Are the odds increasing that QB Brett Favre returns to the NFC North? The current rumor is that he's been calling his buddies on the Vikings' coaching staff and trash talking:
Just saw an interesting, but not surprising, Brett Favre-related item that appeared in the New York Daily News and was picked up by ProFootballTalk.com. Gary Myers of the Daily News talked to a unnamed NFL source, who said: "Favre can’t stand Green Bay. He wants to play Green Bay and say, ‘I told you so.’ His bitterness is creating this. I think he’s calling Minnesota. I think Minnesota is talking about this as we speak. You haven’t heard the end of Favre. No way. He is bionic. As long as somebody will let him in, he will play."
I don't have opinion whether he would be an upgrade over QB Sage Rosenfels. Obviously he's head for the Hall of Fame and Rosenfels isn't, but one season of Favre, age 40, is probably not much better than one season of Rosenfels.
If Vikings' head coach Brad Childress isn't on the hot seat, he should be. That might make Favre in Minnesota even more likely; Childress' needs to throw a Hail Mary to save his job. Still, Vikings' fans still don't seem all that excited about signing him.

Let it be
If the Vikings are headed that way, so be it. Favre is no longer green & gold, I say let him do what he wants. Personally, I want to see him there, I see it as a win-win. The Vikings get a general upgrade at QB and starry eyed hopes at the super bowl, the Pack gets a chip on it’s shoulder and chance to exploit Favre’s greaest weakness against him… that when the big game is on the line he throws an interception because he is trying too hard!
Maybe Brett will bring another super bowl to Green Bay yet :p
(that’s what I’d like to see, personally I think, even though our D is much upgraded, problems inherent in switching to a new system will keep a SB run outta our reach. But wouldn’t it be great, the stuff NFL films are made of :D )
Favre
Time to get real, Favre is a Packer legend…now and always. He gave us the best years of his career. The real shame is how people have forgotten how exciting it was to watch him play for us and where he took us. Stop hating on Favre, you guys are starting to seem like Viking or Bronco fairweather fans. Let’s respect the man for what he has done, and remember he will always be a Packer, both in our memories and in the record books. Thanks Brett for everything!
I agree...
Brett will always be a Packer no matter how people feel about him now or whenever…. Some people have to realize for players it is still a business at the end of the day. Fans get wrapped up in the emotions that go with the game as we stick with our team but for players it is a job. Any one of us that got pushed away from a job would feel the same as Brett did/ is feeling toward the Pack.
There is no question how bitter this makes him seem, every offseason he took an age to make a decision and when the Pack put a deadline on him it was them pushing him out. He had 22 TDs and 22 INTs, not good at all and worse when you consider that 6 TDs came in one game against the Cards. At this point there are only two things that are going to convince me what his plan is, one he signs for the Vikings or two the first week passes because then his streak is dead.
I understand the Vikes here because with a solid quarterback and a healthy year then they have a good chance of reaching the superbowl (that pains me to say). Not sure if Favre can reign in the INTs enough though
Favre is pathetic.
After he spent last summer acting like a 14 year old girl, now we have to spend another constantly hearing about his continued bitterness towards Thompson like that of a scorned ex girlfriend. Hopefully, there won’t be months of speculation this time and he just puts on his purple so the pack can begin to game plan against him. But as soon as he puts on that jersey, he should be done here in Green Bay, no jersey retirement, nothing. Favre has proven through this that all along he was an drama queen egomaniac hiding behind that “aw shucks” laid back southern personality. He wants to get back at the organization and fans that supported him throughout all his pill popping, alcoholism, and stupid plays because the current GM wasn’t willing to cater to his every need. Here’s to a five pick game for the current all time interception leader if he comes back to Lambeau this year.
I find all the crying about him pretty sad
Its pretty funny to hear people make personal attacks on him using words that clearly don’t fit. My favorite is “diva.” I doubt if 1 in 50 have any idea what a diva is. Calling him an egomaniac rates right up there. The notion that Teddy “didn’t cater to him” is pretty imaginative. I do like the idea of not retiring his jersey. I think this site is the one that should lead the drive.

I totally agree with this comment. He should get NO retirement ceremony ever.
Why should a player with such a hatred for the Packers and the fans who paid him millions over the years, get anything. The guy obviously hates everyone in Wisconsin. Giving the Packer playbook to other teams last year was as low as he could get.
If anyone deserves any kind of payback, its the Packers and every fan in Wisconsin against Favre.
really?
You haven’t heard the end of Favre. No way. He is bionic. As long as somebody will let him in, he will play.
This person clearly didn’t see Favre’s meltdown over the last four weeks of the season when the Jets all but had the AFC East wrapped up.
Remember when Kurt Warner went to New England the week after the Cardinals earned a playoff berth? It was cold, it was snowy, it was awful, and so was Warner. People tried to blame it on the Cardinals’ playoff berth induced laziness, but they missed a crucial point.
Older quarterbacks, especially those who have endured years upon years of tough hits, do not play well in cold weather. Favre should know this, he sealed the deal in the 2007 NFC Championship game. The only thing that could make me believe that Favre is going to the Vikes is by looking at the home-heavy schedule the second half of the season for Minnesota.
But he still has a bicep in need of surgery, and the longer he pushes it off correllates with the diminishing chances of his return.
"I'm so clean, cats think I sip Ajax."
clearly he was washed up as evidenced by the game that precedes your example
He also can’t play in domes. His performance has nothing to do with getting repeatedly crushed by opposing players.
if you're talking about the demolition of the Seahawks,
then I remind you that Ryan Grant had a career game that day, as did the defense. Brett played decently, but not the way he used to.
And if you have an alternative as to his lack of effectiveness, I’m all ears.

