If I could get everyone's opinion

First off Packers, congratulations for kicking our sorry behind for the past three years now. 1-5 against you, wow Brad what will you do next? Oh that's right, you're gonna sign a 40  year old QB who feels the need to formally retire and then unretire until he reaches his goal of playing with all 32 NFL teams. I for one, hope this was not a bad move. I mean I know I'm walking into unwanted territory. As a Vikings fan, I have heard some people are really pissed about Favre signing with the Vikings, and some others don't care, others are fans of Favre and just go where ever he does. Some people are like "All they needed was a QB, they have it now". I'm not so sure about that, I mean our secondary needs a lot of work. We have one good CB and three other not so good. Nothing is ever certain in the NFL and for all we know cause it seems the Packers are adjusting nicely to the 3-4 change, with a shutout against the Browns and what I thought would be a shutout last night when I went on NFL.com and you were destroying Buffalo 21 - 0. Maybe Aaron Rodgers is like Brett's second coming. Point I'm trying to make here is I want to know what the Packer fans think of Brett signing with the Vikings. Thanks.

Well

I think you summed up the major camps. I didn’t care when he went to the Jets, it just felt kind of sad. Going to the Vikings however seems like a petty move, and I don’t believe he’s doing it because he wants to help the Vikings win, or anything like that. I think he has all the wrong motives. I took down my old Favre posters, and even though he was my childhood hero, I’m hoping to see him do poorly against the Packers this year. It’s not a revenge thing, I just would find it hard to swallow if he threw up a great game against the Pack. Ultimately, I’m going to try and ignore him as much as possible and cheer on the Packers, and Rodgers, who looks like he may be as good as Favre ever was, without all the drama.

Feel free to perouse the site archives

Everything from last week was all about Favre, and feelings raged from unadulterated hatred to complete adoration.

Favre playing for the Vikings

I think he’s pathetic. When he ‘retired’ – the one that looked and sounded and felt like it was the real thing, I said to my S.O. “I hope he can actually do this – the retirement thing.” The fact that he is so hooked on being the ‘big deal’ wherever he goes, regardless of the way he walks on other people’s (including other players) dreams and hopes and loyalties so that he can be in the spot light just one more time is truly pathetic. I’ve had some friends say that the money he makes as a player is the reason he keeps coming back – but if there were money issues (gambling, drugs, elicit sex, etc), I think the media would have told us about that by now (since they know when he sneezes and all). He’s a pathetic ego-maniac, and he’s still 100% responsible for what comes out of his mouth and what he does to people. He’s already prepping the media for his inevitable crash later this season (“well, the arm isn’t in game shape, you know – surgery and all…” after snaps on Friday night). Brett will probably have a few great games this season – and he’ll HAVE to have one against the Packers – because he can pull that kind of stuff out of the sky every now and then – and he’ll crash along with his fans (and the Vikings latest ‘sure bet’ season) right around week 9 or 10 with poor decision-making, nagging injuries, and his arm will suddenly not have ever really been ready for the big time.
I hope that Pack Man is right – that Rodgers is every bit as good as Favre and leaves the drama at the door – only time will tell.
Here’s to a great season – - -

Brett Favre is likely to be the downfall of the Vikings this year.
Here are some of the reasons why:

In his final nine years in Green Bay (after Mike Holmgren left), Favre played on numerous teams that were as good as the team that he is with this season (most of them had better pass defense than Minnesota’s and better o-lines than I think your team has shown), yet he couldn’t get back to the Super Bowl with even one of them; so, there is no realistic reason to think that he will be the difference maker in that regard this year, either.
One of the reasons for this is that none if his coaches after Holmgren has ever had the balls to keep him reigned in and force him to stick to the true west coast offense game plan.
Brad Childress has not only already shown that he will do nothing less than capitulate to Favre’s every whim, he actually seems to have his lips glued to Favre’s posterior.
For that matter, IMO, Childress has been an abettor and an enabler to Favre in regards to Brett’s desires and intentions to avoid any and all off-season activities, conditioning and otherwise, with his teammates.
The following two things go hand-in-hand with that.
As Favre has gotten older, he has become seriously more and more aloof with his teammates, with whom he has pretty much nothing in common; thus, he will not develope any chemistry with them (with his offensive mates, at least, that is very important).

