Brett Favre to the Minnesota Vikings
That was quick. First Jay Glazer writes that QB Brett Favre might sign with the Minnesota Vikings in the next few weeks. Favre's buddy, Vikings' offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, is asked on Monday and says he has "no idea about it." And on Tuesday he's on his way to Minnesota to take his physical and sign with the team. Favre is indecisive and changeable indeed.

Actually
Being highly pragmatic, I actually see a big positive in Favre to the Vikes for the Packers… Aaron Rodgers will have a chance to face a big pressure game and grow from it before getting to a playoff game. Everyone knows how much will be on his shoulders in that game— if he plays excellent despite the pressure of facing “Brett Favre, Packer legend”, then we will know that he is for real and can lead us somewhere big. If he wilts, best for us to know that as soon as possible.
I do not understand why you are against this signing— you have a big doughnut hole at QB right now…
yeah except...
we already signed Rodgers to a six year deal. So if he wilts and we know he can’t lead us somewhere big, as you say, it doesn’t really make a difference.
I still think that the matching will benefit Rodgers now
Let’s be honest, were this to have happened last season, the pressure could have hampered Rodger’s development. Now, all it can do is give him the experience of pressure performance.
He is ready. I hear what you are saying about the contract signing… but even were he to fail in his matching with Brett, I think that he’d learn from the failure.
Thanks Favre
You have created a storm in MN, and Childress will be swept away while the rest of the team will be left picking up after another dissappointing season in MN.
Yes, yes Packer fan........
…….because Green Bay’s scintillating 6-10 season was the exact opposite of “disappointing”, right?
Puh-leeze.
Adding a dynamic (albeit aging and mistake-prone) veteran quarterback to a team that won the division and got in to the playoffs WITHOUT A QUARTERBACK last season probably has less “disappointment” to worry about than fans of a team that finished 6-10 and didn’t get any better does.
Jealous much?

That actually was the most "opinion" driven portion of my comment.
I don’t see them as having gotten any better than last season but I’m sure Packer fans who follow the team more closely may disagree.

Well then, after admitting your ignorance,

Actually......
I never claimed “ignorance”, I simply stated that Packer fans (because it is your team after all) would probably feel different than a non-fan about their teams offseason signings, drafted players and overall potential for the upcoming season.
400 metres, I understand that the fans of a team that just finished 6-10 and out of the playoffs last season and the former followers of the QB who last took them to the NFC championship game and is now the QB of the divison rival that won that same division and made it to the playoffs would be bitter and angry but still…….
……. sticking your nose in to a conversation that didn’t involve you and making a sad and petty attempt to get back at me for stating the truth only makes YOU look bad.

So, let me get this straight:
(1) stating that people who actually follow a team “closely” may “disagree” with your wholly uninformed opinion that the Packers have done nothing in the offseason to improve themselves is not an admission that you really don’t know what you’re talking about (although in the end of your comment, your fact-less opinion has evolved magically into “the truth” somehow); and
(2) my pointing out this contradiction as stated by a Vikings fan who came to a Packers fan blog for no apparent reason other than to stir whatever pot exists in your imagination, makes me “bitter and angry” and somehow doesn’t mean you are, in fact, just projecting your own insecurities onto us; and
(3) I’m “sticking my nose in to [sic] a conversation that didn’t involve” me and acting “sad and petty” when I point out how your self-admitted uninformed opinions are nothing more than the petty cheap shots your own signature makes a point of disparaging.

Wow. Speaking of "misinformed".... where did you get the assumption that I'm a Viking fan?
Try not to project your own “insecurities” on me.
If I were a Viking fan, I’d think YOU extremely insecure, petty and jealous that a comment that I made sure to note as opinion could work you up enough for a personal attack.
But no, you’re not insecure at all about your team, right?
Can you see me chuckling and rolling my eyes through the internet?

Frankly, I don't give a shit who or what you are a fan of,
the point is that you’re clearly not a fan of the Packers, but you still found your way to a Packers fan blog and utilized your time here to take cheap shots at Packer fans despite sporting a signature that decries exactly that type of behavior.
So not only are you a sad, pathetic troll, but you’re also lacking in even the most basic level of self-awareness.

