Monday Practice

Hope everyone was able to make it out to a beautiful Monday afternoon practice.   A couple of observations that I made today while watching the second half of practice:

1.  Nick Barnett looked healthy taking snaps in noncontact drills and 7 on 7 drills.  All of his movements were fluid, moving well out of breaks in coverage,  accelerating towards the ball carriers on every play, looking like he was ready to go for the season.  Also Barnett had a chip on his shoulder that comes from being out of the game for 9 months.  It would be nice for him to keep this chip and put it to good use this season.

2. AJ Hawk spent most of his time in 7 on 7, 11 on 11 drills working with the second team defense.  The first team LB's were Kampman, Barnett, Chilar, and Poppinga.  When Barnett was not on the field Hawk filled in for Barnett and looked akward.  Several times the 2nd and 3rd team offense was able to make plays to the TE over the middle with Hawk out of position.  Overall it seems that he is still thinking too much on the field and not reacting to what is going on in front of him.

3. Brett Swain is a NFL caliber reciever.  He made a couple of very nice catches against the first team D and showed he can go get the ball over a defender with his size and strength.  If they can hide him on the practice squad again it would be a shock.  He has the skill set  to be on an NFL team.

4.  No need to worry about Mason Crosby.  He made every kick during ST drills near the end of practice with ease.  One that stands out is a kick when Jarrett Bush made it around the corner to nearly block the kick and Crosby never flinched driving the kick through.

Let me know what everyone else thought about practice today!

Barnett is back

Barnett’s return is the top thing that jumped out at me. And the Justin Harrell thing, not that I was counting on him.

I hate to see it happen, but that’s the reality for Hawk. He’s just not very good.

I didn’t see Brett Swain as a legitimate WR last year in training camp. Of course, that was last year. He’ll get a chance at some point during the preseason. He’s got to prove it in a game.
