Minnesota Vikings at Lambeau Field questions

Hi Packer Nation! I love the blog! Just as I love the Daily Norseman, Acme Packaging Company is a great place for me to get info and views on the green and gold. I am a longtime peeper and first time poster that will be joining many of you at Lambeau for the Vikings game accompanied with my girlfriend on November 1st. I am looking for a few questions to be answered since I have never been to your beautiful city.

#1 - I heard that Milwaukee gets 2 home games a year. First off, is this true? Secondly, is this a Milwaukee game? Thirdly, how are the fans compared to the Green Bay fans?

#2 - What are some good restaurants in and around Green Bay that you would recommend? I would like all of your favorites…Cheap places as well as steakhouses. I would like to try a few of them!

#3 - We are staying in the The Holiday Inn City Centre. Would you recommend us taking a shuttle, or driving to the game? We will most likely bring a cooler full of beverage and probably just eat inside.

#4 - What is a good local bar to go to? I am too old for clubs. I like unique places, places that stand out, or pubs with nice beer selections.

#5 - What are some good live local bands that play around? I like rock music. Pretty much all types of rock, alternative, pop, funky, whatever. What about a good venue to see them play live?

#6 - Where is the best vantage point of the Green Bay Skyline?

#7 - How far is Door County? Is it worth going to see? We are thinking about staying there for one night.

#8 - Bloody Mary's and breakfast. Who makes the best bloody Mary, and what are some good breakfast joints?

#9 - Are there any "Best of Green Bay" sites or links that you could tell me about?

#10 - Anything else that you would recommend an out-of-towner to see or do? Historic places (non-football as well)?

Thank you all VERY MUCH for your help.
Michael Sack

This is Wisconsin...

EVERYONE has Bloody Mary’s for breakfast followed by a Miller Lite chaser, lol… In an attempt to save time, I’m just reposting what I sent a Packers fan visiting for the first time…

“Kroll’s for a butter burger. Seriously the best! I was born in Green Bay and my family is still there but I moved to Florida when I was a kid. Every time I visit the first place I go when I leave the airport is Kroll’s. Try their fried perch too…

Chili John’s is a must, Cincinnatti style chili ironically, served over spaghetti and topped with onions and cheese. I think they may have a booth at Lambeau as well. Make sure to let the Bengals fans know Green Bay does their chili better!

You might try Maricque’s for some Booyah or perch and a Bloody Mary (Miller Lite chaser optional).

As for the bars, I always like the seedy Taverns near State Street. Cropsey’s is very blue collar. You’ll probably find my drunk uncles up there during lunch. Retirement has its perks ;-) You might also try Cock & Bull, Ned Kelley’s or any of the million taverns. If you haven’t been to green Bay, taverns look like any house on the corner. Except there is a PBR or Old Style sign hanging off the front porch.

And finally, don’t forget to get some squeeky cheese curds the day you leave."

as best as i can..

1. Milwaukee getting 2 home games??? I have no clue what your talking about. Milwaukee county fans getting tickets? IDK

2. Curlys pub inside is damn good.

3. I would drive and do a little tailgate, I know it will be November and maybe cold. But you can find numerous houses that charge about $20 for parking at their house and most have porta potties and such and enjoy kicking back a few and talking football with everyone.. If its too cold I would shuttle. I believe the last time i was up there in 2007 i was told most of the parking is for season ticket holders/ permit parking. (someone correct me if i am wrong please)

Door County… You have to be into that scenary thing.. Depending on this crazy weather we have you may still have the fall colors which if you do, do it!! Its anywhere from a hour to 2 hour drive. 2 hours if you take a scenary drive and drive by the lake on up. Otherwise it is all newly 4 lanes and pretty quick. Alot of “pretty” things to go see i.e. the state park the lake some of the houses on the lake and plenty of fun in the local bars… I just wouldnt wear any purple in to them! Also plenty of tourism shops. Towns to hit.. Baileys Harbor and Sturgeon Bay are the bigger towns. Greystone restaurant in Sturgeon Bay has the best prime rib for a decent $… PC Junction in Baileys Harbor is a nice place to grab a burger

Milwaukee...

When they stopped playing in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee ticketholders had an opportunity to opt in for 2 Lambeau games a year. It’s called the Gold package or something. So for 2 games a year, Milwaukee residents are a big part of the crowd…

You are correct.

The “Gold Package” gets the annual Shrine game (one of the preseason games played at Lambeau) and home games number 2 and 5 of the regular season. This year, those games are vs. Cincinnati this Sunday and vs. Dallas on 11/15. Some people have said that they can tell the difference between the crowd at Gold package games vs. Green package games. I don’t think it’s very significant, but then again, I’ve only seen three games at Lambeau.

Door County

I have family up in Door County, so I know the area pretty well.
Fish Creek is the place to go if you’re looking to do some shopping. One of my favorite spots to grab dinner and a beer is Shipwrecked, a Brew pub in Egg Harbor on Hwy 42. And if you go up to Sister Bay, check out Al Johnson’s restaurant. Traditional scandinavian cuisine (swedish meatballs, etc.) plus they have grass on the roof, and goats wander around up there in the summer.

If you’re looking for a nice place to stay that won’t break the bank, I’d look into the Open Hearth Lodge in Sister Bay.

My grandparents live in Ephraim. Wilson’s is one of my favorite places to go anywhere.

Door County is great…your girlfriend will probably enjoy it more than you though. Its a very outdoorsy, crafty, relaxing kind of place. There are a lot of boutique places to shop, small motels and cabins, etc. Its not a place with a lot of action, but its a GREAT place to get away and see nature at its best. It all comes down to what you two enjoy on a day trip. I don’t know if much is going on in November though, the best time to go is in the fall and you would be catching the tail end of that!

Driving might be a little tricky but its part of the experience…I relate it to the State Fair in MN where everyone opens their yards up to people to park. Its a TOTALLY different atmosphere from the Dome, you should drive just for the experience.

Texwestern nailed it on the Gold and Green packages. Honestly I doubt there is THAT much of a difference and as the Gold package people give up their seats, I think they are offered to the Green package people. Doesn’t matter which game it is, its a VERY different experience than the dome. I am from WI but lived in MN now for the past 12 years. I’ve been to many games at both and honestly its way more fun at Lambeau. Feels more natural, less artificial. You will love it!
