Around the NFL; Tony Ugoh, Donte Stallworth, Christian Okoye, and the NFL Draft
- The Colts owner, Jim Irsay, thinks his young LT Tony Ugoh is lazy? Irsay is quickly becoming one of my least favorite owners. Back in April he decided to stick it to the city of Indianapolis (see here and here) when the cost projection on the new Lucas Oil Stadium came up $5 million short.
- Cleveland WR Donte Stallworth was sentenced to 30 days in jail for manslaughter. That might sound light, but I trust the judge and prosecutor knew this was the right thing to do. On the field, he was a bust in Cleveland last season and I don't expect him to play in the NFL again.
- Sweet! An interview with ex-Chiefs RB Christian Okoye.
- The NFL draft is moving May? I don't want to wait that long!

Re: Stallworth's jail sentence
A momentary lapse in reason found me listening to Dan Patrick this am on the way in to work and he was attempting to make hay about this issue by comparing Stallworth’s sentence to Michael Vick’s, considering the former killed a person while the latter killed dogs.
I guess Dan doesn’t grasp the simple notion of criminal justice that as a society we punish most severely those who commit crimes intentionally (and particularly egregiously, such as Vick did), and least severely those who commit crimes without any intent of doing so, i.e., accidentally.
After all, it’s pretty difficult to deter people from committing accidents, no matter how severely you threaten to punish them.

exactly the same argument I've made regarding criticism of Vick's sentence
When someone like Stallworth makes a horrible decision in the moment and the result takes a life that is different than someone who makes daily decisions to behave the way that Vick did. Choosing repeatedly to engage in criminal behavior over the course of multiple years is different than making a one time bad decision. I’m not suggesting that those “one time decisions” don’t deserve to be punished…and severely…but criminal behavior is just that…behavior. Now someone like Leonard Little, on the other hand, has clearly demonstrated that he is also engaging in criminal behavior by repeatedly making those decisions.
Frye is honestly gotta be one of the top 10 3rd Stringers in all of the NFL right now--colbyb

This was, of course, a reprehensible tragedy.
However, with that being said, I’ve been very impressed with compassion and maturity displayed by Mr. Stallworth throughout this ordeal. He was co-operative, remorseful, and I have no doubt that he will never allow himself to be put in this situation again.
With regards to the sentence, consider this: his prior record was spotless, his crime was an accident, and the victim’s family is much better off with a fat settlement. What good would Stallworth serving 10+ years do them? The settlement allows both parties to move forward.
There is a categorical difference between Stallworth and the likes of Pacman, Plaxico, Tank, and Chris Henry, repeat offenders/thugs, who’s life will sadly be punctuated by bad judgment and unruly behavior. And Brandon, I disagree. I think we’ll see him back in the NFL. Not only do I think we will, but I hope we do. He effed up real bad, but his actions in the aftermath clearly indicate that he deserves a second chance.

CIB mess
Jim irsay is one of the best owners in the NFL. The CIB made their own mess even after Mr. Irsay chipped in millions toward lucas oil stadium. That is why the CIB is no longer around.

Good to know
Since I’m not a Colts fan I’m not aware of all of Jim Irsay’s good work. Maybe the Irsay name will always be tarnished for me because of “The Move”. But his refusal to chip in $5 million now on a stadium deal he’ll make millions on, when city and state governments are in a severe budget crisis, looks bad.

Robert Irsay
Jim Irsay’s father was always one of my least favorite owners.