For me
I do not look forward to one of amy all time favorite Packers running on the field with a purple #4 on his back. It just plain sucks. With the play action passing and with Peterson this is an offense Brett can excel in. He will not have to do it all to win. I just hope our new 3-4 defense is up to stopping the viqueens for two wins.
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).
Everybody knew it was just a matter of time before Favre flip-flopped again. I think all the Vick coverage was the final straw. IMO, Favre got jealous of all the TV time Vick was getting and decided he needed some of his own. It has been like clockwork for the last 5 years. As soon as ESPN stops saying anything about #4, it is usually no more than a week or 2 until he causes a commotion again.
"I agree but dont agree"
Favre--Childress
Favre will show why he needed to stay retired…and a 4-12 record will send Childress to “The Promised Land”…like maybe Oakland as an assistant; or to beat the hell out of Cable just to stir things up..
I'm sorry....
Did you say 4-12? That is plain ridiculous – doesn’t even deserves justification….. Just plain ridiculous.
4-12 is an exaggeration, but anything less than 1 playoff win should be enough to cost Childress his job.

Okay--Okay
Probably 8-8 at best….Favre will NOT LAST a season in Mn. I just don’t see it happening. Truth be known…..I would love to see him win the Super Bowl this year…and I am a Packer’s Fan for over 50 years !!! I think Adrian Peterson is the best back in football; and the defense is tough….I just don’t see Favre staying healthy all year. I really hope I am wrong—-Because he is/was the greatest thing to ever happen in Green Bay—next to Reggie White !!
After the Packers retire Jersey # 4
…they should randomly trot it out and let other quarterbacks wear it at unexpected times until they finally really retire it.

Good For Him
Why does everyone keep analyzing B. Favre’s decisions based on what is right for everyone except B. Favre? Look at all of this from his perspective. He gets to play another year of football; a game which he loves to play. He gets paid $12,000,000 for six months of work which isn’t work so much as a strenuous hobby. He gets a chance to stick it to his old foreman and the foreman’s boss who decided that he wasn’t good enough anymore to work for them (but didn’t want him to work for anyone else, either.)
All this talk of him spoiling his legacy is crap. Would anyone say the same thing if we heard that KGB was coming out of retirement to play for another team? Legacy doesn’t buy lawn tractors, pay for swimming pool filters, or give B. Favre a reason to get out of bed.