Joke coming.

Back when he was stalling the media, the fans and, possibly, the Vikings,
Favre threw passes to a high school team.
Still no word on why he was training with the Lions.

Back to being serious – as he has continued to age, over the past four seasons, that lack of real off-season conditioning has resulted in a 3:2 TD:INT ratio prior to Thanksgiving, followed by a ratio somewhere in the neighborhood of 2:5 after Turkey Day.
That isn’t just last year; that is the past four seasons!
Finally, on top of all that, if/when he does suffer an injury (at any point during the season) that doesn’t force him to miss a start, you can bet your sweet bippy that he will not sit himself, even if his resultant level of play is detrimental to the team.
He has proven that in the past, even before he was guilty of it last year.

A political humorist back in the 1970s (Art Buchwald, I think, but I’m not sure) had an excellent column one day near the end of Richard Nixon’s administration, in which he parodied Dr. Suess’ ‘Marvin K. Mooney Will You Please Go Now’ to fit Nixon (You can leave on a zike-bike if you like).
I’d like to see it re-done to apply to Favre.

To borrow a groaner from Groucho Marx:
Don’t leave in a huff, Brett; leave in a minute and a huff.
If you can’t leave in a minute and a huff, leave in a taxi.

What I meant to post was
…none if his coaches after Holmgren has ever had the balls to keep him reigned in…

the lone exception to that, of course, was Mike McCarthy in 2007.

Il never hate favre

But his constant changing of his mind drives us nuts he has become a joke who you cant trust. I think vike fans will not have the savior they thought your oline while good is not as good as years past your are correct about secondary without whitfield it would be just average.

Good move

It was the best move you guys could make. He is 40 years old, and now has some durability questions but he is an upgrade from Sage and Jackson. I personally don’t like Favre anymore because of everything that’s transpired these past two years.

Thank you for admitting that about your secondary. A lot of Vikings don’t want to admit it, but the secondary really is iffy. I watched the Chiefs drive 75 yards on you guys and score a TD. (Passing the majority of the way) Of course it’s only preseason and Allen was out, and he helps out the pass defense big time. I think without Birk, and with Loadholt (who is a suspect pass blocker) your o-line won’t be as good as next years.

You guys still have a good team though, and it should be a battle when we play each other.

Probably in the minority

I’m pretty ambivalent about Favre to be honest. I wasn’t too broken up when he went to NY last year. I didn’t want him to go to Minnesota last year, but a year removed, I don’t mind.

As long as he has his fastball, Favre can play in the league. He could still be a top 10 guy, but at age 40, its also possible that he could decline in a hurry. I honestly don’t know how long he can hold off age, but if he looks 40 and has 10 TDs and 15 picks at the halfway point, it should be an interesting story.

Thoughts on Brett

I didn’t want to see him sign in MN. It wasn’t cause I thought he was the missing link, nor cause I thought he was a super bowl caliber QB…I just didn’t want to see my fav QB from the past 15 years of my life dressed in purple. See I live in the Twin Cities, but I am a Cheesehead to the death. I married a Viking fan and most of my friends are Viking fans. I listen to KFAN daily and ready your papers. I know a LOT about the Vikings…more than most of my friends. I don’t think Favre is your missing link. You need a QB that can be proficient but one that isn’t going to turn the ball over which is the one thing that can stop Peterson. You’ve got the right idea with a vet QB, just the wrong one. Favre is who he is…Childress isn’t going to reign him in and make him someone he isn’t. He knows how to read D’s great but is a risk taker to his death. When the pressure is applied he is no longer that guy that always put up his best numbers then. He lost a little of that quick release that allowed him to make those snap decisions and win more often than lose. Honestly, I think this experiment is going to end badly both for the Vikings and Favre.