In the Seahawk game he was 18-23 for 173 yds with 3 td’s and 0 turnovers. He played wonderfully, especially considering his tendency to try to do too much when they fall behind early. He realized it was very early in the game and didn’t panic and trusted in his running game and it paid off big time. However a rational person cannot deny that looking at Favre during the Giant game that he looked like he wanted to be anywhere else but on that field that day.

Brett Favre
I hope he does go to the ViQueens !!! Lets put this to rest once and for all…Let the man make a First Class “FOOL” out of himself…I would bet that if he does go to Minn….he will last only 4 or 5 games before some defensive lineman helps him end his career for good.!!! If the rumors are true; then he must ALSO hate the Packer Fans with as much a passion as he does the team (Or T.T.) Being a Packer Fan for 51 years I am sickened by his actions—-No way he will ever be the “Class-Act” that he once was. I have lost all respect for him as a Player and as a MAN.
How isn't he a diva or egomaniac Pete?
Just because he never paraded around about it like TO or Chad Johnson doesn’t make him any better. He held the fans and team hostage every offseason from about 2003 around while he mulled retirement. Once, he finally did retire, I don’t know if it was “the itch” or the lack of attention but he pulled last summers fiasco which was pretty diva like. Even before this, he wanted everything to be about him, he thought he could be the coach and the GM. Crying about Moss when we already had one of the leagues best receiving groups who made him in 2007 with the YAC. Him wanting Steve Marriucci as HC (Yea, that worked great in San Fran and Detroit) and now he’s so angry and bitter towards the man who told Favre no more that he is willing to turn on the people who always supported him.
Seriously, Brett?
Just let it go man. Enjoy retirement. It’s not worth it, I thought the Jets would have taught you that lesson.
I’m sure all fans can appreciate what Brett brought to Green Bay. Eventually Thompson and McCarthy will move on and Brett’s anger will pass, his jersey will be retired at Lambeau, and all will be well in the universe.

