Nick Collins' Prediction for 2009

S Nick Collins was one of a few Packers that spent some time this summer training in Florida with IMG. While he was there, IMG conducted a brief interview with him. Here's his prediction for next season:

Predictions for 2009-2010… I think we’re under the radar right now, and I think the guys like it that way. We can go out there and just ball. For me, my goal is to be the best safety in the league. Picks, sacks, whatever. Defensive Player of the Year is my goal. Three touchdowns will be tough to match, but I want to break the record. I’m trying to get five touchdowns. I played running back in high school, so once the ball is in my hand, I know what to do with it. It’s just natural.

Hey Nick...

If you want to be Defensive Player of the Year, don’t you think it would be a SMART move to learn the new D? Not that anyone ever said anything about you being SMART… Kinda hard to be the Defensive Player of the Year, when you don’t know the Defense well enough to make the calls and adjustments for the Defense, don’t you think???

Guess we can conclude from this that you have physical talent, but might not have the MENTAL talent needed… LEARN the Defense and talk about TEAM goals, not Personal goals, then we might care if want to be Defensive Player of the Year!!!!

wrong

nfl players base their job on personal goals and stats, that is how the contracts are built…so they get paid more money. as a fan i am all for nick wanting to score 5 touchdowns, i hope he scores 10 to be honest. if you aren’t at the interview maybe he was asked about goals for himself.
and why rip his smarts? he went to school for 4 years and got a degree, which is much more than 95% of the nfl players can say

He's a 10.

A wonderlic of 10 will cause some to question his “smarts”. Don’t know if he got his degree or not, most NFL players don’t, but even if he did he will have trouble learning the new D! The Bates/Sanders D was FAR easier than Capers D and it took him till year 4 to excel at it, he won’t have nearly that long to excel in the Caper 34!!!

I am fine if he has personal goals, but in a TEAM sport the only goals I really care about are TEAM goals. If he happens to score 5 TD’s thats only a good thing to me if the TEAM wins!!!

Wow

Five touchdowns as a goal for a defensive player…. THAT is some heavy ambition. There are WRs and RBs who fail to get five in a season.

He had an incredible season last year. However, I would be simply thrilled with late-game, shut-down, assignment perfect defense late in games with the lead. :-)

Well he's not wrong

For better or worse, getting interceptions and returning them for TDs is what gets you into the Pro Bowl. He has no chance at becoming defensive player of the year without gaudy stats.

But Strohman is right; there isn’t a lot of talk about making his team or teammates better. The way he avoided all the voluntary practices, it doesn’t look like the team is the first thing on his mind. But he clearly did miss some time this spring and summer due to the death of his father, so as long as he’s not holding out from training camp, I’m willing to give him a pass on everything that’s happened since the end of last season. There should still be time during training camp and the preseason to learn the defense.