when we are several years removed from all this...
we will think of Favre as a Packer, just like McMahon was a Bear, Montana a 49er, and so on.
May the wind be always at your back, and may your placekicker have icewater in his veins.
"All this talk of him spoiling his legacy is crap."
Who exactly is this comment directed at?
No one here has once stated Favre should stay retired to keep his legacy intact.
If anything, it seems most Packers fans seem to relish the confrontation.
And your perspective that Favre left the Pack because the latter “decided that he wasn’t good enough anymore to work for them (but didn’t want him to work for anyone else, either.)” is simplistic and stupid. Favre retired and the Packers moved on. By the time he decided to unretire, the Packers had invested in another person for the most important position in the sport of football. If you think the Packers were truly foolish in this decision, why not defend that position on the facts rather than uninformed, cliched opinions?
"the facts" are a lot fuller and more complex than your telling
I don’t think your position is based on facts given the way you recount them. I’d also say that your retelling is a bit of a cliche and uninformed.
". . .not good enough. . ."
The NFL is a bottom-line driven league. Bottom line means money and wins both. If the GBP truly thought that Favre was still better than Rogers then they would have found a way to keep him assuming rational self-interest was their guiding principle. The Packers staff (and I) seemed to believe that all things considered, they were better off moving on to Rogers as starting QB. However the Packers also tried to prevent him from playing for a division foe. That sends a contadictory message to us, the fans; Favre isn’t good enough to play for us, but we fear him playing for another team. Personally I would prefer the other NFC North teams to be stocked with QBs who aren’t good enough to start. It is worth remembering the Packers had some very strict provisions in their trade agreement with the Jets discouraging them from trading him to a NFC North rival.
As to the whole retirement timeline, I still haven’t heard a version from the varied parties that I fully believe so I won’t debate that issue. If any of this blog’s readers have some inside information we would all prefer to learn the truth so by all means, enlighten us. As to the straw man argument that I believe going with Rogers instead of Favre was foolish, I can’t seem to find that assertion so I’ll ignore it for now.
The legacy issue- everytime someone says or writes that they don’t wish to see Favre wearing another team’s uniform thats legacy. Those “We’ll never forget you, Brent” t-shirts smack of a jilted boyfriend pretending that he doesn’t care about his ex anymore. Look to the posters who recommend issuing the “4” jersey to various rookie nobodies. Just because nobody in this thread addressed that issue doesn’t make it less true or make “legacy” mentions forbidden.
Favre is being held to a different standard than other, lesser, players who have left the team and went to play for a rival. Personally I’m looking forward to seeing him play against the Packers this year. His aging body and questionable decision-making may work to GB’s favor though he is unquestionably an upgrade to their current talent level.
For pity’s sake, we need to stop worshiping athletes, realize that the NFL is just another business, and enjoy the product without fetishizing it.
Thanks for the fair and well thought out response
However, I struggle with the mentality that somehow the Packers didn’t really think Rodgers was capable of putting up the numbers he did last year and only wanted to stick it to Favre by trading him. Isn’t Rodgers’ success testament to the fact that the coaches truly believed that he was ready for primetime?
Furthermore, it’s common for any team in any professional sport to keep their star players from going to divisional rivals if they have any contractual power to do so. I am also a fan of the Packers and didn’t find this behavior remotely contradictory, because the team wasn’t saying Favre was incapable of playing any longer, they just felt that with factors such as Rodgers being ready to be the starting quarterback, the long term need to establish a new starting quarterback in the wake of Favre’s age and retirement, and the fact that Rodgers’ contract would be up at the end of the 2008 season required that transition to happen when it did.
I also never presented your asserted “straw” argument. You stated that the Packers discarded Favre because he “wasn’t good enough for them or anyone else”, which I asked that you back up with facts. Clearly, you are wrong regarding the Packers’ belief that Favre couldn’t play for anyone else, since they traded him to the Jets, nor, were the circumstances different regarding Rodgers, would the Packers have likely felt it was appropriate to play the 2008 season without him. However, considering the actual circumstances the team faced as Favre played his game of retire-unretire-retire, and the promise that Rodgers was clearly exhibiting to those actually in the know (i.e., the coaches and management), created a situation where it was time for Favre to go and play elsewhere for the betterment of the overall team.
After all, are there many more teams more set at the quarterback position right now then the Packers? And that’s one year removed from the departure of a hall-of-famer. This turn of events is why I’m baffled by all the hatred toward the team regarding how they handled Favre.
We agree more than disagree. . .
I agree with you that it certainly seemed like time for the Packers to move on to a new starting QB. Favre had gotten into a bad habit of poor-decision making, especially in tight games near the end. Rogers has looked very good since he became the starter. What a steal he worked himself into becoming. Hopefully the injuries he had the first few years were just flukes. Today, I would probably pick Rogers over Favre even if we discard the age and injury issues.
Is Favre a prima donna? Perhaps. Lets see you or I spend the last twenty+ years of our lives with everyone around us whispering in our ears that we’re the greatest thing to come around since beer and bacon were invented. Then give us millions of dollars to play sports, professionally pampering us at every turn. Name roads after us, have John Madden’s declare his everlasting love. Jeesh. Its a wonder these guys don’t get worse than they do. With that treatment it’s no wonder the league’s stars end up like they do. What a letdown it must be to just go home one January day knowing that you’ll never do it again. For most NFL players they don’t have a choice in the matter. That third blown ACL or high-grade shoulder separation remove any illusions for most that they have a choice whether or not to continue their career. I recall Eric Dickerson coming to Green Bay desperate to keep playing, only to fail his physical and sent home on the next plane. Gilbert Brown needed his biceps tendon repaired but he knew that he was on his last season and chose to gut it out, playing out the year with a messed-up arm.
These guys become just what we turn them into with our irrational worship of pro athletes in particular, and celebrities in general. So, do I wish that Favre would just quit and go home? No I don’t. He should play for anyone who wants him as long as he can because once you’re done for real, you’re done forever. I just hope that he sucks when he plays against Green Bay. The trouble is, if Favre buys into a low-risk passing philosophy, avoids injury or wearing down late in the season, and Peterson runs as well as he has these last few years then the NFC North is in for some ass-whippings offensively. We had better hope that this 3-4 scheme works some magic.
Favre is being held to a different standard than other, lesser, players who have left the team and went to play for a rival.
I think this is because Favre was held to a different standard than other, lesser players. From management and fans he was certainly held to a different standard. Brett had to be made to feel wanted every offseason to cajole him into returning. I don’t recall anyone doing that for someone else. I don’t recall the stands being littered with Sharper or Longwell jerseys, or people buying books that both he and his entire family put out for any other player, or supporting him through his addiction issues. That is why he is held to a different standard.
Frye is honestly gotta be one of the top 10 3rd Stringers in all of the NFL right now--colbyb
different standards
I agree that Favre was given looser reins than many other players. That is how every industry treats its stars; its just the cost of doing business. Team leadership made well-informed decisions based on rational self-interest when the chose to treat him as they did. In return Favre did his thing until the team decided that the cost-benefit analysis had tipped too far towards the cost and too far away from the benefit. That is when they told him “No thanks” to the unretirement. It was just good sense from the Packers’ point of view to trade him to a team that they wouldn’t likely face while he was still playing, and to get maximum value via trade.
I think most of this whole shindig going on now is the fault of the fans, building players up to be more than they are as well as the sports media playing along. We build them up into what we want to see and be and are often shocked when we find out they are just like us in many ways. This fall on Sundays when Favre puts on the purple shirt he will be just another QB with average mobility, erratic judgement under pressure, lots of experience, and a strong arm.
revisit
I can not help but think it might be time to ask the NFL to revisit the tampering charge the packers filed against the Vi-Queens last year and see if there is a draft pick we can wrestle out of them. It is now quite obvious this is NOT a new idea this year nor was it last year.
I look forward to Nick Barnett screwing Bret into the ground and ending this circus permanantly.
That being said the PACK should never retire this traitor"s number. This is all about revenge. As it was last year when he wanted his outright release to play for the Vi-Queens who were obviously tampering since the day he “retired” from Green Bay
Farve
I can’t wait to play against Brett “Follie” Farve. Will be interesting how many boo’s he will get when he walks onto Lambeau Field… Legacy …. yah right … I have long forgotten about Brett Farve, All he wants is revenge (how petty),,, Attention (spoiled ole brat)… And he is running out of the kind of money for the standard of living he was used to for so long. I agree with many about retiring his jersey what for he didnt retire with the Packers. Let some other player wear it I say. Go Pack Go!!!! Rogers Rules !!!

