forever.

defense
you asked some interesting ?,s..let me start by saying the oline should be ok ,there is plenty of depth there with young guys pushing for PT. there is a small need to upgrade the running back position unless d.wynn has a breakout year, also there is more beef in the backfield with a newly drafted fullback, what a hammer! the real question mark is db,s and d line … let us not forget pat lee taken in the2nd round of last years draft should push for PT, athletic db …. the other young db,s need to step it up big time , woodson cant play forever ,he isnt farve ha ha.the big queston mark is what the d line does against the run and how that affects the corner rush, time will tell check back after turkey day at least thats what madden used to say!

the DBs
should be pretty solid… We have Harris and Woodson both are not replaceable but Tramon Williams had a heck of a year last year and should get his PT this year. Lee is still up and coming but he will be good.
The DLine/ LB will be the question mark. And how they convert to the 3-4… Will Jenkins be a good 3-4 DE, Raji, Pickett, Kampman OLB, what Hawk and Barnett are we getting this year..they are all question marks until they perform…
The BIGGEST Question mark on the this team is special teams!!!! everyone blames the D for last season which is rightfully so but special teams did not do them any favors either!

great point about special teams
had Crosby made a few crucial kicks and if we had an NFL punter we may have been in better position in many of those games we lost. the return game could use a boost too.
i’m not worried about the db’s at all. if either woodson or harris gets injured at all i have complete confidence in tramon williams and think pat lee could step up as nickel corner in that situation. we have some depth at safety this year too.
Frye is honestly gotta be one of the top 10 3rd Stringers in all of the NFL right now--colbyb

Packer outlook
The Packer D should be pretty good this year! There will be some growing pains early in the season to be sure, but I have complete confidence in Capers to put a winning D on the field, and improve the D ranking to around 10-15 by the end of the year!
Drafing Raji and Matthews puts us in position of having 2 guys that were drafted specifically to succeed in the 3/4 D. Along w/ a few holdovers who have the abiltiy to play in any scheme. Pickett, Woodson, Bigby, Kampman have the skills to do well in just about any scheme, IMO!
If Capers can integrate his scheme and adapt to the players skills we have a great chance for a turn around year! Kevin Greene will add an intensity to the LB, that was missing most of last year! Jenkins and Barnett injuries hurt the D, but Bigby brought a physicality to the D, that was SORELY lacking last year. His loss was a major reason the D suffered last year as well.
I have alot of faith that Rodgers will have a better season than last! I really believe the Packers will win 11 games and the division in 09!!!
It really comes down to how well Capers can do w/ the piece he now has! The other part of switching to the 3/4 that is overlooked by most is the affect the 10 LB on the roster will have on ST, which was another reason for last years disastrous season! I expect a much better season on D and ST to help propel the Pack into the NFC playoffs.

Packers 09!
I agree Special Teams will play a huge part in our success next year! Especially the kickoff unit, both kicking off and receiving. It seemed like the other team returned it to our 35 at least, almost every kick, and it seemed like we only returned to about our own 15-20 every time. I feel as though our punt unit was pretty decent, I don’t recall giving up any punt return TD’s but I wouldn’t be surprised if we gave up 1, and I think Blackmon returned 3 or 4 for TD’s and Woodson did well returning also.
The next thing is our Defense. Too me this was the reason our season didn’t turn out well. I’m not really going to go into specifics about why it was poor, but rather, just say I think injuries and our D coordinator were the cause of our poor D. As far as next year goes, I’m excited about the 3-4 and all the new defensive staff members we have acquired. I know the transition into the 3-4 can be a difficult one and most of the time is, but I feel it will be easier for us, because I think we now have all the pieces. Too me, I think we have all the talent needed to run this system, and with the help of some great coaches (Capers, Greene to name a couple) I think our D will flourish.
I don’t feel I need to say much about the offense. Rodgers will only be better, which I think will propel him into next years Pro Bowl. The receivers will be great as they have been for the last 2 years, and will improve a ton with a healthy James Jones. And I think the run game will be much improved as our oline should finally be healthy. But keep in mind Grant did rush for 1,200 yards last season, which is pretty darn good.
I think we’ll have 10-12 wins and feel we will win the division!! I can’t wait!!!!!!!!!

And what I really want to know is...
How stout is your pass-rush? I’d like to know how many times you think you’ll be able to show Cutler just exactly how green the grass is on the other side. ;-)

Good question
I have no idea what the answer is. The pass rush will sure will be different in 2009.
The Packers best pass rusher is DE Aaron Kampman, and he is moving to OLB. I’m sure he’ll rush the QB as a downlineman too, but not exclusively. One of the Packers’ all time sack leaders DE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila was released during the 2008 after he lost all effectiveness. And most importantly, Dom Capers is the new defensive coordinator and switching the defense to a 3-4. Hopefully Capers will be better at dialing up the blitz than former defensive coordinator Bob Sanders. We won’t know what the pass rush can do until we see it in action.

pass rush
Honestly we really don’t have a dominant pass rusher! Kampman is very good but I wouldn’t say dominant… We have Matthews now who we think will be good at it, but you just don’t know yet. Also have Jeremy Thompson who was drafted as a 4/3 DE and showed some pass rush abiltiy. He is also going to be lining up at OLB in the 3/4 and as a DE when we go 4/3.
Really the pass rush is likely going to come down to Capers and how much he makes use of blitzes and zone blitzes! I see ALOT of zone blitzes. Capers knows he must mix up the pass rush and blitzing to get the best of the opposition!
It should be good, but we won’t know for sure until we see Kampman, Matthews and THompson in camp and likely into the season to see how they adapt to rushing from different situations.
