T Jamon Meredith Signs With The Bills

It's disappointing that T Jamon Meredith, the Green Bay Packers 2009 5th round pick, was signed off the practice squad by the Buffalo Bills.

He showed some promise as a good run blocker, and he didn't appear to have any problems in pass protection. But appearances can be deceiving. During the preseason, he'd only play late in the game when the coaches were calling a lot of running plays. So his pass blocking should be graded as incomplete. If he can't pass block, then the Packers shouldn't have kept him around. His run blocking can't be considered great either since he was usually lining up against other players who didn't make it on the final roster.

The fact was he was never given a shot at beating out either T Allen Barbre or T Breno Giacomini was a good indication that he's not ready to play. If he really might have become a starting right tackle one day, we would have read something during training camp that he was pushing Barbre or Giacomini for the wide open starting right tackle job.

The Packers are expected to sign T Dane Randolph, another athletically talented underachiever, to take his place on the practice squad.

Shame

I was hoping the guy would develop into a stud…he might still…just not with the Pack.

Brandon I disagree with you assessment, particularly your assertion that just because we hadn’t read anything about him challenging for a starting spot means he probably wasn’t going to develop into a starter. He definitely wasn’t ready to play, as you say, but he had all the potential in the world. A year on the practice squad and I bet he would’ve been challenging the starters, just like Breno did.

A tough break, but I’m not sure he would’ve helped us with our o-line woes right now.

What a shame

This guy has great potential. He has pretty good athletic ability, and is huge. Clifton will only be around probably 2 more years tops if he doesn’t retire this year and then we’re gonna be hurting at LT as well as RT. I think we need to concentrate on oline in next years draft.

!$#!%

That was NOT the news I was looking to hear! Is there someone on a different teams practice squad that we can sign away? I didn’t know they could just sign the guy off our practice squad. Damn. This is a big hit to our depth and we lose a potential replacement.

I was here checking your thoughts on Meredith...

Trevor, any team can a player off any other teams practice squad, but that player must be signed to the active roster. You can’t sign a practice squad player from another team to your practice squad. Also, the team that holds the players rights can’t block the move, but they can sign that player to their active roster preventing the other team from signing him if they choose.

I like Meredith and I am happy with the signing, I know he is not ready to contribute yet though…

He’s LOADED with potential. He could have been a first day pickup but screwed it up. Clearly he needs something to motivate him. Good luck with him, he is a high upside player that I was surprised to see make it through waivers in the first place!
