The big five
The big five of two years ago is set to come back...
Two years ago, necessity gave way to the big five. The offensive personnel that saw Brett Favre with five eligible receivers and an empty backfield. The reason that it came about was that the pack was incompetent with the run. We would pass on every 3 and 2 situation that there was. Last year, the big five wasn't used as much partly because of injuries especially to James Jones (I expect a break out year from him). With a healthy receiving corp, i expect to see this used some time this upcoming year. Let's just hope Ryan Grant can run well enough that we don't have to use this on third and short anymore.

Love the big 5
I can’t wait to Rodgers picking apart defenses in this formation. With Jones back healthy, and an improved Nelson the big 5 is going to be scary for teams.
Works some times
But it scares me because it makes them vulnerable on the pass rush. Rodgers is all alone back there. They can’t use it very often.
big 5
I agree… I don’t see the Pack using the big 5 much if at all! Rodgers is just too valuable and to this point still a little inexperienced facing blitzing. If they use the big 5 Rodgers will get blitzed to death. We just can’t afford to risk him w/ that formation, yet! Maybe in another year or two, and if Brohm or Flynn step up alot in camp and we have more faith in them.
Favre had like 14 years in the NFL, w/ all that experience he had a huge advantage reading defenses and recognizing blitzes!
but
you can torch a D if they blitz and Rodgers get the ball out quick!!!
Exactly
And Rodgers generally does get the ball out quick. He didn’t seem to struggle with blitzes at last year, and having 5 wr’s and more options will make it easier to get it out of there quick.

I seem to remember
One of the few knocks against Rodgers last year was holding the ball too long.
But, that was last year.
The glass is more than half-full.
Tight Ends
I wish the Packers had a TE who would be a major producer—or that one of the anonymous mass would suddenly become one.
Keep an eye on Jermichael Finley
He had some big receiving games in college (at Texas), although his ceiling might only be Bubba Franks v.2.0. He was a 3rd round pick in 2008 who came out early and he just turned 22, so he’s got a lot of time left to develop. He might still need another season to develop, but if he is going to be a good TE, 2009 or 2010 should be the year.
He's got more speed than Franks though.
The real question from my perspective is if he’s got the brains to learn his whole job and keep his mouth shut long enough to develop his talent.

I don't think they've got the OL to run the big 5 regularly.
Rodgers can beat the blitz if it comes. He can’t beat his OL blowing an assignment or getting their feet crossed up.

O-Line
If the O-Line solidifies then the Big 5 can come back. Aaron can handle the blitzers.
Big 5 tells the D-Line exactly what to do. If the O-line can’t handle it then Aaron will get hurt.
I prefer a single back with 4 wide outs. It should keep the D-line guessing.