NorthStarr is right on

I’m happy Brett signed on with the Vikes. Just take another look at NorthStarr’s stats. I believe if you go back 10 seasons…November and December have been awful for No. 4.

Ya

I’ve seen stats from other people on the Bears blog, and since 2000 his stats have declined at the end of the year.

Secondary for the Vikings...

Isn’t really that bad. But the thing is that their strength is tackling and most people don’t really count that. In terms of pass defense they are pretty medium as far as teams go but you don’t have 6th ranked defense with total crap secondary, plain and simple.

Defense is the strength of the team and they will live and die by it. As much as people want to go crazy over the Favre signing there is no team in this league that relies less on QB play than the Vikings. Favre just gives them a chance at coming back in games and taking more shots downfield. If the Vikings are going to be good it will be AD running hard, defense smothering opposing teams, and the ability to pass into 8 and 9 man fronts.

It is going to have little to do with Favre dropping back and disecting D’s with 30+ passes a game. Favre really is only needed when they are behind and to keep the D’s honest out there. He is not the main attraction on the field, just in the media.

Great secondary

The addition of Jared Allen helped them a lot, and they should be good again in 2009. Their corners are very good and the only weak link was Darren Sharper, who just doesn’t have the speed to cover deep anymore, and they replaced him with their 2nd round pick from last season, Tyrell Johnson.

by Brandon on Aug 26, 2009 11:32 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta disagree at some points

The addition of Allen helped you guys a TON. Without him, your secondary would still probably still be ranked in the high 20’s. With that being said, your pass defense was still only 18th in the league last year. Too me that is not very good at all, especially when you take into account how good your d-line is. You might respond back with, “Well teams pass on us much more because our run defense is so dominant, therefore making our pass defense stats appear worse.” Too which I’ll answer, the Steelers run defense is just as dominant as yours, and teams attempted to pass against them more then you guys, and they still managed to have the 1st ranked pass defense in the league. Winfield is good. M Williams is good. Griffin is good against the run, and average in coverage. T Johnson is solid, though he got burned deep a few times last season, and looked lost out there somethimes (though that;s expected in your rookie season). Where you guys really get into trouble is your nickle backs. Sapp isn’t very good, and McCauley is probably the worst in coverage on your whole team. When teams go 3 WRs against you guys, the pass defense really begins to struggle. (Example: Eagles last year in the playoffs. After they tried running on you guys and it wasn’t working, they went shotgun with McNabb pretty much every play, and he went on to throw for 300 yards.) The addition of A. Allen could help you guys, but I haven’t heard much about him so far this offseason. I think the loss of Sharper will actually hurt you guys. He might have been a little slow, but he lacked in athleticism, he made up for with veteranism (haha probably not a word) and intelligence. He rarely gave up the deep ball for you guys.

The secondary will probably be improved for you guys this year though with Griffin getting another year of experience under his belt. I do think when you guys lose games it will be because of the pass defense though. Which is why I’m optimistic we can compete with you guys.

question is...

Can the Vikes control the clock more now with Brett and hide the few deficiencies in the pass defense more than last year. I think that so… And that, along with the extra year experience and the removal of Shaprer will help them statistically. How it translates to wins is yet to be seen. Statistically, yes its preseason, they are number 1 so far.

“Can the Vikes control the clock more now with Brett and hide the few deficiencies in the pass defense more than last year.”

They should be able too. Your offense should be pretty good this year.

Obviously I am excited about the prospect of this year. I think the Vikes have improved. I think the Pack has improved. And to some extent, I think the Bears have improved even though probably not as much as others might think. The NFC North is no longer to be laughed at.

It will be an exciting year and I, like you, look forward to the two Vikes/Pack matchups and hope thye live up to the billing.