all these freaking rumors ...
are pissing me off big time, everyone knows any story about Favre supposedly talking to the Viqueens will be hot stories…. (and everyone wants their story to sell… )
Someone here posted Favre now hates the Packers and the fans, what a narrow minded piece of crap !! I don’t think for one-tenth of a second that he hates the Packers fans. I do belive he has a grudge against Thompson and possibly McCarthy, but I really hope it’s not so big a grudge that he’d seriously want to play for the Viqueens.
What really happened between Favre and Thompson over the years, we’ll probaly never know.
But I do think it is pretty clear that Thompson wanted Favre to retire from the day he took over. His actions speak for them self. He wanted to rebuild his own team, and not share the glory with Favre. First he dismateled a great offensive line, ok, the interior was ageing, but they could have had a couple of good years if the line was not spilt up like it was, never underestimate the importance of chemistry between the offensive linemen, it’s just as important there as between a QB and his WRs. Instead he went along with his horrible draftchoices (linemen) and a few washed up FAs.
In free agency, he did nothing to convince Favre to come back and play, even with more than enough cap space, and Favre even willing to take a paycut to sign one. (how did Moss work out for the Pats ??) But he had to wait until Bob Harlan was no longer President to finally push Favre out in the cold, Harlan would have had the onions to tell Thompson that his way was not the way to treat a legend.
I think the future will show Thompson was wrong, and instead of being remebered as a GM who made the right moves to win one last SB with a ledgendary QB, he will be rembered for the way he nudged that ledgend out the door.
Hopefully, sooner than later, Thompson will be fired, I want the Packers to be a winning team, but with the offenisve line in the state that it is now, that will be years away.
And last but not least, Brett Favre, please stay retired this time !!! it would be awfull to have to cheer against you, and you would look very stupid in purple!
I’ll agree with you on one thing; I don’t think Favre hates Packers fans, I just don’t think he cares about us at all, either way. Favre seems to believe that the entire league exists simply to give him a chance to stick it to Thompson. Now to where I disagree:
But I do think it is pretty clear that Thompson wanted Favre to retire from the day he took over. His actions speak for them self. He wanted to rebuild his own team, and not share the glory with Favre.
I have never understood this line of thinking. Thompson decided not to go the same route as Sherman as a GM, leveraging the future of the franchise against the chances to win one for Brett. This does not equal wanting Favre to retire. Thompson understood that the Packers would continue existing as a franchise after Favre retired and planned for that inevitability. People point to Thompson’s drafting of Aaron Rodgers as a sign that Favre was being pushed out. This is very short-sighted thinking that ignores the fact that Rodgers (potentially the #1 pick in the draft as close as a week or two before the draft) fell to the Packers at 24. They did not trade up to make this selection, they did not aggressively search for a QB. Thompson selected the best player available that was also a position that was going to be a need at some point in the future, at what point no one knew. Would it have been better to have no plan whatsoever for what was going to happen when Favre did decide to retire? Perhaps we could have been fighting over the likes of Sage Rosenfels, Jon Kitna, or the corpse of Trent Green.
As for not sharing the glory with Favre, tell me what you think of when you think of the Steelers 2 Super Bowls in 2005 and 2008. Is it Big Ben, Bill Cowher, and Mike Tomlin, or Kevin Colbert? When you think of the Patriots Super Bowls do you think of Tom Brady, Bill Belicheck , and guys like Tedy Bruschi, Richard Seymour, etc. or Scott Pioli? To think of the glory of a Super Bowl win going to a GM instead of the players is as ridiculous as the idea that Thompson was dead set on getting rid of Favre the day he was hired. On the contrary, Thompson knew the day that he was hired that was going to be the GM who presided over Favre’s retirement and decided to plan ahead.
I guess foresight isn’t valued by Favrophiles. Wahle and Rivera were let go rather than be signed to long and expensive extensions, which was a good decision seeing as how Rivera was released and retired two years after he left the Pack and Wahle played 3 years in Carolina (one of which was a Pro Bowl season) before being released. A case could be made for signing Wahle and just letting Rivera go but Thompson decided that he didn’t want to pay big money for a guard and stood by his decision. His offensive line draft picks haven’t stood out yet as successes, no doubt about it, but there aren’t many interior offensive line draft picks who come in and make an impact. I’d rather have young offensive linemen who now have some experience and are cheap than having overpaid for a year or two of aging linemen. Again, understanding that the Packers weren’t going to fold when #4 retired.
In free agency, he did nothing to convince Favre to come back and play, even with more than enough cap space, and Favre even willing to take a paycut to sign one. (how did Moss work out for the Pats ??)
Oh boy, Randy Moss again. Have people forgotten that the Packers went to the NFC Championship game the same year that we did not go for Randy Moss? And that one of the main reasons that we had the record we did (13-3 btw) was because of the stellar performance by the receiving corps over the course of the season. All of that YAC was racked up by guys like Donald Driver, Greg Jennings (who would still be a 3rd WR if Moss had come to GB btw), James Jones, etc. How would Moss have improved the team in 2007? He would have delayed Jennings development while not actually improving the team at all.
And why is it Thompson’s job to convince Favre to come back every year? Does the fact that the Packers are willing to pay him 13 million dollars a year not show him that he is wanted back? Does Thompson have to convince Donald Driver that he is wanted every year for him to return? What about Al Harris or Charles Woodson? Do they need to be convinced every year that the Packers really want them back? Is that why Rob Davis retired? Did Thompson not let our longtime long snapper feel that he was wanted? If a guy needs to be wooed and convinced to come back and play doesn’t that make you question his desire a little bit? Or have you forgotten Favre’s interview at the start of the 2006 season when he said point blank “If its late in the game and the game is on the line do I want the ball in my hands? I don’t know.” I remember being stunned when I heard that quote and wondering what had happened to him.
and you would look very stupid in purple!
Well I can agree with you there too. I quote Gilbert Brown in the pregame for a Packers/Vikings game at Lambeau in December on Sunday Night ESPN, “Grown ass men wearing purple (shakes his head in disgust)”

I believe that much of the blame for the Favre-Thompson rift lies on Favre’s doorstep, but I do not find the logic regarding a new GM wanting his own QB so hard to get. One of the draft websites did an interesting article making this very point: Article
I agreed with much of the rest of your post, but just wanted to clear the air on the GM wanting his own QB thing. It is a natural instinct as a manager to want your own coach and QB. Favre had the reputation, the salary, and the clout to stay indefinitely, but that does not necessarily mean that Thompson was thrilled about having someone else’s QB, who was more on the way out than up in his career.
good point
I’ll agree its not uncommon for a GM to want his own QB and coach but with a legend at QB I don’t see much motivation to get rid of the old QB to get your own. But I will concede that point.

Thompson should go!!!!!
Brett should’ve never left but Ted is on a mission to make OUR team HIS team. First Brett then KGB, looks like Tauscher is next and what about next year. Who you willing to give up? Kampman, Jennings, Clifton, Brett will always have my loyalty. He has never lied to the fans but good ol Ted has every reason to. He EARNED the right to go out on his own, so what he changed his mind last year, big deal. What would you do to keep your life intact, not just your job, which you never lost to begin with. Ted replaced him!!!!!! Now TED and McCarthy need to go!! What kind of careers would they have had without #4???