There is nothing wrong with having a different opinion at all
Please show me where I said otherwise. Discussion is always welcome. You said that you came here to hear the views and opinions of a teams fans who would be intricately involved with this subject. You gave your opinion, a counter was presented, and instead of using reason and explaining your stance (which, btw, I can buy the argument that the Vikings have a good shot at the division…if you present it), you started complaining that everyone was jumping on you.
Its not all Vikings fans that we take issue with, there are a few Daily Norsemen that drop by from time to time and they are welcome. Present yourself properly and be prepared to have a discussion. There was a bunch of internal debate here last year obviously. As long as the defense for your opinion was more than just “He’s Brett-Freakin-Favre! He can do what he wants!” I can accept that position. Just present the argument

Arod
I’d take Rodgers this season over Favre, Cutler, or Culpepper/Stafford. Fantasy wise, or win wise, the Packers are the class of the division. With Williams sisters in legal trouble, it’d be a huge blow if they’re suspended the first four games. Then games 6, 7, 8 agaist BAL, @PIT, @GB respectively, it’ll be very hard to get out of midseason in any kind of playoff form. I doubt Brett is good enough to pull out some 3-1 or 4-0 record in the first month. What’s his record on turf?
I like the signing because it’ll put extra spark to the season. Since I can only remember Majik-man (hah) before Brett, there’s lots of ties. Favre isn’t the QB godsend, very far from it. He’s the ironman, best record is the games played. Packers can beat MIN or CHI this season if penalties are kept to a minimum.
PS we shouldn’t get as many secondary penalties this season.
Thank you for the excellent posting
Rodgers will show he is the best QB in the North and maybe the NFC. Brett vs Aaron, Master vs Apprentice! Good point about penalties as well—consistent pass rush will help offset those
Dreaming of Trip to Miami
Thank-you Ted Thompson you are a football genius they say. You could have gave Brett the respect he earned and let him returned as a starter last year, who knows maybe you would have won the division last year. Aaron Rodger is the best quarterback, maybe on your team. Brett will have the best player in his back field that he has ever had. Packer defense bring 7 or 8 men in the box to stop Peterson. Mr Favre will show u Percy Harvin
and his explosive speed. Mr Farve does not have to carry this team like in his prime, when I coach him at Green Bay. Your mistake is are gain. So Packer Fans enjoy your memories of the Favre Glory days. As you watch us win the Super Bowl.
